Dude is now a Grammy award winning musician and sporting a Cryptopsy shirt. This guy literally sparked the bluegrass ear back up in me. Earl Scruggs, Clinch Mountain Boys/Ralph Stanley, Roy Clark and on and on. Mad props and much respect.
I'm 53 and just discovered this guy today...wow. His playing is amazing. His story? The fact that he has come out of it a half way decent thinking human is amazing. I'm sure there is a lot of healing that will have to be done in his heart over the years but man...this kid is actually amazing in a lot of ways...impressive human! =) This story really got to me along with a short bio a fan made...I look forward to seeing where he goes with music later in his life if I make it that long hehe...

Over 20 years ago, my dad thought he had cancer. He gave me and my brother a right each that he had worn for years. I wore it every day. I was working at a bowling alley at the time and lost it. It literally hurt my soul to lose that ring. 2 weeks later, I was fixing the rug at the door where people came in. 100s if not 1000s had walked on that rug. I was fixing it because it was crooked. And there lay that ring under the rug. Amazing feeling. I still have that ring. 30 plus years later. Good story, Billy.
❤️❤️❤️ Wow, just yesterday RUclips recommended a video of some random kid on a couch playing a song called “dust in a baggie,” (which I am currently obsessed with). Now hearing this story, so beautiful.
Me also. Just today a video appeared in my suggestions of someone unknown to me, named “Billy Strings”, playing a guitar, sitting on a couch. Wow! Now I’m watching every Billy Strings video I can find.
@@timanderson5342 Yes, they're an influential death metal band from the 90's. They're still around and kicking, but what they released in the 90's is considered essential listening. Particularly the album "None so vile", which, coincidentally, the shirt that he's wearing, is of the album art. It's a biblical reference to John the baptist who's head was served on a plate by his mother, Herodias.
I recently recovered my dad's custom les paul. Been gone 11 years, dad's been gone 10. No better feeling than finding it,with my birth certificate in the case still. And the guy that had it just gave it to me when I found my papers in the case.

Beautiful human story from a superb musician. I'm not even a country fan or a bluegrass fan . But boy he can play that axe like a demon on fire. Unbelievably talented guitarist.
This story is so amazing. I’m 54 and have 3 sons with two of them that play guitar. The love and and sacrifice that you showed Billy is unreal. Your dad is blessed to have a son like you. Really a heartwarming story.
Great story. Seven hundred bucks don't come easy even once, but three times, like it was meant to be. You're both lucky to have each other in these days we're now living in. Thanks for sharing.

Bless you Billy. What you did there defines you as a person. It shows who you are and exactly how special a musical soul you have. Your dad is so lucky to have a kid like you.
Hey Billy, I'm an old guitar man myself. So were my Dad, his name was Billy, and his dad, Lester. They are both gone now, but I still commune with them occasionally with the starvation box, as Arthel Watson used to call it. Thank you so much for your Dad's guitar story. It reminded me of some of mine, like the time I had to sell my 1941 D28, but you know, we're just taking care of them for the next guy___like you! God bless you, Billy.
Imagine if the Coen Brothers made a movie about the story he just told. That’s where my mind went. You can tell exactly why he is so brilliant writing lyrics by the way he told that story. Just pure soul
If it were a Coen’s film he woulda ended up robbing the guy’s house for the guitar and accidentally killing him the process and then being hunted across the country by the sellers’ acquaintances because there’s a stolen diamond hidden and glued to the inside of the guitar that is worth a fortune.

Keep it up this Louziana picker is digging it. Also thank your luckiest star that you had a pops and momma that cared and put that guitar in your hand. Great job Billy A true player And my old Ibenize Concord 1974 is still being played daily by my son I hope it lives as long as i can enjoy the tradition also Great story Love From Nova Scotia Canada
Love those family guitar stories. Back in the summer of 1963 -- when my parents separated, my older brother went out pawn shop hunting to find me an electric guitar. I was always snagging his 1960 Jazzmaster and he was getting tired of it. So, he found this 1954 Stratocaster, and came home and eventually told my dad about it. We went downtown to look at it. Looked fine to me. They closed it up and I grabbed the handle of that beat-up tweed case and started to walk out. I was all of 16 years old, so I didn't understand "layaway." I was supposed to pay for it, but I made so little money cuttin' grass that I eventually forgot about the guitar and holding up my end of the payment bargain. Fast forward a few months to Christmas. My dad was no longer living in the house, but there was that '54 Stratocaster under the tree ... the best Christmas present I ever got or would get (kind of like that BB gun movie, right?). Well, I played that guitar in a band with my older brother for all of 1964 and half of 1965. One night, we played a community center in Palatka FL, fifty miles to the south of our hometown. Then we drove back up a dark, lonely highway and dropped off our drummer on the westside of town. When we got back in the car, we forgot to run up the back glass of the station wagon. A few minutes later, we drove over a bridge and stopped to pay toll. When we took off, the guitar started to slide, there in the darkness. Then, out on the expressway, it dived on out the back. Somebody stopped and picked it up before we could get back to it, and they were gone into the night, early morning, 25 July 1963. That was the last I saw of it, a special Stratocaster, because we had switched out the worn out neck for a Jazzmaster neck! Still waiting for that one to come back!
