It's as if the UK was "pushed out" of the union..
Look up the Stalin Note. Stalin wanted a reunified, neutral Germany like Austria. Why? It’s all a matter of Realpolitiks. A neutral buffer state between West and East would have been great for Stalin, as it meant that there was no direct border to the USA-controlled Europe (which by the way also kept Western Europe under its thumb), a bulwark against US military and economic expansion and not having to deal with creating socialism in a hostile environment. The USA refused, for they would have lost their interests in West Germany.
True...there is so much missing, like how a situation in which Reunification even became a topic evolved, the important role Genscher played in making it possible and how Germany basically paid off the Russians and France in order to get them and the US (which was kind of pleased about the notion anyway) outvote the UK.
Thatcher was wiser than the FA. She knew very well that once West & East Germany were reunited, the chances of England winning the World Cup again was eternally over! And sadly she turned up to be quite right.

That is correct. D-Mark for GDR from 01.07.1990 onward. You could say it was the start of the incorporation of the unification and ended on 0.00 am 03.10.1990 when the GDR ceased to exist.
MultiEpique That was on August 23, 1990 when a treaty of two Germanies as West and East Germany announced to reunite on October 3, 1990. Then nearly three weeks later on September 12, 1990, the four powers (🇺🇸 + 🇬🇧 + 🇫🇷 + 🇷🇺) signed up to renounce their claim into a treaty to make Germany to become a full sovereign state on March 15, 1991.
Speaking of, there was never such thing as a "Deutschmark", it was just a "Deutsche Mark" or simply "Mark". The former was coined by Anglos trying to show off their German.
Me too! Because it's much more complicated than that! It would be really interesting to speak about the different point of views at the time and especially in East and West Germany where everyone was not for a reunited Germany (like with the question of the Third Way).
I'm German and I didn't even know there were so many oppositions to the reunification even though German history class basically only consists of WW2 and the reunification nowadays.
@Heinrich Heinrich We got it tought, also the real political reasons behind some other stuff as well, like the Morgentau Plan or backgrounds of the Marshal Fund. So I am not sure what you talk about. German alliances to the West were and still are based on the geopolitical concept of "Westbindung". Just google it, there is no secrecy surrounding that topic.
@Heinrich Heinrich Just because most ppl do not propperly educate themselves (btw, self education is a cornerstone of our democracy, that is also why so much internal government stuff is openly publicised compared to other countries) does not mean it is a secret. I mean, even Wikipedia has an article about it.

I am amazed that Thatcher worried about German revanchism and actually asked the Soviets to attempt to prevent reunification militarily. I never knew that.
well, the thatcher government also comissioned a study on "the german mental condition/mindset" that claimed that "the german mental condition" is one of revangism, glorification of past greatness, militarism etc. kinda what everybody else thinks about the UK..... fun thing about that is, that this internal study got leaked and resulted in a political scandal and souring of german-british relations. And the UK pushed for legal limitations on german military size, stockpile sizes etc, wich now result in the german army being incapable of doing its constitutional job of being a NATO Defense Army. Somehow it seems that the UK was the problem in post war europe all along.

@UCHeZ60wbygvIyE3ZW3xT2GA funnily enough, that description applies to a couple of historical figures. I know you mean Hitler but sure bismark had a mustache and unified the majority of Germans, you could also make an argument for Otto I

@pondblank pondblank Ah yes, because history is black and white and there is no depth in a persons actions. Stalin did probably actually want a neutral Germany as it would serve as a buffer zone between the East and the West much like what the Allies [ including the USSR ] did with Austria. The flat Eastern European plains were a big problem for the USSR as this region was most vulnerable to foreign invasions as the Nazis had proven during their initial invasion of the USSR. You can have any opinion you want about people like Stalin but painting them off in such a simplistic way is stupid.
Andreotti was famous in Italy for his witty remarks, but of course most of them can only be understood in the context of Italian politics. For instance, there was a state owned society, Ferrovie ("rail system") which famously ran at a loss for most of its history. Andreotti once said: "there's only two kinds of crazy people, the ones who believe they are Napoleon and the ones who believe Ferrovie can run at a profit".

Basically everybody because they were worried about the power of that nation. An interesting detail would be that the question of wether Austria should be part of that Germany was already answered a couple years prior when german democrats tried to create a german kingdom and had a parliament to decide what they wanted and what not and ended up voting against having Austria in their new nation. They failed overall because the prussian king didn't want to be king of their nation but Bismarck later used their conclusion for his attempt at uniting Germany.
Argentina invaded British territory while Germany had been spilt in two as a way to reestablish a sort of balance of power. People still feared German nationalism and not without reason. Reunification was the right thing for Europe ultimately.. i think, The positives was it marked the end of the cold war and Germany could finally move on from what happened in the 1930's and 1940's (In some areas Germany to this day has trouble moving on from that troubled past) France being greedy as they historically have been wanted something out of it, and the Euro would of failed by now if not for Germany and UK. Germany―of course she needed to―has in fact done a better job than any of her European neighbours ("The Germans made us do it!") in living down their involvement in the crimes of fascism and Nazism. True, the other countries' participation was often coerced, but sometimes too it was enthusiastically willing. The most obvious example is Austria, which likes to imagine herself as Hitler's first national victim. While this is fair enough as far as it goes, that country actually had more Nazis per capita than Germany proper, and an inordinate number of the worst Nazis, like Hitler himself, hailed from there. Racist and xenophobic public expression happens everywhere, but what commendably always draws stern rebuke in today's Germany too often seems to pass largely unchallenged elsewhere on the continent.
Also, it is ridiculous and wrong to blame Prussia for Nazism. Here is why: - Nazism originated in Austria and Bavaria (two of the most anti-Prussian states in German-speaking Europe) in 1918 and 1919. - Although the Nazis had the most votes in Prussia, most Germans who were involved in Nazi war crimes came from Austria and southern Germany (in general the number of war criminals rises from North to South and from West to East).

Thatcher hated the idea of a unified Germany... Thatcher hated the French... Thatcher hated the EU... Thatcher hated socialism... Thatcher hated a lot of stuff... But she adored Ronald Reagan and the notion of re-establishing the British empire...in one form or another...
Nice clip, the Dutch prime minister was hesitant as well at the time. The Reunification didn’t happen on 1 July 1990 though, it was 3 October 1990. On 1 July the GDR adopted the Deutsche Mark as currency.
The Euro only made the German economy stronger than had it remained with the Deutschen Mark. The value of the Euro is driven by the collective economic strength of its member economies. Since Germany is the strongest of those, weaker economies drive down the value of the euro against what would have been a continued Mark. The perceived shackling of the German economy to this new currency had the opposite effect of that, which had been hoped: The Euro made the German economy stronger and the Italian one weaker.
In context, Thatcher wanted to avoid a possible revolt in East Germany that could lead to a nationalist movement taking over the greater Germany... Again. She was wrong, but it's not like her fears were completely unwarranted.
Emmmmmmmm sweet delicious context, thank you! Still a bit paranoid, considering that both superpowers alone had a combined presence of over half a million troops on German soil + 200'000 French and British.
Mostly baseless english stereotypes in my opinion. Some british still seem to live in the 40s to 60s, maybe they broadcast to many bad historical movies. I have read somewhere that the british schools taught with books from the 1930s until the late 1970s including all great british empire stuff. And in Eton at least a decade longer.
Marxism is an economic concept whereas democracy is a political concept. Therefore, a communist state can be democratic just as easily as a capitalist one can, just as there's nothing to prevent a capitalist state from going authoritarian. Look at the authoritarianism creeping in from both the left (antifa, etc.) and right (trump, cruz, etc.) in the USA to see where things are ultimately headed. Those Marxist-Leninist states nominally are/were democratic - in structure at least. Sure, legally only one party was allowed and a host of other means of oppression, when all those legalities are boiled away they technically are democracies.
Interesting perspective. Watching these events as an American, we were 100% behind reunification. I wasn't aware of any dissenting voices. To think that Thatcher asked the Soviets to deploy MORE troops to East Germany? It sounds insane.

One thing, Germany is the beating heart of Europe, Geographically it is in the middle of Europe, It has the largest population of the free democracies in Europe, It has the most borders in Europe, which means it has a massive Political/Financhel influence. This is before any politician even thinks of pushing the German nation to greatness. If you look at German history (and not just the Hitler era) you see what a dominant country it has been only kept weak by the country's around it because they fear a strong Germany.
Here is why:
- Nazism originated in Austria and Bavaria (two of the most anti-Prussian states in German-speaking Europe) in 1918 and 1919.
- Although the Nazis had the most votes in Prussia, most Germans who were involved in Nazi war crimes came from Austria and southern Germany (in general the number of war criminals rises from North to South and from West to East).

Plus the german Grundgesetz (aka constitution) says that germany should get a new constitution after reunifaction, written by a elected comite. That never happend the east simple joined the west.
The east simpley joined the west.... yeah well thats true ... they should have never been apart in the first place so just reuniting them is what you do . My only issue is they should have got all of Germany back which includes the parts Poland stole and Königsberg .

Gorbachev wrote in his book that there was no promise that NATO wouldn’t expand
This is such a great comment section, with absolutely no politics whatsoever.
In context, Thatcher wanted to avoid a possible revolt in East Germany that could lead to a nationalist movement taking over the greater Germany... Again.
She was wrong, but it's not like her fears were completely unwarranted.
Even though she was a nationalist herself
Most of afd's support comes from the former gdr. So she was partially right.
@@KillerofWestoids Because they are still 2nd Grade Citizens. Income is low, Taxes high and Jobs are rare.
I like how ex Marxist-Leninist states used to put “Democratic” in the name of the country, although it wasn’t democratic
Democratic Peoples Public of Korea is the most democratic country in the world
Democratic peoples republic of Congo is a bastion of knowledge and humanitarian peoples.
I like how USA used to put “Liberty” in the ideology of the country, although it wasn’t free from its start
@@user-mr1yb9qk4y Your wrong!

The animation of Yeltsin poking his head out over the top of the other leaders was hilarious.
Interesting perspective. Watching these events as an American, we were 100% behind reunification. I wasn't aware of any dissenting voices. To think that Thatcher asked the Soviets to deploy MORE troops to East Germany? It sounds insane.
Not really germany literally tried to take control of europe twice in the space of 50 years and dropped bombs on british cities and towns. So it's not really that surprising that she wouldn't want Germany to be one of the most powerful countries in Europe once again
I knew a WWII vet who was opposed to German reunification. He said "those goose steppers will be wanting to march all over Europe again."
How did he react after German reunification had happened?
If he only knew Europe would be begging them to pull their weight when it comes to defense. Seems to be happening now though.
@@crownprincesebastianjohano7069 yeah funny kinda.
@@crownprincesebastianjohano7069 and funny that especcially the UK threw a wrench into that by forcing germany to take harsh maximum size limitations for the armed forces wich would cripple german military capabilities in NATO Defense.
And also together with the US push for the CFE Treaty wich crippled european militaries for decades.
So many people in these comments are salty about germanys success in almost everything and germanys economic power.
Jealousy is more like it.
And then trying to blame the usa for their problems which they created brits and french are just branches of the same tree they always been jealous of Germany and USA

stalin did once propose a united germany that would be entirely neutral from the USSR and USA, but that was shot down by the west
after that, all soviet leaders opposed german unification
One thing, Germany is the beating heart of Europe, Geographically it is in the middle of Europe, It has the largest population of the free democracies in Europe, It has the most borders in Europe, which means it has a massive Political/Financhel influence. This is before any politician even thinks of pushing the German nation to greatness. If you look at German history (and not just the Hitler era) you see what a dominant country it has been only kept weak by the country's around it because they fear a strong Germany. America prefers a strong Germany because they see them as a buffer against Russia and of all the Peoples of Europe they prefer/trust them the most. these are the facts, the reality of Europe is if you are east or west Germany on your side is a massive boost.
“James bizzonet” a legend
While I appreciate that these 3 minute videos let you cover a whole host of historical topics, it feels as if these videos are somewhat superficial. Personally I'd prefer fewer videos overall but each being longer.
West Germany: Let's unite, my brother
East Germany: *mmhmhh* (mouth is duck taped)
Russia: Take him. I ask for nothing.
UK/France: Nooooooooooooo
Quite interesting and very well observed that the ACTUAL date of reunification was July 1st 1990, when the D-Mark was introduced to the GDR, as opposed to the OFFICIAL date of October 3rd 1990, when the GDR ceased to exist.
