How is this like hacking computers? There is no security here that you are circumventing. Claiming hacking in this situation is like walking through the town square nude and then claiming people are peeping Toms.
@@PSUdaemon Hacking definition: The gaining of unauthorized access to data in a system or computer. You are assuming that as there is no security as such it makes it less of an offence. Your local taxi company may use DMR radio and give out address and name details to drivers, however, just because a 50 quid radio can pick it up does not make it a GDPR issue. The law is quite clear on radio interception and protects them from any breach.
Listening to any non commercial or amateur band broadcast is strictly illegal in the UK. The law is not often enforced but where information is intercepted and acted upon, then really bad things start happening. Witness the penalties, fines, and compensation being handed out for the newspaper phone hacking stories. If someone just listens covertly and never reveals the contents of what is overheard, then there is little the authorities can do because nobody will ever know. In some countries the mere possession of equipment capable of receiving these signals is a serious criminal offence which will result in a long term of imprisonment without appeal. SDR dongles are available everywhere, but connecting them up to a computer rather than a TV kind of gives the game away, especially if the computer is seized for examination. Just something to be aware of when travelling.
Pagers are still very much used in Australia as well, the biggest are Medical and emergency services. We do have a few networks still active outside of the above 2, but they mainly just transit alarms and dat, with the odd personal message here and there
I found in my case the audio from your device can be hit or miss especially for like Pocsag/Flex and unless you have a very strong signal it usually misses. The more tried and true way is to tap into the correct IF stage in your radio and with an interface (available) plug that into your computer com port. This method has given me 100% results. Again audio only maybe fine but maybe only if receiving strong signals, just my experience.
ambulance and firebrigade can easily be received in the Netherlands with PDW pocsag since the introduction of C2000 communication system for helpers. in 2005. There are a lot of transponders spread over our country.
I'm using an SDR dongle setup in SDR# and VoiceMeeter to send the audio to PDW. That way I can use VoiceMeeter to listen to the audio or shut it off but still have it go to PDW. This is all on a PC.
I find OpenEar SDR to be well better ..you dont have to mess around with audio levels if you plug and old dongle into windows. Its a slightly more sensitive decoder as well .
Pocsag is not as popular as it used to be, the software worked well for me many years ago using discriminator output from a ham rig. Apart from the emergency services and railway traffic pagers were popular amongst "twitchers" who would send a lot of group messages.
You're very lucky to have POCSAG at 153Mhz. I was rudely introduced to my 5 local POCSAG transmitters when I installed an outdoor antenna. Here they broadcast between 148.5Mhz and 148.9Mhz, nice and close to the 2m band.
To be honest some folks do suffer even at 153. This is why sotabeams sell a bandpass filter. They also bleed into 137 for those of us doing weather satellites. There’s even now a signal actually in the band too, which is worse! It’s so wide and blasts everything on the sides
@@MarkPentler I'm actually using a half of a 6 cavity duplexer from eBay as a low pass. Couldn't find anything else that was _sharp_ enough to keep much of the top of the 2m band. Seems to work well (according to NanoVNA anyway).
Good video for the beginner, but should mention that this can be done with the cheapest Chinese RTL-SDR USB Dongles that can be purchased online for $15! These can also be used to monitor the global CB Radio bands from 26 - 28 MHZ
My Marconi 2995R has built in POCSAG Transmit and Receive and my "R" version of the Marconi 2995 has an off air receiver. @@MevRB19 What on earth is all this "Woke" nonsense. It might be used for that where you live, but here it is quite disturbing and not something you would want to read. There is no need to be rude or offensive if someone is disturbed by anything like that.
I've noticed that the emergency services can get a rough location from a cell phone, even when the caller does not give one. Looks like: "Mobile Phone Coordinates, Closest Area Detected.."
can't pick up any messages for pocsag pdw i have followed all the steps and are getting a pocsag signal in sdr sharp but the signal meter in pdw is not moving and no messages are comming through in the pdw in the interface setup in the serial port section the port box is blank and not showing com1 like in the video might that have something to do with it
If you open up the volume control panel on windows, do you see any green bars moving on Virtual Audio Cable? If not, then that could possible be the issue.
So as of lately PDW stopped working for me. That is, I choose the VB audio, send the output of SDR# to that VB but apparantly PDW doesn't show that a signal is received. I read somewhere that the problem started with Windows 10 (I am running W11) but am curious if there is a solution for that problem
I can hear a POCSAG signal on my RTL-SDR device but since I'm using it on my phone with SDR Touch there is no way to accurately get it to my computer. The headphone output on android phones is too low and the SDR works poorly on my computer for some reason.
i have literally never been able to get a clean decode from PDW, it just never works no matter what settings are used. if you want to decode pocsag, then POC32 works great
