    Move that eyebolt half way up the ladder and it will go up and down twice as fast and you won't have to bend over to unhook it!😉

      That higher position would put less sideways stress (actually up the ladder when raised) on the eyebolt when the ladder was up.

    My husband and I put a winch in our barn loft. We use it to put our Christmas totes and other items up and down so we don’t have to risk injury carrying things.
    It has a swing arm so after whatever is lifted up you can swing it into the loft floor.

    I would like to see you put some rubber mats in front of your work benches. They have several types. I know it may not seem like it now but over time walking and standing on cement is very hard on your joints. It will help your back, hips, knees and feet plus be warmer in the winter. My parents owned businesses over the years and if you think about it standing on your feet in beauty salons, barber shops, the kitchens of restaurants behind counters and such, all have rubber mats of some kind. Be kind to yourselves! I so enjoy your videos, thank you both so much for taking the time to include us in your busy lives. I also enjoy the cooking and your prayer time with supper. Blessings to your family. Homestead is coming together and always looks so well kept.

    Since the ladder is now permanently attached, put a hand rail on the left side. It will make it safer and allow you to carry things up with 1 hand and still hold on with the other.
    Moce the eye bolt further up the ladder so it is directly under the pulley in the raised position. This will reduce stress on the ladder, the pulley, and the loft, plus speed up the lifting and lowering of the ladder.
    Also, move the eyebolt to the outside left of the ladder to move it out of the way. Then you will not have to move it to use the ladder.
    Add some cross bracing to the back of the ladder to stiffen and stabilize it.
    Add wood to the inside of the rails of the ladder between each rung. This will help lock the rungs in place and stiffen up the ladder.
    Change the eye hooks to eye bolts and add pulleys at every point the wire line makes contact. This will reduce friction and keep from fraying the wire.
    Mark a dropzone on the floor to indicate where the ladder will come down. This will give you an area to keep ckear when lowering the ladder, and allow you to see if and how much the ladder is shifting. Be able to address it before it fails.
    It is a 2,000 lbs winch, it can easily handle the extra wood needed to make the ladder a safer permanent structure.

    If you move the cable connection up to the 2nd or 3rd step from the top of the ladder, the cable travel, and thus the number of times you have to turn the crank, will be ~15% of what it is now. That does increase the tension on the cable but the mechanical advantage provided by the winch and crank will easily accommodate that; you will be able to lift or lower the ladder without the drill, as the hand crank will be fast and easy.

      Ty, you saved me a lot of typing. I was thinking going right to the fourth wrung. This idea even puts less stress at the pulley above allowing it to pull straight instead of at an angle,

    • @karlgriggs8887
      @karlgriggs8887 4 года назад +3

      Adding two more pulleys in place of the hooks will also if you get this pun... cut down or through drag on those hooks. Also if they mistake how tight the cable gets as the ladder is raised that eyelet is going to split that bottom rung just like his new wood splitting tool.

    • @ajfvajf5
      @ajfvajf5 4 года назад +9

      Also put the eye hook on the side opposite the winch from behind passing to the other side with a hook bolt (similar to those on the rafters) then up. That way cable is not in way while climbing up/down

    • @rsp6549
      @rsp6549 4 года назад +17

      @@t-bear1863 Agreed, but whatever rung he uses, the lifting pulley should be positioned exactly above wherever that rung is when the ladder is fully lifted; this represents the least possible resting tension. Even as it is now--offset far in front of the bottom rung--the lateral forces are pushing the ladder into the loft with huge forces. I would do the math but hey, I only come here for the goats.

    I've used solar lights inside the lean-to on my chicken coop for several years. The lights add an hour or two in mid-winter, depending on how much sun there is during the day. This might encourage them to eat a bit more and lay a bit more, but probably not too much. The dim light gives me a chance to check on them during the early evening on these short winter days.

    Al, I like your ladder solution. Can I suggest a small change to the ladder connection? If you get a piece of gas, black iron, pipe that is 1 foot longer than the width of the ladder, you can add some support to stiffen the lower section of the ladder and also move the cable out of the way. Make two holes in the pipe, one each where the sides of the ladder would meet the pipe when you hold the pipe at 90° to the ladder rails. Make each hole lage enough to pass a screw through the two holes. Hold the ladder up at shoulder height and mark a line half way between the two steps that would allow the cable to be the most vertical to the ceiling pulley. Now attach the pipe across the back side of the ladder rails so that the right side rail is flush with the end of the pipe. The left side pipe should extend out at least 1 foot past the rail. Now, drill a third hole all the way through the gas pipe close to the left end of the pipe. Put a bolt through the pipe so that you can attach the pipe to the cable instead of the center of the ladder step. Now, the cable is out of the way of the ladder steps and you have changed the pivot point for the cable. The ladder will still go up and down and the cable is moved closer to the center of the ladder length while the pipe is making the ladder stiffer and keeping it from twisting over time. You shouldn't need to remove the cable before using the ladder with this change in mounting locations. I look forward to and enjoy your video each morning. I am enjoying learning how to homestead in today's lifestyle. Please keep them coming and continue to include your wife and daughter in the projects and daily farm tasks.

    Like the idea of the drill. I built pretty much the same for my father-in-law decades ago. Use an old tractor steering wheel LOL. Worked great. Doesn't look like there would be enough room to stand and walk around in the loft, so I don't see much need for rails. They would really get in the way of loading material into and out of the loft. May be more risk of accident than that of falling.

    I agree with other posts. Mount the ‘o’ ring on the left side of the ladder about halfway up. 1- you won’t have to unhook it to use the ladder and 2- it will raise and lower much quicker from that mounted position. And C- replace the screw hooks with pulleys to grease the operation...

    A couple of quick observations on the ladder raising system, the last pulley in the system that is above where the cable hook connects to the eyelet needs to be directly above the ladder in its fully raised position otherwise you have way to much tension pulling against the rung into the loft, also you need pulleys at each direction change, less drag and wear and tear on the cable, also move the eyelet to the back side of the rung to eliminate a trip, slip hazard, otherwise nice idea...

Plus, if you move the winch and pulleys out to the end of the steps when they are in an up position. It will go up easier and not drain the batterys as fast. I have learned the hard way of these little lessons. Haha. Nice job in every way besides that.

    I used the same method to store the hay elevator in my barn. It has worked for many years.

    Hi Al and Gina and Liv, if you make a balustrade along the top of the upper level in the workshop, it will create the handles that Gina needs to feel safer, plus it will contain anything that you put up there, just a thought 💭. 🇬🇧👁

    Al/Gina, you will need to put pulleys on those eye hooks or the cable will cut thru them before too long. The one above winch will be the first. You might want to consider changing location of the pulleys to change the angles to put less loading on attachment points. Increasing strength and relocating attachment points with use of thru bolted pad eyes instead of hooks could give you ability to lift heavier items . You could change to allow lifting of heavy items into the loft by lifting ladder at mid pint or even higher. Power of winch will have no problem with the ladder. Placing winch on gable end wall above work bench and having winch cable run up thru hole in loft floor, across loft ceiling and the down to ladder or item. Mount it off center to lift ladder from side and allow lifting items to loft with ladder still in place. It will also make system less visible in the open area of shop. Just another way to skin a cat,,,,,,,sorry Figaro, you don’t have to HIDE ,,, oh I did it again.

    If you put the double nuts on the drive shaft, use locktite or JB Weld on the threads to ensure it doesn't come loose during operation.

    Good idea on getting the steps out of the way. Consider moving the hook on the steps up 2-3 steps so that it is not pulling sideways as much when it is up (cable in up position will be more vertical), and won't have to wind in quite as much cable to get it up to the top.
