    These are very beautiful fish. When my brother gave up fish keeping I looked after my his Salvini as well as a few other cichlids for a couple weeks in a spare tank until he could find someone to rehome them.

    I used to have an unusually large 6-7" gorgeous female who had no problems holding her own with 12-16" Jaguars and Dovi's.. It was quite a sight to see. Damn I miss that tank

    Great looking fish. i have one that looks exactly like yours. it is a female as well...about 5 inches. she spawned with my red devil and now i have about 40 fry in the tank. they are only about 2 weeks old now. cant wait to see how they look as adults.

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад

      Wow I was just wondering if a red devil could fertilize salvini eggs! My dominate female's tube just dropped, and she's about to lay eggs in the red devils territory, so if he decides to fertilize them I'll have my batch too!

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 лет назад

      Yes these littles guys have a lot of fight in them. As long as the rainbow shark isn't small enough to be eaten it should be okay, they may chase it a little with territorial behavior but it shouldn't be too much to stress out the rainbow shark

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 лет назад

      In terms of space, yes...but unless you have a mated pair they will fight all the time and eventually the most dominate will force the other two hide all the time

    In your opinion, would a dolphin cichlid harm small tanganyikan cichlids such as the brichardi?

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад +1

      Based on my experience with dolphin cichlids, I'd say no. Dolphin's are some of the mildest haps I've kept; and I think adult brichardi are too big to be eaten ( I never kept any). The 2 should co exist with little if any conflict....in my opinion

  • @audrisampson

    I have two 1 inchers in a 55. They live with 5 Rainbow Cichlids, 1 Roberstoni, 1 convict, 1 yoyo loach and a red tail black shark. Am I in for some major trouble in 6 months?

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  6 лет назад +1

      Yes you may certainly be...firstly they will battle each other; and the more dominate will force the other to stay hiding...then the other cichlids will be terrorized. It may not be to death...but everyone will fear the dominate salvini. Your rainbows and red tail may be fast enough to avoid conflict

    • @rugididwagner8328
      @rugididwagner8328 5 лет назад

      It really depends on your tank set up. If the tank has lots of hiding spots it may provoke aggression but the tank overstocking may limit aggression. What is your filtration?

    +DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS
    I just bought 2 Salvini & Convicts, (not sure if they are a pair) I am pretty sure the bigger one is male because of the dark blotch on dorsal fin and Gill plate as well as the beautiful red belly. Other one is very less colored with lightly red colored belly with no dark mark in gill plate, its smaller than the female. I am not sure if its a male. But the bigger female fish chases the small one. Female chasing male is it normal?
    As well as the convicts does the same, I don't know they are pairs ...
    very importantly both Salvinis and Convicts always hides out, its been 3 days since I own them. Any advise are appreciated.
    Thanks

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад

      Well firstly that blotch on the dorsal isn't a sure way to determine the gender...my 3 females each have them; also females with show a brighter red on their belly. The best way to visibly distinguish a male is by the amount of blue it shows...males with a lot more blue speckles over the yellow body color....here's a good picture showing them...the male being on the left

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад

      Salvini cichlids are highly aggressive towards their own kind, so whether you have 2 females or a male and a female....they will still fight and the dominate one will force the other to hide. If you have a male and a female, eventually if the female lay eggs they can pair and aggression towards each other can lower. As for convicts, they are a lot more easier to sex because only females have red on their belly. How big is your tank...with these fish the best way to bring them out of hiding is to add more fish...whether you had more cichlids or large dither fish....just these fish are very shy and need other fish to feel comfortable enough to swim openly...which is ironic considering how aggressive they are!

    • @kumarashokgak
      @kumarashokgak 7 лет назад +1

      DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS my tank is a 3 ft x 1.75 ft x 1.25ft .. a 40G. So far I have only 2 Salvini and 2 Convicts. What are the other fish you suggest

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад

      Dither fish like a small group of spotted silver dollars,Buenos aires tetra, tiger barbs...any schooling fish that are not too small to be eaten. With this size tank size it may not be best to add other cichlids...the dither fish should allow to tension between the cichlids to calm down a bit, with more activity coming out

    I got a 40 breeder that I'm about to set up. I would like a Salvini and a pair of convicts. Could this setup work in a 40 breeder? Could silver dollars be used as dithers or do they get to large for dithers in a 40 breeder?

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад +1

      A 40 isn't bad for those fish, but the convicts paired could definitely make life hard for the salvini, even if you add 4-5 siver dollars, the salvini is the biggest threat to the convicts so it would be targeted

    • @ShillDozer
      @ShillDozer 7 лет назад

      DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS Thanks for the reply. I have one more question for you if you don't mind. What fish if any would have the best chance of working with a pair of convicts in a 40 breeder. What fish would be tough enough but also be not too big for a 40 breeder?

    could i keep a salvini cichlid in a 55 with a green terror (andinacara stalsbergi)?

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад

      As far as size yes, but you may get a few fights from the two, both are aggressive and will won't to be boss. To decrease intensity of fights you can add other fish to distract them from one another like schooling fish large enough not to be eaten (silver dollars, black skirt tetra, tiger barbs, etc.)

    • @jakeraines8919
      @jakeraines8919 4 года назад

      I tried to put my green terror and salvini together with tiger barbs when I got them in a 55g. It worked for about 2 weeks "besides a couple barbs eaten" and my green terror decided it was going to be his tank. So i had to put salvini in his own tank. Then a couple weeks after that green terror decided he didn't want the tiger barbs in there anymore so terrorized them extremely bad...only able to catch and eat the albinos they must if been slower...so I ppl ut barbs int ok salvini tank at which time within 2 nights he managed to take out 8 of them are 3 killed rest

    Can salvini breed with flowerhorn because both the colour patterns and the the structure of female flowerhorn and salvini are same t

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад

      Most cichlids that originate from central America can cross breed, so if you have a male salvini dominate enough it can potentially breed with a female flowerhorn (most male flowehorn are infertile)

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад

      I can imagine that the dominate one is colored up and it keeps the rest either hiding or discolored. Males have more blue speckles across their body then females, also how big are yours...at about 5 inches females will be ready to breed and you should be able to see a egg tube under her:

      DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS they are about 3 to 4 inches and i have a flowerhorn male tell me the breeding tips

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  7 лет назад

      Most flowerhorn males are infertile so that's why its harder to breed them, but in general heavy water changes weekly help get the females in the mood, the most dominate female will become more aggressive and territorial claiming a section of the tank, then laying eggs when she feels that her area is secure...and if the male is interested, he'll fertilizer them

    Got 2 salvini (juvenile) and they are with turbo barbs and rainbow fish, hopefully I won’t have to remove them in future

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  4 года назад +1

      They are mainly aggressive towards cichlids, so they'll destroy each other (unless they are a male and female and pair up (then they would destroy everyone else)) but if they are not defending fry, the shouldn't harm the barbs and rainbows
