      hey dred how do you carve the letter"R" out of a square in Ai??

      @@rellajamu7546 I added in some points to the square (Object > Path > Add Anchor Points) and moved those points with the direct selection tool and then rounded off the edges. If you're curious I do something kinda similar in my "Rave Graphics in Illustrator Part 1" video!

    Amazing tutorial as usual! I am wondering if there is a way to do this without merging the background with the letter?

      There is! But you basically have to separate all the blacks in the layer to achieve this. Double click on the merged layer, this will open the blend / layer styles menu. In the Blending options, go to “blend if”, and under “this layer”, slide the black slider inward. Afterwards, convert your layer into a smart object and voila!
