Forging A Mosaic Damascus Knife. Part 1.

  • A customer wants a mosaic pattern knife and I've got a mosaic damascus bowie build-off competition coming up. My first few attempts at the mosaic technique yielded straight trash! Time to figure this out once and for all. 1084 and 15n20 steel are forge welded then manipulated to form a special pattern used to construct a custom knife. Huaaaawwwwkkkkk! hang on, I've got a lugi.

    You're welds have really improved. And I have alway's loved you're content. I wish young people would watch people like you. Pure determination will alway's produce results. I have seen you screw up many times. And yet you don't give. So many praise success. When they should praise those willing to screw up. And look at you! You make sure others. That's guts, and guts is enough.

      I agree. Gotta say, I learn so much more from watching him work through the pitfalls in a process and flaws in a piece than I ever do from watching someone’s edited video of their final successful run-through. And that is why this is my favorite forging channel. It’s not just the perseverance but the willingness to share the real process with all it’s mis-steps that takes guts.

  • @bobbiscub

    It's crazy good much steel is used to create mosaic Damascus! You start with such a huge billet, and end up with such little steel!

  • @Smallathe
    @Smallathe 2 года назад +1

    Very very cool. Should be one gorgeous blade...
    It's always amazing how much work goes into a knife making. Not sure everyone appreciates it.
    And the loss of steel on the way due to oxidation is also immense.... but the result is more than worth it.

    80CrV2 etches more grey-ish for me. The darkest I personally got was 90MnCrV8, that's almost black due to the manganese and coincidentally also very sharp. Just take care not to forge it too cold else you get fractures.

  • @patrickdean9797

    a common theme with mosaic pattern weld steel is there is never enough i think that if you think you have picked enough material for your project then double it , it is better to have to much than not enough

  • @jaquigreenlees
    @jaquigreenlees 2 года назад

    I would say start making the billet with 4 times the metal desired for the project. The extra just becomes damascus you have available for future projects.

      You don't strictly need it. The low oxygen environment dissuades rust/scale from forming.
