I trained my Jack 'Patu' to ring a tiny bell fixed close to the door. When ever we went out for a pee I rang that bell. Afrer a few days he rang it and we immediately went out. So he learned very quick to anounce 'I got to pee now'
I had a simmilar bell with us when we travelled. I placed it near the door in hotels. Always worked fine🙂
I also teached him very early the meaning of the keywords YES an NO.
With theese to words he learnd what's a clear YES, acceptable (jump on the couch or bed) and what's an absolut NO go (climb a fence or eat anything from the table).

@steveorner7919 hi? I put a treat in front of him and said NO. When he tried to take it I covered it with my hand and took it away. Yeah you must be really quick😂. When he learnd NO I said YES and allowed him to take it. And this procedure again and again. After some days I extended that by giving him a task to do before I said YES. For example sit and lay down muliple times before YES. Then later I gave mit tasks to go away from the treat before YES like: go to your place, sit and wait....then YES! Or bring the ball....and then YES when he brought it. Whenever he tried to take the treat inbetween I took it away with a loud NO.
Then I started to use YES and NO for everything.
A Jack learns it so quickly. 😊

Sorry for your loss, my Husband picked our Jack out of a litter when he was about 7 or 8 weeks old ( not from a breeder ) Our baby was potty trained after 2 weeks and we bought him toys all the time to chew on. He was told he could chew on his toys and he never destroyed anything in our home. My Husband passed away in January 2020 and my dog is 19 now , he still gets around good and sees good. I will say his separation anxiety is really bad. It is to the point that when I go to the store I hurry back home, as he will cry and bark until I return. It is awesome to be loved so much by one of these faithful Dogs. I pray your pain lessens soon .

Your generalizations are pretty good, My 4 year old JRT "Louie" only wants to hang with me. Wherever I am, he wants to be. No fenced yard and that is not a problem with Louie. But he does need his exercise... BIGTIME. Walking him does not get the job done. Twice a day he runs alongside my motor scooter for a mile and a half at 20 MPH. Three miles of serious running ever day and he loves it. Louie has never had a potty, chewing, barking, or biting problem. He's my best buddy.

Hi, we are new (parents) to our Jack Russell that goes by the name of Grace or Gracie as my wife calls her. She is still training us even though we have been lucky enough to have her for 8 months now, and practically everything you have mentioned applies. She was easy to pottie train however and only chews on her toys but she is a thief and loves to steal wife’s kitchen towels and tease her with them. We really enjoy your videos and I fully appreciate your hat as I am a fan as well. Keep up the good work, your terrier friends at lake of the Ozarks!

Bandit our JR loves to play ball ... he'll play fetch several times a day for 20-30 minutes a day or more depending on the day. Usually that is enough to wear him out by the end of the day.
He gets the zoomies but he is learning to play by himself ... he throws toys for himself. As long as I laugh or watch him, he'll carry on for quite a while. He figured out potty training fairly quickly but we still have the random accident usually when he having too much fun playing.

My friend called me 18 days ago and asked me that can I pet a dog which is jack russell? I accepted it otherwise his ex owner was going to give him to a shelter. I made my research and he is surprising me a lot such that we start walking regularly, then we became a sleepy dog but knows the time for his walk just in two weeks we had a great progress. He is 6 months old and he is crying to play with other olds and the children. The worst mistake that I made in this time was overestimating his power. I am living in İstanbul so we had places that you can had a picnic on grass and see the sea so I used his 3m flexi and place it between the chairs when we saw the cat the start to run and I noticed he was much far from us then I realized he was free and he try to catch a cat and jump on the rocks he was scared until he saw my scare then he start to calm me down. He is amazing but I need more energy!

I think all your tips are very good and true. However, my JRT is 4months old, and because the good weather, she wants to go in the garden more often now, but if I walk her, 20 mins and she wants to go back home.....very weird. I get she doesn’t like to go outside of her territory. Sometimes she sleeps for 1 or 2 hours after 1h of play and walk....sometimes I could knock her for 3hours of sleep after 30 mins of walk in the lunch time 😁 I need to pay attention now in the garden as she starts to look around to find a passage to escape.....I don’t want to trust too much to our fence, for now.
Thanks for this video, always very good stuff.

When I got Max as a puppy I had know idea! Potty training was easy, no problem. Energy level amazing still now at 9 years old he needs to be tired out. Intelligence incredible, he knows what we are going to do before we do it, as in leaving the house. Hearing , I pick up my sunglasses without making a noise. He is in another room and hears it, it’s amazing. He is my shadow always, either by my side or on my lap. Extended family comes they are his family. Jealous yes, protective yes! We have twin 3 year olds visit, don’t go near them with Max around! Amazing dog.. Though he has started to nip and bite, think he needs more exercise!

Awesome Jack you got. I Just started watching your video and agree with lot of what you say. But I just noticed you have a link for “Rawhide Dog Treat” that absolutely can kill a Jack and other breads. They do not chew it up enough and or eat to much it gets blocked in their intestines. I would recommend telling people ahead of the videos say you are not a vet or specialist. I only say this because a lot of people are careless with doing research on their own basically what I’m saying is common sense comes involved here I wouldn’t wanna see a dog hurt nor are you be responsible for somebody else’s mistake a lot of people watch these videos.

JRs do need to go pottys more often. They're a smaller dogs, especially the females so they have a much smaller bladder. What I've learned is that they love being out in the open even if they don't need to go potties. They're very smart too, my girl will have me thinking that she wants a pee at 2am when she just wants to go out and sit on a rock or chase possums. You'll learn how to tell the difference eventually.

I know Jack Russell's are natural, clever escape artists. What is the best way to secure your chain link fence from expert diggers, the Jack Russell Terriers? We have always had Airedale Terriers, who are also excellent diggers. The difference being they aren't typically digging to get out but just to dig a hole & usually not along the fence line. They also do not realize it or even attempt to jump over the fence, even though they could do so easily. I have seen a Jack Russell literally climb a tree high enough to jump over a fence alongside the tree. LOL!

Fine points. The more comfortable our Minnie gets, the more zoomie time gets crazy. The toys help, absolutely. We have to prep the yard, she doesn't seem to care about the chickens yet, but they're in a predator proof run with a skirt around it so nothing can dig under the fence. Potty training has been tough, she's still making mistakes inside, but it's all us not seeing the warning signs she's broadcasting. She literally sits at the door and talks to us, you can't get much more clear than that. Somehow we still miss it. Exercise wise, she's 4 months and can walk about 1/2 mile in the cold, but then needs to be in the coat to warm up the rest of the walk with her big dog brother. Big dog in a small body, absolutely. She bounces off her big dog brother's back, she bounces off the big cats' backs, and ducks, dives, dodges the retaliation. Thanks for the videos, keep up the good work.

Be prepared that if you are going to introduce a ball, or any throwing vessel to your JRT, that this will become an obsession that will stay with the dog for life. I think my dog would keel over from a heart attack before he stopped chasing balls/toys.
I have to be firm and put a stop to it, because he will never stop of his own accord. If I ever get another Jack, i will not be buying a ball!

Rather than let your Jack have the whole backyard as an area to use as a bathroom and worrying about where you step or their digging up you yard....Justt section off just outside the door with a small metal fence you can get at a pet shop. My dogs go out on my deck..can't get out...I pick up solids as needed and put into a lidded container lined with a bag to toss about every week or so.... and I occasionally throw 2 buckets of hot water with a bit of lysol to clean and then rinse away urine if they miss aim the urine going outside the gate...This is the most hygienic, easy, safe, way to let my dogs out whenever they want...I used to leash them onto the grass...What a hassle and a mess..tangled leashed, messy lawn in the winter, tiresome, 👎....The little fence is GREAT, CLEAN, EASY, SAFE, CONVENIENT so I thought I could make life easier for other people by telling them about it. I Especially like it at my window wall door...let out onto a clean solid surface of my deck that I keep hygienic.

It is such a privilege to be a human owned by A jack russell. My mistake was underestimating how smart and willing to please my dog is. I adopted him (well he adopted me) at 8 wks old I have no idea why he chose me but I'm glad he did. Yes he's very independent and needy at the same time and training was unique😄🐶If it didn't make sense to him he was not going to comply and that's it. We use only positive reinforcement with him and he loves to learn new things. Negativity or stern correction does not help these sensitive dogs at all.

Don't underestimate the size or strength of their jaws and teeth. They can open their mouth much wider than expected. Small sized toys are ok, but large ones are much more "fun" to mine. I have a LARGE squeaky Kong tennis type ball. She can not only get the thing in her mouth to carry it, but she can, and does, squeak it. Also, watch your tennis balls. They like to "peel" them. I have to trim mine to keep her from swallowing the fuzz. Get some puzzle toys, and rotate them. If they too easy to figure out, they get bored again, and a bored Jack is a destructive Jack.
THEY LOVE CUDDLE TIME!!!! My Jack is 4yrs old. Will be 5 in December. The last 10 months or so, she has become SUPER cuddly. If she doesn't get her cuddles, she gets sullen and starts "talking" to me. She sits about 3 feet away, and trills, purrs, woo-woos, and kinda growls under her breath at me.
Because I live in Upstate NY, it gets cold here. After her first sweater, she DEMANDS clothes. I think she has more than I do now.
Also, mine is VERY sensitive to hot weather and humidity. She shuts down, it was really scary at first. But she knows when to stop. Her feet SWEAT PROFUSELY when she is overheated OR nervous! You can tell when she is over-stressed by feeling her feet. If they are wet, when they should be dry, she is stressed.
Mine also LOVES baths!!!! Pay close attention to the anal glands and feet in the bath. Clean butt, clean feet, she is happy.
WATCH THE REAR KNEES!!!! My girl also has PATELLAR LUXATION. I give her a supplement called "Doggie Dailies Glucosamine for Dogs, 225 Soft Chews, Advanced Hip and Joint Supplement for Dogs with Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Hyaluronic Acid and CoQ10, Premium Dog Glucosamine" www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016MY21XG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I started it 2 weeks ago and saw a MASSIVE improvement in just a few days. Her knees were so bad, she didn't like to "sit", and she was holding her foot off the floor. Now she can do her "all 4 feet off the floor" jumps again!!!!
I double dosed her for the first week, 2 chews, and now she's on one a day.

I'm considering spring a special needs 1.5yr old JRT. She had her right rear leg amputated for medical reasons. Can you or anybody give me advice on his gear for her? Such as harness, lead, dietary needs & medical concerns I should watch for more than others etc.? If need be, I've got the capability to design and build her a custom "chair" should she need it. Thanks in advance!

I rescued an 18mth old JRT that had zero socialization as he was kept on a chain. He vomits at the sound of thunder bc he was left on the chain during a tornado storm. Super sweet also a velcro dog as another commenter stated. I would love a video on tips to house train him and how to stop him from from getting aggressive when he gets in trouble. Ive tried crating, i even installed a doggie door and he still pees in the house. Please help! For Milo's (jrt) sake and mom's sanity lol

A crate should always be a good thing...never use it as a thing to put them in when they are bad. Put him in ..close the door and leave the room...come back in 5 min...let him out...give a treat.
Repeat....if he cries keep him in there till he stops..when he stops crying go let him out. Be patient! Never hit your jack..u will lose all trust! Even a little smack.

My JR/ dachshund cross is now just hitting 8 months. I’m 65 and have spinal arthritis.
    Poor choice, huh?
I lost my 16 year old collie/ staffie cross during the London lockdowns. There were no rescue dogs to be had for love no’r money - everyone was buying a dog - at premium prices.
I simply couldn’t cope with the isolation, and then this little soul came along.
At home he’s the sweetest little guy, but walks in the park are desperate.
I ended up in tears today. ( Not me, I have a reputation for being something of a toughie ).
Despite plenty of practise, practise, practise he won’t come to recall off lead. On lead fine with a gentle leader collar ( which he hates), but pulls my arms out of their sockets immediately he sees someone to greet - whether they’re a dog or human. I’m desperate. Anyone, please tell me I CAN make this work. I’m on my own, and the thought of giving up this little full-of-life guy is just beyond words. How can I give him the exercise he wants/ needs without him just being out of control? We’re at a crossroads and I’m selfishly bonded so much already that the thought of rehoming is too much. Should I just be letting him go to someone who can give him more, or are we in with the chance of a better future. When I picked him up as a tiny puppy I looked across at him in the car and said said, ‘Hey, Buddy, it’s okay’, and the name stuck. He’s Buddy.
As a result of a number of sudden bereavements one after another ( none due to Covid ironically) I’ve recently been diagnosed as suffering from severe depressive disorder, anxiety, and PTSD.
Getting up in the morning to let him out for his first wee keeps me on track. Our walks are the main part of my day..
Will I ever have a dog who can walk with me through life, like my old dog did, ( she was lively, but so willing), or am I kidding myself and doing neither of us any favours? I’m in a hole and would appreciate any help/ advice anyone can offer. I seem to have almost completely lost my capacity to be resourceful. Thanks guys.

65 is not old!!!! Look on Madonna..
Play with your Jack at home as much as you can in a different ways. He needs to be tired! Otherwise he will be unhappy and destructive. Pulling outside is typical..you need to read and watch on yt about this issue. And I believe the more you give to him, invest in him the more you will get back from him. They are very intelligent but crazy and stubborn so there was moments during our 11 y together when I was thinking I can't anymore(my Jack was abused and trained for fights- aggression 100%)with him.. but also thanks to my Jacko my life has turned active, creative and I'm still learning patience and understanding. Don't give up. He came to you for a reason..❤🙂

@@joannejo8224 Many thanks for your reply. I have done a lot of reading, and YT of course, but I’d forgotten that with my last puppy I was younger.
I don’t think you can compare someone with spinal arthritis at 65 with
Madonna - known for working her body hard. That’s kind of absurd!
I used to be a swimmer and trampolinist, so was extremely fit, but…
Which is why things like playing with Buddy isn’t something I can take for granted. Recently, and after acquiring him, some scans have sadly revealed my upper spine has become more unstable, - the arthritis is now in my jaw, too, something I just didn’t see coming. and strange though it may sound that causes problems with him pulling - it’s very painful.
With many degenerative disabilities you age faster I’m afraid - sad but true.
      So doing my very best.
We seem to be doing better recently - using a Halti collar has been a tremendous step forward, and someone advised trying a waist lead, definitely worth a try, although the latter didn’t really help. A neighbour is also now exercising him, and of course he has plenty to keep him occupied at home, and with all sorts of things set up in the garden. I use a ball chucker, but the reality is my arms are now too stiff for real ball throwing.
My last dog was a staffie/ collie cross so also intelligent and needing plenty of stimulation - but he is a handful for sure, and the dachshund side of him is very stubborn. His recall in the park is almost non existent, despite practise in more confined spaces, such as the garden - and a local tennis court! I’ve met a few dachshund owners in the park since owning Buddy and they all say the same - it’s a case of being really on your game with the training. Funny - I thought the dachshund part would be a calming influence, which is why I went ahead, but my vet said it was quite the reverse, and to be prepared for a pretty rough ride through adolescence. Fingers crossed we come out the other side.🤞🤞

My JRT is 6 yrs old. She hates exercise. Is it because she is older? She just wants to stay inside and look out the sliding glass door, even if everyone is outside in the backyard. she wants to just watch from inside. It doesn’t matter what season it is. She has a doggy door and can go outside when ever she wants. She only goes outside to potty. Occasionally, she will run outside to bark at a squirrel but will come right back inside after she looses interest. The only exercise she gets is wrestling with my other dog. She is always ready for a wrestling match. We live in Houston and it is warm most of the year, could it be she is just heat sensitive?

I just got a JRT puppy a few weeks ago! He is 10 weeks old - I love him to pieces already but I live in an apt and he doesn't have all his vaccines yet, so I am finding it hard to give him the exercise he needs. It i resulting in a lot of nipping and barking. For the barking, I've just been avoiding giving him any attention when he does it. Should I be using a punishment as well? A verbal 'no' doesn't do anything. I'm wondering if I should pair it with a antibark collar...

    • @teaforthree1

No. When you shout NO that reinforces his behaviour. Dogs don’t understand the word

    • @nataliefoster8871
      @nataliefoster8871 3 года назад +4

rather than punishing him try distracting him with a toy or a treat, use mental stimulation games like hiding treats for him to find or throwing a toy for him to fetch to help him relieve his energy and frustration, remember he is just like a toddler at the moment his mental capacity is similar to that of a one year old child, when my pup nipped me I would yelp like a hurt puppy then say ouchie to my pup although when you say no or ouchie or whatever word you use you need to use the same tone that you would with a toddler to get the point accross it worked for me, whatever you do please don't yell at or smack him it won't teach him anything except to fear you, at the end of the day negative training(smacking, yelling shock/bark collars etc) is old fashioned style training and can harm the bond between you and your puppy, positive training is so much better, it teaches him to want to do your bidding and feel good about what he's doing, himself and his progress, your pup wants to learn but can't be expected to know what he should be doing from the get go, please don't take this as a dig or put down it isn't intended that way buddy, I really hope things improve for you and your fur baby
PS maybe try taking him out and carry him in your arms, the mental stimulation of all the new sights, smells and sounds might help

    • @uligoma
      @uligoma 3 года назад +2

You can exhaust and defrustrate your jrt not only with sports but also with things which train his brain. Training his patience is a major point in that. Let him sit and ask him to WAIT a few seconds. Put a treat in front of him on your hand but do not allow him to take it. Whenever he tries hide it with your hand or take it away. My keyword to end the waiting period is YES!
When he understans the WAIT and YES concept you can slowly step by step 1) extend the time 2)put the treat very close to him or even under him at the floor 3)ask him to do other jobs (go get that toy, lay down, sit...)before the releasing YES.
Doing a longer list of jobs in-between treats will also prevent that they end up on his hips😅
