    stress is a massive gains destroyer. I remember a period I was training hard making really good strength gains then got a new job which was really stressful and was too dumb at that point to dual training back to compensate for that. All my gains went down the drain and down the drain fast. Once that stress cup is full any further stress is really detrimental.

      So very true. I'm starting to gather new info on the neurological effects of strength training and what's detrimental to it. Seems stress is enemy #1 to gains. Both physical and mental stress.

      so fucking true..if you go into the gym feeling negative you will get negative results..man I hate having depressive periods because I legit cant put my 100% into anything

    Dude, for real, I think i never commented yet - but damn, are your videos helpfull! I have been working out for 2-3 years, but only now I seem to be getting the hang of the BASIC conncepts. I have beenn watching (only free) YT-Tutorials - I never had a coach, training program etc. and I think, that it is really hard, to describe all these factors, that will determine weather or not you make progress. Maybe it´s just me, but I think most of the stuff you have to learn/apply by yourself to get better.
    As is said, today I think I know how to apply basic concepts, so Im a "good beginner" or "bad intermediate" - but I think i can safely say, that you are one of the people, who helped me the most by explaining stuff properly.
    Keep it up, man!

    I recently stopped using any electronic device (e.g. smart phone, tablet, PC, etc.) after 7:30 p.m. and found that my sleep has improved drastically.

    Thanks for the quality information Matt. I was just watching a video by a popular RUclips fitness speaker, and he was saying skinny guys should eat a RIDONKULOUS amount of food, and it just whiffed of bro-science B.S. (and this particular youtuber has plenty of followers/social proof). Thanks for setting the record straight.

    Amazing and helpful bigtime. The thing about realizing the quality of eating by feeling the workout performing better is new to me I heard it for the first time. BUT, makes good sense, when feel I have good energy, what else it should be of not because of food I ate? At the muscle growth is at the end. Thank you.

    I agree. The reason why sleep is important is because most of the hypophysis hormones responsible for cell growth are at a peak plasma concentration during the night sleep.

    In Part 1 of these 2 videos you said you that by working out you initially went from 150# to 160# and then hit a plateau. And then later you were able to work up to 190#. But you never said exactly what was the main change you made to break through that plateau. So you just started sleeping more and eating better food and that did it? There must have been some other change you made beyond that.

      I like periodic fasting, I sometimes will skip a meal or go without my snacks in the afternoon. As for fitness as we get older that's a tough subject especially these days. I'll cover that in another video.

    I don't personally agree with every thing you say, I like your delivery. And some Principles really hit home and make me focus more on very important points that can streamline confusion. Keep Videos coming, glad I found you. Going to try the Everyday schedule again, but like one of your replies, needs to be something you can do. So Deadlifts will take a back seat (because my back feels work now and can't see doing it everyday. I choose exercises I can--including my Total Gym,,that is pretty easy if just doing a set or two per exercise (still progress) every day. i need to get the TG where you can add weights to it, thats what I need/want. Mine is medium level. I like How you say even 1 more rep in a workout, great advice, I try to do that, always have. Sometimes you need to go back and "Reload" though

    Hi there been really struggling to gain muscle. I've been working out consistently for 12 weeks ,I'm wondering if its too early to see serious gains.Now I have seen some change but not alot.,my biggest problem is what I eat.i try to get in as much protein as I can but I don't think my in take is enough,after seeing your video I know that I am not getting enough sleep,I just need some help on the whole eating and building muscle, I love calisthenics and I wanna be a serious calisthenics athlete

      Struggle to build muscle is usually of things we aren't focusing on too much. Like if you're getting protein at each meal that may be enough and I would bet money that lack of sleep is the factor. Also, are you tracking your workouts and aiming to make progress each week?
      hang tough building muscle is a marathon, a very long marathon.

    I have worked with two trainers lifting like a maniac 4 days a weeks for two years- as well as consulting regularly with a nutritionist. I eat very healthy.
    I sleep 8 hours a night consistently. I don’t drink or smoke. And yet, rather than gain ten pounds of muscle, which was my goal, I LOST ten pounds. Yet I don’t look any different than I did when I started two years ago. I have spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours trying to build muscle and I can’t. My trainers are baffled and I’m so demoralized I just want to quit. I am 6’2” 180 lbs. I’m a bean pole. It’s pathetic. I could eat junk food non-stop for a year and not get fat. I don’t know what’s wrong with me but I’ve had it. I’m through with the gym. I’ll never look good. I just have to accept that I will always look like a holocaust survivor. That’s my genetics. You can’t fight your genetics. But thanks for you video anyway.

    I have a better suggestion
    Sweet potatoes with butter
    Red potatoes with butter
    Romaine with salsa
    Banana with real plain yogurt
    Steamed beets
    Cultured vegetables or sauerkraut
    Eggs with kefir cheese and salsa or green Chile
    Almond milk mixed with banana
    Watermelon with lemon squeezed on it ,also apples
    papaya ,it's so good 4 ya
    Avacados with sliced onion
    tomato ,olives, salt and paprika
    chicken ,duh right ,flavor it add some lemon ,fresh lemon
    Skip the simple sugars ,go for complete foods nutritionally,you'll feel much better .

      I do it everyday and it works really well and you don't feel hunger as much as you'd think. I wake up at 8:30, drink water first, then coffee/tea, at 12 I have my protein shake, workout at around 3-4 and have feast afterwards and you can treat yourself with some sugar. just get your calories in your window and fast as long as you can but you don't have to kill yourself. like he said just stay consistent and do it everyday

    Hey! Just a quick clarification, jelly and vanilla ice-cream are or aren't healthy for you? I mean they are simple sugars as you said.....won't one gain unwanted flab from that sort?

      All depends on the calorie balance as a whole and other factors like activity level, muscle mass, lifestyle, and so on. It's impossible for a single type of food or ingredient to directly cause you to get fatter or leaner as I explain in my book: goo.gl/MTUzDZ

      Strength training is much more about the nervous system than just the muscles themselves. Think of a car, your muscles are like the wheels, they are what we often put our attention to, but it's the engine and transmission (which is your nervous sytem) that's driving your muscles (wheels)

      For sure, everyone should have something simple to make their abs stronger. Some ab wheels or simple hanging leg raises will do wonders and be about all you need.

    My standard sleep is like ~6-7 hours, waking up 3x because i can't breathe throught my nose because of allergy. No way to do anything against it. I hate it. For 30 years now.

    ice cream & PB? if I needed to gain a lot of weight quickly, that is exactly what I would eat. maybe I'd alternate it with walnuts and honey. :)

      Good call. Nuts are a great addition to so many meals and foods. They also add much needed texture, fat and self (if salted) which can really improve the flavor profile of a dish.

    Sleep Deprivation is my curse, is there a way to work around that? (that doesen't involve any kind of medication).
    I don't drink or smoke or any of those things, I simply can't manage to sleep (but even if I manage to sleep I'll rarely rest, so...).
    Meditation has helped me like crazy, but still can't get to actually rest.
    It's also related to problems sailing around in the subconscious, but what kind of problems would a 6-13 year old have to not be able to sleep?, I'm almost 28 now.

    Don't get this, Iam 16 years old I'm pretty skinny but still Iam pretty musculair by doing 4 months of training Iam not buff but more lean and musculair at the same time when your skinny Will show up more

      For sure, being lean will make you look more muscular. Keep training hard, your best must building years are still ahead of you.

    I work in medicine and with people getting injured sick ect. theres always alot of tension there. so I put a clock on the ceiling on the floor below me. this whole time under tension thing doesnt seem to make my muscles grow am I doing something wrong? I mean the work outs work fine just feel like I am missing something here....

      Keep in mind that time under tension is a 2-part equation, it's time (for sure) but also the amount of tension in the muscles. The amount of tension in the muscles needs to be progressive so your muscles need to also work harder per unit of time.

      @@RedDeltaProject yes and this is done by perfecting form mind muscle connection focusing on contracting muscles durring sets. doing different variation adding intensity like taking less breaks between reps. and adding volume. different days more sets ect.

      @@RedDeltaProject I have been focusing more on that stuff more lately. instead of just doing like instead of just doing 20 pull ups focusing on the essentric and lowering my self down over 2-3 seconds while focusing on really squeezing my lats and biceps through out the full range. while also keeping my abs and glutes activated. its taken my reps down to 15 but it really is making a huge difference. good tip though.

    Does anybody knows why my left shoulder crack(without pain just ugly noise that i hate) when doing deep push ups to the ground every single rep, especially close push ups?

      Sometimes a joint cracking is a sign of lack of support. I had the same issue on my left shoulder and it was due to lack of lat strength and tension. Your lats are a very foundational muscle for your shoulders so I would look there first and make sure they are engaged for all pushing moves.

      Matt im pretty sure i am doing all right scapula movements during push ups and also feel it, but something when i go deep down it cracks and then when go up cracks louder like my tendon is sliding to the bone

      It may be simply muscular tension, a lot of that, that keeps the joints tight in a non "normal" way and when you move the muscle/joint you hear that "creepy" sound. I used to have a constantly tense body (due to stress and anxiety) and a lot of parts of my body doing that sound when moving them: I found that working on improving my posture, doing stretching/yoga, and relaxing my muscles worked fine (I still have some stiff parts doing that sound, especially in the back, but I found it stops when I focus on the correct posture, tensing the opposite muscle than to that that causes the tension).
      I hope it can help you, I bet you have that part of the body very contracted in a "bad" posture ;)

      That's a pretty old school idea actually. Some of the old school strongmen used to drink whole milk and eat chocolate bars as a regular part of their diet. Dan John in his book Mass Made simple suggests peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
      It's not about what the food is, that's not as important, but rather having access to calories, fat and protein along with some simple sugars. For sure, it's not for everyone, but the idea of not eating too strict when trying to put on size is as old as the hills.

    the thing is, let's take an egg. the saturated fat and cholesterol that come with the protein are very high in terms of the daily dosage recommended to maintain healthy levels of those. which high amounts of those raise your chances of illnesses and diseases. unlike per say legumes which have only have healthy benefits and ate packed with protein and antioxidants

      your right though plants dont contain any saturated fat at all ever. nor do they contian plant sterols that can raise or lower cholesterol by mimicking the molecule. its not technically bioidentiacal but theres a wide range of what they call phyto hormomes some mimick estrogen or progestin or cholesterol. or no plant ever contains saturated fat ever only animals. coconuts for instance have 0. olives avacodos nuts legumes have 0 also. plant oils esecially coconut oil has the lowest saturated fat ever. its lower than low. I mean butter has 64% saturated fat coconut oils has 90-100% coconuts raw have 30% saturatef fat by volume. but only animals have it.

      the truth is everything has some saturated fat any plant has it some have high saturated fat same as animals. phyto hormomes like phytocholesterol is the same as animal cholesterol and the truth is high amounts of saturated fat is what mostly raises cholesterol dietary cholesterol from either source mostly gets broken down by the stomach. you want to aviod eating high amounts of saturated fat from.either plants or animals. eggs can be part of a healthy diet. its over all what you eat not all the micro instances of something that could lead to be bad. instead of buying standard beef which is 50% fat 30% of that is saturated fat then 20% monounstaruated fat (heart healthy) and 5% polyunsaturated fats ( omega 3 and 6) opt for the 98/2 thats 98% lean and 2% fat. an avacodo has more saturated fat that that meat option. and 50% of leaner beef is monounsatruated fat. its good to be consious of food choice but you dont have to stop eating whole food groups.

    Hi! I love your videos! I just wanted to recommend you to check out Vegan Gain's channel to have a better understanding of nutrition and ethics involved in food! As you can see I'm a vegan and it hurts sometimes when people choose to eat animals because of the fitness industry and its propaganda that tells you to eat meat, fat free yogurt and egg whites. Anyways, you have great content man!!

      There is nothing wrong with eating meat. God made animals to be used for food, clothing, transport, protection, etc. There is nothing wrong with killing an animal to eat the meat. Just because the animal suffers does not mean it is wrong. That is just the sacrificial system we live in. God has allowed man to use certain animals for food. Animal foods contain nutrients that are not found in plant foods and are essential for health. Fat free yogurt however is not good, you need the fat.

    All stress can be erased by vitamin C and sleep, I measure my progress simply by the burn I feel in each rep. The thing with nutrition simplifies to this;
    carbs runs through in about 3-4 hours so if you aren't gonna burn it all then stick with fats and proteins;
    fats is all good just make sure you don't over eat those calories since it's compact, every polyunsaturated fat is good with a big exception to omega-6... people cut back on the
    processed vegetable oil, Nature doesn't squeeze the life out of corn and hydrogenate it at 500 degrees;
    And protein. Those other 3 minute clickbait videos say oh yeah 40grams is enough, 90 grams is good etc... 40 grams is enough if you are eating the 10% surplus calories total you're supposed to. 90 grams is great if you are getting most of your calories from protein in order to stay lean without losing muscle mass. BUT the most important thing is meat is only 21% protein and beans 24%, so to get that 90 grams of protein you need to eat A POUND of meat. a regular serving is 8 ounces which is ONLY half a pound. Therefore BACK to the original story; EAT MORE PROTEIN. I swear those other channels debunk their own myths just to pump out more videos, it's the 21st century, we have the answers, it's just covered up by all the penis enlargement pill ads.

    A good rule of thumb is 80% of your diet should be made up of single ingredient foods that you combine yourself through the skill of cooking. Don't buy anything that has 100 weird-sounding chemical ingredients in it. And fuck peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, when I need to bulk up I get a 1kg joint of grass fed beef and roast it. Lasts for days and is packed with energy, vitamins and protein. To build muscle, eat muscle ;)

    ectomorphs shouldn't build muscles, it's detrimental to their design of the body. they lose the muscles if they dont maintain it. so it's more work and workload on the body which reduces your lifespan. ecotmorphs should work out less, and rest more, and eat more regardless if they lift or not.

      if you are an ectomorph and turn up to a gymnastic session it doesn't mean a damn thing. You go through all the same training like all your friends do which is focusing becoming stronger. If you are consistent for a fews years training by the end no one remembers who the apparent ectomorph was, because everyone who has trained hard is ripped. This attitude of placing people into boxes is bullshit

      +mrzack888 you are so wrong. why do you think gymnasts/fighters put so much time into getting stronger? To reduce injuries and perform better. Most fighters and gymnasts were ectomorphs to begin with. Look at astronauts....extra muscle mass protects them. If you think being stronger and having more lean muscle mass is a bad thing then I feel sorry for you. Muscle is a byproduct of strength. stronger people are harder to kill and live longer, FACT!

      matthewlawless1 you are wrong. Gymnasts are NOT ectomorphs. They are usually shorter. I'm talking about ectomorphic body physiology types. look at high school and college basketball players, very tall and skinny and dunk no problem. Look at nba players pre 1970s, very skinny, lanky, and hardly any major ankle or knee problems.

      +mrzack888 I got news for you. Basketball players strength train for the ability to jump high and to have the necessary tendon strength to absorb the shock. They get some of this practicing their sport but the pros also supplement this with a good strength and conditioning programme. What do you think any athlete who has becomed insured does to try to come back. They start by strengthing the injured area back up to becoming stronger than what it was before they were injured to prevent it from happening again. When you make a area stronger lean muscle is the result. This is why most athletes who come back from a injury are noticeably stronger than they were before
