- My son Billy and I are taking a trip tot he East Somerset Railway to explore the world of steam. We take a ride in an old slam door carriage pulled by a lovely steam train - don't ask me what make or type because I haven't a clue.

What a lovely steam locomotive. Former GWR 0-6-2 tank engine built almost 100 years ago.
Such craftsmanship - like so much from the Victorian era!
What fun! I think the East Somerset Railway started with nothing, even the main station at Cranmore had to be completely rebuilt. Lovely loco as well. I always try and go for the compartments at a heritage line :)
Always good fun! The original Cranmore station is there but they moved another station's house there and rebuilt that.
Ah looks beautiful somewhere ive always fancied visiting we stayed at Watchet before and loved watching the trains pass

They are not connected. Been on the wsr that passes through watchet many times.
Gotta love an old steam train! Hope Billy knows what a privilege this was!!! These treasures may not be w/ us much longer. I've been on a few here in the States. Even though same time period they were more Old West instead of ornately Victorian. Love to take one of the tea trains they have in England!😍🚂

I thoroughly enjoyed that! At first I thought anorak time,but no! What was missing were the antimacassars on the back of the seats! When Billy tried to say something at the end and none sense came out,well that happens to me,all the time!!!
Luckily I do not know too much about trains and so didn't pack an anorak. Nonsense often spills out of my mouth! :)

Combining my two favourite subjects.......scenery and steam trains. My grandfather was a steam loco driver.

Well done i did enjoy that video, Billy has certainly been missing out having never been on the steam railway before. At 3:18 that is true what Billy, said people did actually go to the toilet out the windo, and for the woman they went in a pot in a hat box ! That was a lovely loco a designed by Charles Collett, it's a Great Western Railway 0-6-2, 5600 class or 56xx. Well done Richard and Billy great video 👍

Makes me feel lucky to have travelled by steam on the mainline in a childhood covering the very late days of steam (including idyllic days on the Isle of Wight). Dad worked on the old Southern Railway and latterly British Railways - likewise my uncle, and (briefly) much earlier on, my Grandad too, so there was a good deal of steam travel - much at "privilege" or even free rates...doubtless they later turned in their graves at my forty plus years in the bus industry - talk about being the black sheep of the family!

@@RichardVobes I wasn't driving them I'm afraid, but planning and scheduling the services...which would probably have made me an even worse turncoat in their eyes!

Nice little video Richard, if you are ever in Staffordshire you are invited to come and sample the Foxfield Railway at Blythe Bridge, near Stoke on Trent, where I volunteer. I'm sure it could be arranged for you to have a footplate trip on the engine. Perhaps the next time you're in Shropshire you could pop across.

Enjoyable video Richard, many years since I went to the East Somerset and good to see it prospering. If you've already visited the Bluebell & Kent & East Sussex railways, I can thoroughly recommend the Spa Valley line at Tunbridge Wells. As well as a lovely trip you will come across interesting geological features.

Nice one Richard , Billy . Love to see the old steam trains running. Would love to Know if they were using Welch steam coal. If they can still get it. Have been told that it smells totally different from normal coal. Anyway thanks for the videos looking forward to your next.
Welsh Coal? I don't know, but it was a joy to ride on the old railway and see the locomotive in action.
Great vlog of the standard gauge ESR. I'm a volunteer on the narrow gauge W&LLR (google for full info). Hope you can visit us here in Mid-Wales one day Richard and of course son Billy. Trains start at Easter.
I will have to get there and visit sometime. Sounds like fun - I need to go on more heritage railways. :)
Sure wish my health and income were such that I could travel and tour the UK, especially the railways and canals. Also a few aircraft and armor/armour museums.
Great video again. We went on the Kent & East Sussex Railway from Tenterden to Bodiam last year, lovely. I was thinking exactly the same about the Movements Supervisor! and I'm surprised you didn't purloin that basket of logs 😉

Steam rains do sound great but I cant help feeling that they are better to look at driving past than riding on because as a passenger you dont actually see the train do you? A steam train driving over a viaduct is just the best sight :)
ps. 7:23 of course in the days of steam there were no high vis jackets, made me chuckle anyway ;)
You are right of course, which is why I enjoyed this short journey. Once you are on board there is a point when you realise you are sitting on a train doing nothing. But getting out and watching the locos shunting about is where the fun starts.

nice video and its quite a pleasant thing to do.steam trains remind me of my favourite Charles dickens story.the Signal-man the story is also a part of the BBC Ghost Story series (1976).which is rather good indeed and was filmed on the Severn valley Railway a heritage Railway in Shropshire.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Severn_Valley_Railway
