GUYS, you dont have to restart your computer! Open Windows Explorer, then open Task Manager, and sort by application name. Find Explorer and click the "Restart Task" button. This will refresh the Windows UI and kill any open Explorer windows. Open Explorer again, and voila! Your pictures, documents, etc. will look the same until you customize their views yourself.
I improvised this method because I am keen on _not_ restarting my PC. It's just time consuming in my opinion.

another option is open cmd, run "taskkill /f /im explorer.exe" then running "explorer" with no arguments

I am absolutely baffled. My explorer was kinda slow, so I tried this, only to then realize that I had been living in hell for a long time. Absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend.

The problem is that not enough people are seeing this video. They are all changing to general items in folder properties and it doesn't work. Then going back to reddit and complaining some more. Finally a solution that works!! I was going crazy with a superfast pc and the two internal M.2 drives.

Awesome! Though it seems the only thing required is to do the step to add the string value ../AllFolders/Shell/FolderType [NotSpecified], 3:07. No need to delete the BagMRU and Bags folders first. At least this worked for me. Now it's no delay on folders. Only thing that is a slight delay with green progress bar is to generate video thumbnails if folder is set to View as icons. I presume the video is not meant to address that type of delay anyway.

Holy hell this is the only thing that worked for me. Tried all of the other nonsense windows recommended fixes.
Initial symptoms: File Explorer super laggy, simply renaming a file took 10-15 seconds. Copy-pasting files took minutes, etc, etc. Everything is super snappy now, thanks!

OK, here's some Powershell code to do this automatically.
    Remove-Item -Path 'HKCU:\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU' -Recurse -Force
    Remove-Item -Path 'HKCU:\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags' -Recurse -Force
    New-Item -Path 'HKCU:\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell' -Force
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKCU:\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell' -Name 'FolderType' -PropertyType String -Value 'NotSpecified'
    Reboot.
Note: This will require a new version of Powershell to function, not the default version that comes with Windows 10/11.

  • @timonsku
    @timonsku 7 месяцев назад +3

I would recommend to only do the last bit. What is slow is Windows "discovering" what type a folder is when it hasn't done that before. Deleting the existing bags just deletes your preferences that you made for a specific folder in the past like the view type, sort order etc.
Retrieving those settings is pretty fast as it just looks up an ID and doesn't have to parse every single file in that folder first before it can determine its type, which is a truly awful feature to have enabled by default.

Why this is not included in indexing? Everything should be loaded in background and stored in windows database. This is what file indexing should be.
The idea is cool, music folder - all music tags etc. But why it's doing it when i open the folder? It's ridiculous. It would be ridiculous in beta build, but it's straight embarrassing in final version.

Couple of very picky things (since you are editing the registry)
    - camelCase does not have capitalized first letter
    - and the font of the text embedded in the video (for what to type) uses ALL CAPS and LOWERCASE CAPS which is VERY confusing. The keys/string data probably won't work in all caps

Sorry for the unrelated question, but you seem to know Windows: my file explorer has recently stopped showing past tags in a dropdown when I'm typing a tag into the metadata field. I used to be able to type com and it would suggest complete, for example. Now it just sits as long as I leave it showing nothing.
Do you have any clue how to fix that? I've done a reinstall of Windows through the update system, which reset all my regedits but it hasn't changed this.

In my brief test, yes, you can! But I only just tested it, I'm not sure if it stays that way, or messes up the fix. You can definitely set up a folder to display differently and save that, you don't necessarily need to use folder types.
