Her wiki says she understands, but doesn't speak, italian. I actually heard her speak italian in an interview and even though she said she "spoke it with a terrible french accent" it was in fact very good.

Jodie speaks flawless french , so does her sister. Not only is Jodie's french accent absolutely perfect, her french itself is better than most French people today. She oozes intelligence , even in a foreign language.

As a Frenchman, I am in total admiration with her. She actually does both versions of her films, in english and then dub in french. She's amazing !
Hats off to anyone who has learned to speak another language or is attempting to do so! No matter how proficient that person becomes in that language, the effort the person makes is a sign of respect for and recognition of a culture that is different from his/her own. A language is much more that just a bunch of words.
Jodie Foster speaks French fluently. She has spent years studying the language that it's practically second nature to her.

Afrikaans is Dutch, old-Dutch. I'm Dutch and it's always fun hearing Charlize talk my native language.

Thanks so much for this compilation. I'd never known that Sandra Bullock spoke German so well. It's great to see these stars out of their comfort zone in English and risking to make mistakes in another language on camera.

knowing foreign languages opens many doors and hearts :-) i speak czech, slowak, english, german, relativly good russian and understand some of spanish basics. It helps me not only being able to understand other people but to learn about new cultures. It is a beautiful thing. I can only encourage everyone to learn at least one foreig language. thank you so much for this video!

many of the celebrities "other languages" here actually are their native languages (alanis morissette is from quebec, arnold from austria et cetera.
the funny thing with language learning is that once you start, it gets easier and easier, take spanish as an entrance to the latin world, for instance, in no time, you could learn portuguese, italian, french and romanian (let alone catalan, provençal...) or german (swedish, danish, norwegian...) it opens so many doors to the traveller!

Many of the celebs here have foreign parents or lived overseas as children. Kobe lived in Italy for many years when his dad play basketball there. Leo Dicaprio has a German mother and italian father. Sandra Bullock's mom was also German. Viggo Mortensen was born in NY to an American mother and a Danish dad. He also grew up in Venezuela, Denmark, Argentina & the US. He once said in an interview that he feels most comfortable speaking Spanish. As an American, I speak English, Spanish & some German

Here's a fun one. Earle Hyman, the grandfather on The Cosby Show, fell in love with the work of Norwegian playwright Ibsen as a student, so he spent time in Norway and learned the language to really know the works. He has spent a lot of time living in Norway, even becoming a Norwegian TV star. There are clips on RUclips.

Spanish is the most beautiful and romantic language ever... I'm glad that my mother language is Spanish and English is my second one... Now I'm learning Portuguese because ill be moving to Portugal next year... Putting in your résumé that you know more than 3+ makes you feel so damn good :)

Well. She did all of her school years in the US but in a French speaking school. French was the exclusive language taught in Math, history, biology, etc... Not to mention, before being known as an actress, she had a short-lived career in France as a singer.
Jodie speaks French extremely well, I only count bilingual to those who speak their native tongue and LEARN another language. I don't count those who were born in Mexico and moved to the US and HAD to learn English. I think it's important to learn a language to be culturally aware. I know a bit of French, Spanish, Greek and Russian :)
I have a passion for languages. I understand Greek, Italian, and only speak English and french fluently. someone I love who is Latina was my inspiration to learn Spanish! I just love the way it sounds and there are many places to use it!!
She lived in Germany until the age of 12. The first years are crucial to develop good accent and pronunciation. After the age of 9 is really difficult to reproduce the sounds of another language without sounding inevitably 'foreign'.

I'm French, and I also speak German, Jodie Foster speaks a really good french without any accent but I have heard it on some french tv shows, so it was not a surprised. But I was really surprised by Sandra Bullock's German accent because I didn't know her German origins before reading your comments.

I was born in Taiwan, I can speak and write Mandarin (Chinese). Then I lived in Spain for thirteen years, so I speak Castellano (Spanish) too. Later I came to the US to study graduate school, I had to speak English as well. Now I would like to learn French, so I can live there for a while after I retire from my job.

Wow, it's no wonder you never learn speaking a foreign language properly. But on the other hand it saves you a lot of difficult work, cause here in The Netherlands they start teaching English at the age of 9, French at 12 and German at 13. Well that's one hell of a job to many of us without a linguistic talent.

I'm American and I know the difference between the two. There are very distinct dialects throughout Austria, especially around Graz where Arnold is from: it's the difference between "Ich freue mich" and "I frya mi."
I never really though German was beautiful until I met the most beautiful german girl. I fell in love with her and now have a strong desire to learn German.
You are actually right, Spanish speakers and Portuguese speakers can understand each other talking their native language, but only if both speak slowly, clear and without idioms (Portuguese speakers have easier to understand Spanish than vice versa). But in fact Swedish and Norwegian are much closer than Portuguese and Spanish.
I'm a native Spanish speaker and I also speak fluent Swedish.
