I am a Black Belt in BJJ under Master Carlos Gracie jr. I started training at 42 years of age and got my Black Belt at 53. I have never competed for two reasons. First, I am a Surgeon so being mobile and prolonged standing is critical to my work. Also, I can't operate with injured shoulders or elbows. If I miss weeks of work recovering from a torn ACL that I got because I was knee reaped or caught in an inside heel hook by "that guy" who doesn't give you time to tap makes no sense for my lifestyle.
Second, I have heard comments like the following countless times during my training. " if you modify this technique this way it will break your opponent's neck, so ...only use it in tournaments!" "if you turn your body this way during a heel hook, the Ref can't see it and it will totally destroy the guy's knee, so...only use it in tournaments!" Crazy.

You must train so that it benefits your life! BJJ is your hobby and as such, enjoy your training. When it comes to tournaments, man, it is all on the line. So, sometimes you have to go all out and let the combat martial art showcase what it is about, combat! I prefer to take care of my training partners and protect myself. At 53, we must also pay special attention to our bodies and the way we recover. My advice, find good training partners you can trust to go hard with and this way you can still get good training and also protect yourself.... protect your profession as well!

you have to compete in life - most important competition is you compete against yourself, your business partner and your training partner. It is just different kind of competition. Some are more playful, and others are more serious
