They are quality hifi equipment similar to what the likes of Sony, Panasonic and other brands used to do.
The market now only seems to be very high end with enough quality gear at reasonable prices.

I have those speakers. They are worth for the money. The vocals and midtones are reproduced very well, the highs are a little bit emphasized for my ears, but can be easily lowered at 10kHz by ton control at amp.
The bass is deep and loud, but is boomy and lacks a little bit more punch from 80Hz-120Hz but is possible this to be caused by my room acoustics.

I was almost decided to buy them (as 5.1 set) but one thing that stopped me was the fact that it is not possible to listen to them at any Polish Hi-Fi store. I know, it is possible to purchase them and try them at home up to 8 weeks - if not satisfied, just return them, and the money will be refunded. But it's no better than comparing few different speakers in Hi-Fi store and take one of them. That's what I'm going to do. I consider three 5.0 sets: Wharfedale Diamond 11.4+11.1+11.CC, Q Acoustics 3050i+3010i+3090Ci and Jamo C97+C91+C9. I will listen to them at the store and choose the best one.
One conclusion - Teufel, you need to start selling through distributor to Hi-Fi stores ;)

Thanks for english review. I am thinking about buying pair of those but unfortunetelly I can't find them in any store in Warschau. Only shipping directly from Germany so I won't be able to hear them before buying. I was also considering IL Nota 550. Could someone give me an advice?

Are you saying that I can’t buy 4 of them and my Yamaha av receiver? My current av can do 100W per channel.. and I have a good subwoofer that I want to keep..only 4 + center.. I want to also put 2 in the back next to me on my couch

can i make a stupid question about the bi-amping? these speakers (i see many others too) are rated '4-8' ohm right? so.. if you have an amplifier only capable of 8 ohms you will have to use 'speaker A and B' and bi-wire the speakers, right? if not bi amping the speakers you will run the speakers at 4 ohm on a 8ohm amp.. not good

Great review! I'm thinking about buying a pair of Teufel Ultima 40 and I'm wondering what are your long term feelings about these speakers. I'm planning to pair them with an Audiolab 6000a, do you think this can be a good fit?
Do you have them paired with the Audiolab 6000a now? Because I have that exact setup right now, I recently bought a 6000a and I have the Ultima40 MK2's for about 4 years. I do have some room accoustics problems though and overall It's a bit of a hit/miss situation. Sometimes it lacks higher frequencies but sometimes it's nice and balanced, really dependant on the type of music and without tone controls its not easy to get it to my taste. The 6000a is very clean and linear though but just maybe a little subtle on the high frequencies. Could be a matching issue though, the amp overall reminds me a lot of my home built Power Amp, a 2x 200watt Class A/B symmetrical amp with 2x400 watt transformers, although way bigger and heavier, it just sounds almost identical. Just no nonsense very simple circuitboards, no tone controls either. The electronical parts also sound identical, the 50hz hum at power-on and the delayed relays to power the final stage. Overall the 6000a is very well built and just a nice discrete amplifier that does not take up a massive amount of room and doesn't draw crazy amounts of power. I use this setup mainly to watch youtube video's, movies and play games on a big TV via a computer. I somehow never really liked the Ultima 40's sound, It's a bit boomy in the mid-low and I don't always like how voices sound, they are very present and maybe a bit too much so. But this also depends very much on the source as well. Speaker cases could definately use some bracing, they sound a bit hollow when tapping on the sides and the slight resonance that comes with that has annoyed me from day one. I'm going to try out a set of Definition 3's soon I guess, it's quite a jump up in price but perhaps it's worth it. I also think a great amp like the 6000a should be paired with better speakers anyway. The MK40's are great for the price (Bought them for just 350 euro's for a set!) but are essentially just budget speakers... They do have the best finish I have ever seen for the price though and they also look the part (In my opinion, even better than MK3). Would be interesting to hear from your perspective.
Is that a ribbon tweeter speaker in the background? Do you have a preference on tweeter types?
It's an AMT, Air Motion Transformer, I don't have a specific preference, whatever works best, in that case for my personal speakers that was that one, the red ones in the background are only my surround speakers though

Ik had boekenplank speakers van €600,- staan, een wereld van verschil.
Ook als tv speaker zeer geslaagd ik heb soundbars van €1100 terug gestuurd maat deze ultima’s blijven.
Zeer zeker veel speaker voor je geld.
Wil dit bedrag uitgeven aan speakers niet meer twijfelen maar kopen je gaat ze niet meer terug willen sturen.
Ik heb ze deze week besteld voor 290 euro, christmas deal at Teufel, volgende week worden ze geleverd, ik ben echt benieuwd

Well I don't think so anymore, stopped reviewing them entirely. Total mainstream brand with a totally generic sound, completely tailored towards maximum value and first second impression with nothing further to build up upon.

There will never be ONE BEST speaker no matter at what segment. They all cook with water, so differences and a similar price will always be small
Thank you very much for your review, I think I can "invest" a bit more than the mentioned 500 Eur mark but it was really informative. I am living in Germany but unfortunately my "Deutsch" still suxx, I noticed some really interesting prices on German brands, but I lacked testing or comparison references. I still have my (all bought in 1995?...) KEF Q55 pair attached to my Audiolab 8000S, both not that cheap long ago, I really do not care about home theater, I am still into audio, music only, old school. I think my amp is still okay, but the KEFs now and then sound really dull, with no detail in the mids, and boomy bass even with those bass holes covered. A real bargain reference for entry-level floorstand speakers in the last decade is (still?) the SONY SS-CS3, they are not perfect but with impressive low price levels for the delivery till this day, how would those rate in comparison with these Teufel for instance? that would be an interesting exercise. What would be your "German brand" model choice for a budget of let's say 1200-1500 EUR? New or Used, I am not picky...

Thanks fornthe review. I broight it after looking your review. As you said i was suprised with presentation for 500 euro.sound i mist say i am very disappointed. The tweeter is full of noise and at times i felt if the speaker has separate circuit to add noise. Spund is never clean ofcourse the base and mid range is acceptable.
So you covered that these sound nice when used with loud volumes. But how well they play when used with low volume? How rich sound can i get when i play with volumes that don't wake up the kid next room? There's a huge difference in that on different sets of speakers and why Genelecs are considered one of the best.
They sound good at low volumes but not amazing and for that you will need a very high end system with a good well built amp and speakers that work together.
For quality hi-fi gear they do sound good and for the price you cannot really go wrong. Sony and Panasonic used to make hi-fi gear like that.
@@bighands69 Thanks but i mentioned genelec for a reason. Sony and panasonic don't fight even in the same league. Just a regular smallish studio monitor size genelec speaker is 3000 euros each. They are that good and people pay up. But not everyone have that kind of money to spend on speakers.

Thank you for the video! Right now on the teufel website they have some floor standing speakers for about £350 pounds which seems very cheap so this has helped no end! Are Tuefel considered a high end brand in Germany, on par with Yamaha let's say?
Nope, it's a total budget brand, all made in China.

Unless you are buying hand made audiophile speakers the chances are they maybe manufactured in China.
Even some of the better known brands that everybody bangs on about are manufactured in China and you have to buy their very high speakers to get those made in the UK.
Chances are anything you buy under €1000 are probably made in China or the components are and they just get assembled else where.
Bi-amping these speakers actually sound very good. I’m using a powerful Yamaha receiver (RX-Axxx series) After bi-wiring them I noticed deeper and tighter bass and mid-high a little more present. But tighter bass is clearly noticeable. Try it out, and you don’t want to return to standard wiring...
I've been using bi amping long enough to know it's mostly a placebo, especially with an AV that can't deliver the sound of an normal stereo amp at all, and at this price bi amping is mostly a marketing ploy
Damir Franc - I’m a musician. I have really good ears. The difference is possibly not measurable, but certainly audible. People denying that just don’t hear it.
By the way I’m using an 1.800 Euro Yamaha Receiver and I’ve just bought these Teufel speakers (surround and stereo setup) because of many positive comments and because I very much like the design. I was somewhat disappointed because of low and not so accurate bass level of these speakers, until I tried bi-wiring. You should reconsider your knowledge about bi-amping / bi-wiring because it very definitely is NOT just a marketing gag.
those speakers with that AV isn't a good budget balance. Also why do so many musicians think they have better ears, one doesn't automatically come with the other but placebo is also a real thing

Bi-Wiring is something that gets used on high end large scale systems such as auditorium where the engineer is looking of lower levels of impedance. Now that is not realistic for home audio in a small room because if you have speakers that large you are going to need go to hospital after.

I can get the Ultima 40 surround 5.1 set for only 700, if these 40 MK3 are worth the 500 the 5.1 will definitely be worth the 700 :D
Just need to sell some old stuff first, hopefully I can get them soon, my current 5.1 set is soooo mediocre, cheap ass sony stuff from an old bluray player. I'm expecting such a mad upgrade in sound!!! I know they aren't perfect but I bet I'm going to love them and if not, 8 weeks return policy :D

About your question on whether I'd like to see more speaker reviews... I'm not sure to be honest. When it comes to speakers that are a good deal and should be recommended, or the contrary, then sure. Problem is that there's always the danger that they will become interchangeable for anyone who isn't actually interested in the speakers.

In America there is Klipsch and Polk that offer good quality Hi-fi speakers at a good price.
Teufel in my opinion do offer products on a par with both of those brands. You can get amazing deals in America for the likes of Polk.

Best speakers are KEF, B&W and other but not one of the best speakers are made in Germany
you obviously have never heard one of the smaller, lesser known german high end brands. Also B&W lol, it's the biggest, also most overpriced joke on any hifi fair I've been to so far
You are not getting many KEF speakers at those prices and I would say to get that quality of Hi-Fi speakers in many brands you are talking in excess of €1000.
