I didn't even know the Viola existed as an instrument until I went to learn violin. My teacher got me to hold a violin and said it looked silly because I'm tall and have long arms. She suggested I try viola and while I'm still very much a beginner, I just like the sound of the viola more.
I agree, I don't play either violin or viola (I do play a few other instruments), but in my opinion viola sounds a bit better generally. Warmer, fuller, deeper. Not as bright. However, I've also noticed violins produce more variety in sound - on just on the same instrument - than the more consistent warmness of the viola. Perhaps that is why the violin is more used? It's versatility? anyway, both cool instruments.

The viola is underrated. It has a remarkable pitch and it stands out the most for string instruments. It’s pitch is higher than the cello, by one octave exactly, so it doesn’t create a mournful sound. Violins are fine, but sometimes the notes can get too high. And it creates a squeaky effect. I love the viola, even though I play the cello. I which I can switch to viola. ❤
