I can't believe it's already been 4 years. your nursery is looking really nice. I like the whisky barrels and all the spacing is pleasant. you're doing a great job amd I hope you get insanely rich from it
I saw Bjorn at the Coheed and Cambria show a couple weeks ago. It took every fiber of my being to not run up and say "this is a bonsai star, gather round!" I'm excited for the open house this October.
@@EiseienBonsai my wife told me I should but I didn't want to be weird. I figured having dinner at the KBS show was enough but we'll talk coheed and alkaline if you have time at the open house.
Thanks for the low-key hint on where to get good copper wire. I have his email bookmarked now and it's far less expensive than what I've found so far on the internet. You know you're the best in the biz when you don't even need a fully functional website for people to order from and instead say "email me" to order wire.
I'm in the very beginning stages of my dream of opening the first dedicated bonsai nursery here in oklahoma. As a single father with sole custody it presents challenges, but I knew from the moment I got my first tree that this was what I was going to do with the rest of my life. Working on getting an etsy store set up, and on a way to get capital to provide soil, tools, wire, fertilizer, deadwood supplies etc. I was to specialize in taking raw/young material and growing them to be bonsai, similar to what telpurian does but also providing all the other things mentioned as well as trees in later stages Still have tons to learn, and I rely solely on youtube, mirai live and bonsai u so these videos are invaluable to me, thanks
Its better to sell raw material for people who want to make bonsai. Soil, tools, pots, fertilizer etc are all bigger profits than trying to sell finished bonsai
I would love to see an updated version of this topic now that you are back in Japan, Id imagine it has to be vastly different / harder to be successful there.
Bjorn - thank you for sharing. Your insight and back story to starting a Bonsai nursery is invaluable. These keys to success go hand in hand with balancing your time along with being a well rounded Bonsai Artist. Knowing one's audience and finding a specialty is essential. Great stuff, Domo!
I love the transparency of this video. It’s hard as it self to own owning bonsai trees, better yet having to worry about the sales and putting time in other tasks. I truly admire your work and I’m thankful for your information.
Your work is amazing. One aspect is the cost factor. I don't want to start a nursery but just acquiring the supplies for just a couple of plants starts to be an investment. The plants, wires, tools, growing mediums, pots, etc. All have to be sourced and most things need to be shipped. It's kind of daunting so I understand all the work that you do on such a high level. A really high level!
Your passion can be seen in everything you do and that might be the most important aspect of your success. I really like to watch your videos and always learn a lot with you. Greetings from Portugal!
I live in Bloomington Indiana. I live close by Mark Fields. The micro climate here is similar To Nashville Tennessee. Starting a bonsai nursery has always been a dream of mine.
Bjorn, is this a hint at a franchise opportunity? 😅 So glad you're doing so well from the time i first started to watch your journey 12 yrs ago. But you forgot the most important part....your better half that helped along the way. Also your supportive family when you started at the club in Tn. Glad to see you at festival this year, thanks, to bad we had to cut it short. Steve.
i don't want to make a nursery but just a nice serenity garden for people to meditate in. thank you for making this video so i can start.... also LOL at brown thumb... where has that thumb been?
As an Ops Manager for a small business, I can attest that there are two key facets to owning a business: 1. Doing the work of the business. 2. Running the business (e.g. the accounting, invoicing, paying bills, managing staff) Most owners love doing the work of the business (because that's what they were passionate about), but they fail at actually running the business. My recommendation to any small business owner is to have a "right hand man" (or woman) who excels at "running the business", so that you can focus on what you love. Otherwise running the business will suck the passion out of doing the business.
I always wanted to have my own regional native yamadori nursery, my major set back is that I have no business skills. To me it not about money, I just would like someone like my trees enough to have in there collection. Right now I lost a family member and while I was away I lost my entire collection. So having to start back from the ground up is a whole lot of work. That's exactly were I'm doing work the land get it ready to grow and share to fellow local citizens.
A very basic question: When you do decide to open a nursery after getting the right training, you will need a base set of trees for display. You cant decide to start a nursery and then hunt for material and then start training them. You will still need some finished trees to start with. Where do you get that material? are these trees imported from china/japan?
This is awesome info. I'm planning on opening a very small bonsia garden in my back yard. It wil be an appointment only kinda thing. More of a hobby I'll share with others then a full blown business. I plan on selling trees, my hand made pots and offer care and styling. I'm also looking into starting a local club. There is little to no bonsai community in my area, but lots of people interested.
Need an update. You didn't really mention much on the business aspect. How and when. When to start? How many plants? How do you keep up with the stock?
Can you talk about Yamadori in more detail? How its done and how you do it. I live in Germany and I would like to go into the mountains to collect some trees, but I know that there is more to it than just getting a permission and hiking.
I don't think people realise just how many hours and how much sacrifice goes into owning a Bonsai Business. i often tell people i do less bonsai owning a bonsai business. BUT if you can make it work the rewards will come, but its a looong road.
Thank you for this Great video This is what im searching for to know more about bonsai practices revenues to make the first step and jump in a new adventure in the BONSAI art world Im flowing you and many other bonsai masters years ago I love your great beautiful work and your videos helped me too much You give too much to what you love, (bonsai art) you follow what you love and this is was a great mistake you didn't concentrated in the businesses matter and your revenue If you gave 1/3 of your time to the business matter (selling bonsai material, soil, fertiliser, wire, pots....) Eiseien will be a great company. An Artist must live and he needs money for that Sorry for my critical comment but its made with love 🙏 All my best wishes success and happiness 🙏
Hi ! We meet years ago in a workshop in Cronwell Ct! I was the Spanish lady who asked you many questions when you were working styling a tree and after we have a picture together! Well now I’m here in Osaka and can you let me know where is the place of your bonsai apprenticeship? I’m going to stay 3 days and I hope you answer me sooner! Thank you ! Basically he sell extra stuff like pots and stuff while growing trees which he then look after and later sell as lump sum kinda of things maybe also marketing like social media sell on Etsy, eBay or get money from ads on RUclips as part of one business strategy ... that's what most bonsai nurseries do these days 😉😎
a question I've been having for a while now: what about bonsais' thefts? Are all nurseries insured against this (can you insure your trees?) and usually how much does this factor impact in running this type of business (as, for example, having cctv in place, alarms, insurance as said, guardian dogs and whatnot). Thanks!
I installed 24 cameras in my place and doing as Appointment only via Facebook, phone, etc. Would help to at least have a track records for visitors. Walk in, just no no for me at all.
That’s what I have been doing this year. My biggest problem I have In countered is so many people have bought the cheap so called Bonsai from the big box stores that almost die immediately. So even though many people are interested in Bonsai they have been burned from their experience in the art and are unwilling to try again with actual Bonsai.

Another thing to be added...climate challenge s like temperature + heavy rain fall, protection ideas from them.
I don't want to start a nursery (yet) but I would like to know how domestic nurseries have a high rate of successful cuttings and propagation
