  • What's it like training an Australian national treasure?
Before Winx bids for racing history in the Ladbrokes Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, our Matt Chapman speaks to trainer Chris Waller on the pressures of training Winx, the star mare's development and big-race rider Hugh Bowman.
UK challenger Benbatl bids to foil Australian icon Winx and her run of a remarkable 28 victories in a row and Matt Chapman asks Chris Waller about the seven-year-old's form and the trainer's response to some calls from Europe about the real merit of what Winx has achieved.
Cool, calm and collected and the man who has masterminded the career of a global racing star, here's Chris Waller as you may not have seen him before...

I finally understand why so many people mistakenly think Frankel never raced outside Newmarket (I've read quite a few comments in online debates such as 'Frankel never travelled more than 2km from his stable'). It's Matt Chapman's comment at around 4:37 that Frankel 'never left Newmarket'. It's a confusing statement; I believe he means Frankel was always returned to his box in Newmarket the night after a race. While Frankel of course never travelled outside the UK, he did race at several courses around it (Ascot, Newbury, York, Doncaster, Goodwood). A poorly travelled champion indeed, but not as bad as some people make out! Glad I watched this; cleared up my confusion.

Gilbert mateo not sure that it was a question of bravery. Enable either went to the paddock or went to the BC, which is about as taxing on a racehorse as travelling from Melbourne to Sydney like Winx has done half a dozen tim s in her career. Winx made history staying in Australia. She’s won nearly $23m in stakes. Not sure h adding overseas was a priority.

What would be really interesting is if Winx is still in good racing shape at the beginning of 2019, and they actually take her to the
Queen Anne at Ascot on an A380. A win would shut many of these doubters up.

Hi guys and ladies. As doing equitation as hobby here in the small Island of Mauritius where horse racing is a national sport and gambling I just want to share my personal appreciation of a great horse be it a colt or a mare. Following horse racing for more than 30yrs now I can say that Winx is in fact the best mare around the world after Zenyatta in America. They both have this tremendous final acceleration which destroyed any opposition mainly Zenyatta who used to travel far back stretch and this cost her the last Breeders Cup classic where her world renowned jockey MS was over confident and lost by a neck. But Zenyatta is still the greatest at her time. NOW is WINX time and furthermore she gallops from sprint 1400m to longer 2040m and wins 29 consecutive big races since 2015 non stop. I think she is the greatest horse on this generation Z and respect from the world around.

Very true mate. He acknowledged that it is a legitimate question, which it is.
So fair play to him on that.
But they missed the boat, or the plane, they should have travelled in 2016 or 2017, she is too old now.
So he and the owners probably have questions to answer about ducking it in 2016/2017 but as it stands it's a moot point I suppose, she can only race what turns up.
But they know that the best horses in Europe won't travel to Australia, they never have and they never will.
In the past the C team and the D team have got the job done traveling to win the big Aussie races.
Now some of the players who haven't been successful are sending the odd member of the B team to try and get a win that's eluded them, but they will NEVER send the A team to Australia so if Winx doesn't travel she will never take on the best on the track, and everyone acknowledges it's too late for that.

He beat Scottish 1.5 lengths in the Gordon Stakes as a 3yo before coming to Australia (Winx was beaten in Australian Oaks as a 3yo) and beat him 3 lengths in the Prince of Wales' Stakes as an older horse after racing in Australia (Winx was a record 8 length winner of Australia's premier race the WS Cox Plate).

It's pretty simple to understand dimwit.
Do you think Criterion was capable of winning a PoW, KGVI or Breeders Cup Turf?
      Of course not.

      @leedelaney70 5 лет назад

@@elgransenor1472 anybody who has read our exchanges is likely to know who the dimwit is. To answer your question the Criterion of that day would have been competitive in any 2000m race in the world. He was just an inconsistent horse. When in his prime Winx beat him 5 lengths (she improved significantly the next 2 years) and Arc winner Golden Horn beat him the same margin when 2nd in a Juddmonte. Would Criterion get within 5 lengths of the 2016 - 2017 version of Winx ? Not a hope. To illustrate Criterion's inconsistency in 2016 he would later get beaten 4 lengths by The United States and 3 lengths by Hauraki in the Ranvet Stakes, horses Winx had no problems with. Later that year, when Winx was in her prime she smoked Hauraki 12 lengths in a Cox Plate over the same distance as the Ranvet.

Winx would have destroyed The Autumn Sun and as he was majority owned by Arrowfield Stud they were never going to put his commercial value in jeopardy. They couldn't get him into the breeding barn quick enough when his ageing champion stallion, Redoute's Choice, who stood at Arrowfield, died suddenly. He's standing for $77,000 and will get 150 - 200 mares in each of his first 3 seasons. That colt will make Arrowfield $100 million+. His sire Redoute's Choice was standing at Arrowfield 15 years ago for $330,000. He probably made Arrowfield half a billion dollars !!

It really is a stupid excuse. Discerning people know that Waller didn't send Winx overseas because the Prize money here in Australia is easy pickings, and why risk damaging the profile of the horse when u can keep beating Hartnell and Humidor and still make good money????????

They did it best with SYT. Get them over there early, let them settle in, take it slow and use a local trainer.
I don't believe all that I got it wrong stuff from AOB about him, that was just hyperbole before he went to stud.
There was nothing wrong with how he was trained.
The put him in some stupid races. He should never have raced on dirt, and he could have run 2nd in the Arc with better tactics.
He was better than people think. He would have beaten Winx in Europe. She might have had his measure in Australia but I would have backed him in Europe against her.
I don't question Winx over having no international wins, i question her over never beating a really good horse. That could have been in Australia as far as I'm concerned, but there has been no Northerly, no Vo Rogue, no Let's Elope, no Sunline to put her under any pressure at home.

Personally the rating system doesn't mean too much to me but it has to be respected. And the gentlemen who wrote first saying Enable and Cracksman would win against her is being absurd considering everything she is done. Truth is, Cracksman legacy won't be great and if Enable retires after the Breeders Cup Classic it's safe to say they will be whispers in racing history compared to Winx. If Waller was gonna take her abroard he should of done so a while ago. It was too late this year and I agree with the decision to keep her in Australia. Fair enough, reasonable points.
It's fair that she is rated the highest although, like you, I don't really have much faith in those ratings but I think they have it right with her.
What I don't accept is that her times, margins and sectionals prove she is the best.
Tracks in Australia are very different than the UK. The Aussie tracks are both flatter and faster, many UK tracks are heavier going and have uphill finishes. Horses often have to adjust from uphill to downhill and back to uphill in the last 800m. It's not just a slight rise like Randwick.
And the style of racing is very different.
Her times and sectionals are only relevant in comparing her to other horses racing in Australia.
