Excellent plant. We planted one on your recommendation a few months ago. It's grown beautifully. Gets more sun than we'd thought that north side path gets, but keeping it well mulched and watered is keeping it happy so far.
I'm zone 6b/borderline 7a and I have two Illiciums which I planted last year. Both are in mostly shade and fairly moist soil. The variegated one, Pink Frost, is subject to some wind, so a couple times during the winter I covered it overnight for protection. It dropped some leaves early this spring but now has lots of new growth and is starting to flower. Smells great. The other one is more protected. It looked a little tired a few weeks ago, but is now putting on new growth.
The illicium resembles a rhododendron, insofar as its foliage and new growth habits. Is it a member of the rhododendron family? Looks like a great plant to add to the shade garden!
What a beautiful shrub. I truly love that you have Southern Living Plant Collections in your garden! Every one videos always educates me. ❤

I planted one a month ago and it has already put on quite a bit of growth! I love that it's a native too.

Is this and other illicium juglone tolerant? I would like to use it under a Black Walnut, and in an area where there are several Hickories.

It is not. It’s an ancient plant plant. So unique, but the leaf shape is def similar!
Is it possible to keep this to 3-4 feet tall with pruning?
You could
Are these flowers sterile?
They produce seed, we have not seen them reproduce invasively
