Bruce Berger has a great book called "There Was A River", mostly a compilation. He rafted down it in '62, and ended up stumbling onto the set of "The Greatest Story Ever Told". Turns out the River Jordan scene was filmed on the Colorado! On page 38, he tells a friend's (named Remo) story of going down the river and being able to float into a feature called "Music Temple". They reached a cleft that was 75 feet above water when Berger explored the temple in '62. When Remo explored it, the cleft was reachable by water. He and his group found a ledge barely protected by an overhang, full of artifacts from the Basketmaker III culture. A year later, the cleft was 10 feet underwater.
The whole section about Glen Canyon is ~60 pages and fascinating. Check it out sometime!

Water is a great way to hide things, at the same time providing water to where it's needed. It has been said, just the Grand canyon alone can paint a different kind of history to what we were taught in school if people were allowed to explore it.

For a renewal power source, people forget just how destructive hydroelectricity is. You need huge reservoirs which flood valleys and canyons, displace both humans and animals, interrupt the natural flow of the river for aquatic animals, sometimes even depriving large sections of the lower river of water. The Colorado River (as I understand it) barely makes it to the sea anymore. In Australia, the Snowy Hydro scheme & other dams has decreased the flow of the Murray, Murrumbidgee and Snowy Rivers anywhere from 40-80% (depending on how much rain there has been).

Beautiful scenery. I watched a documentary, probably on YT, that had clips of old footage of the canyon before it was flooded. It was incredibly beautiful. So sad it’s hidden but nice it’s re-emerging. But that will be at the expense of people in the west who need the water.

Duuuuude this is epic. I didn't know there was all this history under the lake! Why would they do this? I looked it up and the project was approved in April 1956. Why was this such a priority then? They clearly knew they would be flooding history away, and then did just that. Also I am seeing the original purpose of the lake, to "control flooding" is now obsolete. So it can be drained yet there is strong opposition to that, for now. I like how you ended the video, it's true! One day these canyons will be revealed again

Energy + water storage was the main goal on paper. It is the 2nd largest reservoir in the US in a very resource constrained area. Thats all they cared about back then . However, it has dramatically backfired on the water front. Due to the huge surface area, we lose an insane amount of water to evaporation here every year. It's a large part of why the Colorado has diminished. Yep it'll come back. Question is- how soon

    • @coolbaj
      @coolbaj 6 месяцев назад +1

Wow that's wild. Looking it up, the reservoir was at its highest in 1983 and is now 185 feet down from that highest fill. I didn't know that much had already evaporated! That's 40 years to evaporate 185 feet. Not sure how deep it is now but I'd estimate another 20+ years to evaporate the vast majority... I see another article saying on June 13 this year, 40,000 acre-feet of water leaked out of the reservoir 🤔

    • @ruinsandridges

@coolbaj, many lakes that were man-made in the West had this happen. Because native people lived along creeks and when the creeks were dammed, so much was washed underneath. We find Native pottery sherds around all our lakes here in Arizona, and wonder how much is under the water.

My father was doing the electrical work before this dam was finished and he came home telling of the civilization that was once there, He said the ruins there showed of a prior civilization that
left behind a lot of old relics. He felt bad that it was being covered up and not recognized by those in charge, since then I’ve found that most dams and golf courses cover prior civilizations not recorded, our true history is hidden and not in our texts books.

This isn't just sightseeing This is a form of environmental activism with the impact of an atom bomb. This is technology enlightening the world to what's going on right in our backyard. This young man is a hero.

Thank you SO MUCH for this great production. Every human must see this. I've been there many times, and to many areas surrounding the lake and canyon; but I know I've just barely scratched the surface. With this vid, I feel like I know a whole lot more. I do understand though that there's much more to see and learn about this wondrous place. Thanks again!

You walk too close to the edge, but what is life without a little risk. Your life flashed before all of our eyes as you jumped in tot he water!! 😱 I think given the water is gradually receding, and water has a way of preserving things, there is a chance some of the historic ruins and artifacts may be still intact. Probably important to document as much as possible as the waters peel back, as the exposure will have them decay quite rapidly. Can't wait to see more.

Across a couple of years, I've seen a few of your videos. The Sky Island video lead me to here, which is when I subscribed. How you were able to capture a small piece of Glen Canyon just floored me.
You should be glad to know that others feel very similarly, about restoring Glen Canyon to its original state. The western drought has obviously lowered the water levels for both Lake Powell and Lake Mead. It's very unlikely that either reservoir will ever be close to full again. So over the next couple of decades the Bureau of Reclamation has very hard decisions to make, to sacrifice one to save the other, not just for water but electricity generation too.
If Lake Powell reaches dead pool levels for several years consecutively, political pressure will built to simply demolish the Glen Canyon Dam to save Lake Mead.

My parents were river runners on the Colorado before the Glen Canyon Dam. They obviously felt that Lake Powell was a mistake and would talk about the wonderful formations that were submerged. However it didn't damper there love for southern Utah and they passed that on to me. It's by far my favorite place on earth.

@@the_pov_channel There's a word for this "Hiraeth" It's not really translatable.....but it's a homesickness, or mournful longing for a place or home that is gone, no longer exists, existed only in antiquity, or perhaps never at all. A pull or mourning, or longing. It's a Welsh word.
