    This is one of the most difficult shot, not only it requires lots of setup, but the timing in positioning and hitting the ball are both very critical.

    This is good shot to start attack. But I have a doubts - should this flick be used to attack heavy underspin serves? Thank you for video!

    • @elijahng5673
      @elijahng5673 5 лет назад +1

      It really depends. If you flick is very powerful then sure you can. This is very situational and depends on your playing style. If you see a heavy underspin serve coming to you and do not feel safe flicking then push it long backhand. Most people are unable to loop the ball with their backhand consistently.

    Hi, how do you return mid long heavy underspin serve? Thanks

  • @chrislanue
    @chrislanue 5 лет назад

    Hi, from the videos it seems that FZ holds his elbow unusually high and the wrist is so forward it looks like is between the ball and the net.

    • @elijahng5673
      @elijahng5673 5 лет назад +1

      chrislanue the higher elbow allows him to impart more sidespin on the ball. If your elbow is not that high there will be more topspin and forward

    "What is the MINIMUM BALL PEAK HEIGHT off the bounce where a ball can still be successfully and consistently BANANA FLICKED?" Or, put another way, "What is the MINIMUM BALL PEAK HEIGHT off the bounce below which the ball is TOO LOW to be successfully and consistently BANANA FLICKED and therefore can only be PUSHED?" I myself can consistently banana flick a ball with a bounce on my side of the table that rises to a 9" peak, but I cannot seem to consistently banana flick a ball with a peak that is only 7” or much lower. So at this point, I am not practicing flicking balls that are lower than an imaginary 7" MINIMUM BALL PEAK THRESHOLD, and instead, if the ball is 6" or lower, I'll just PUSH the ball. I’ll easily PUSH all balls with peaks of between 2” and 6”, but between a 6" ball peak and an 8” ball peak, I don't know what to do. These balls seem TOO LOW TO consistently BANANA FLICK (at least for me) but at the same time, they appear to be TOO HIGH TO RISK a PUSH (without prompting the opponent himself to attack my ball by his own FLICK or by his own LOOP). On the videos I’ve seen, even Fan Zhen Dong is generally NOT banana flicking any balls that are lower than a 6” peak. So, that being said, "What is the MINIMUM PEAK HEIGHT where a ball can still be successfully and consistently banana FLICKED? " OR, "What is the MINIMUM PEAK HEIGHT below which the ball is TOO LOW to be successfully and consistently banana FLICKED and therefore should only be PUSHED?"

    I did this stroke a couple of years ago and my wrist began to hurt. I am 75 and its just not worth getting arthritis from a game. Fan Zhendong may not even have a wrist in the future.

    Sometimes when the ball is short I end up brushing the ball straight up with no power. It lands on the net. Is there a way to correct this? Thanks in advance. Your videos are amazing.

    • @Wole58
      @Wole58 5 лет назад +1

      When the ball is very short, you can either push or flick at the peak of the ball bounce. If the ball is short and has lot of underspin, the push is likely to be the option. However if you spot a no/low effect short serve, you can be more aggressive.

    • @elijahng5673
      @elijahng5673 5 лет назад +1

      Use your legs and transfer your weight properly. This is important when it comes to lifting underspin

    • @yudistiraliem135
      @yudistiraliem135 2 года назад

      If the ball is short then FZD would use banana flick, it brush the ball on the side so the effect of underspin is negligible actually. The different is just that underspin ball would be flatter and slower so it does not give enough kick for you to return. That just means you have to use more of your own power. This can be achieved with faster rubber and bats or usually for most it’s because of bad transfer of weight to the ball. Imagine one inch punch, you need to be efficient with the small movement you can make. Tense your whole body just before contact with the ball if you hadn’t do so, but relaxed all the way before especially the wrist.
