I think Run with the wind needs more recognition and respect, it's an amazing sports anime, one of the best for me. It's grounded, short, has amazing characters and story. More people need to watch Run with the wind.
When they were talking about sports shows without superpowers I immediately thought of this and Haikyuu. For me Haikyuu is still Hype AF, but as an adult I much prefer the University setting and adult characters from run with the wind
So much this. Was about to comment the same thing. I watched it for the first time about a year ago. Playing competitive sports growing up the show nailed the team aspect of toxic and encouraging behavior. Was very surprised i never heard of the show before.
I wouldn't say it was grounded. in that show they took a bunch of amateurs, including a book worn and a heavy smoker and got them into a world class long distance competition with less of a year of training. i still enjoyed it over all though
@afro owl same, I dropped it at ep 4, just as Connor did. It's a lame attempt at survival shounen with no actual stakes. I could care less about them not making the national team, not all of them could've made it anyway due to the limited number of players allowed. The thing with the ego just made me cringe, especially because football is a team game anyway and they have to work together with the other players to win a match. It's why I don't call it a sports anime (neither did its author), it's a cringe battle/survival shounen.

i'm very curious about what Garnt's thoughts would be of Kaguya sama once the movie and season 4 come out. Because what he's saying is that his enjoyment of romance really declined once he entered marriage and honestly Kaguya really became amazing for me once it explored the complexities of actually being in a relationship.
Hopefully he enjoys it. The next arc of Kaguya after the confessiins had me really worried initially that they were gonna pad out the story with an unnecessary twist, but eventually turned into my favorite arc of the entire Manga. The entirety of Kaguya where they actually are in a relationship, is just the best.

I think that the more 'cartoonish-style' (as the boys called it) worked in favor of My hero Academia in the first season. Because it was so over the top that it kind of felt like a parody of western comic books. But this style got toned down as the story got darker and somehow the show never got the tonal shift right. It just feels stuck between a cartoonish comedy (which could work if done right) and these dark stories that get hold back by the inconsistent tone. I feel like Horikoshi (author of MHA) wanted to combine too many things together and it just didn't work as intended. (Btw I'm aware that this comment will most likely get lost and never seen by anybody but I just had to let my opinion out as I was a MHA fan back in it's peak and often think about this topic.)
My gripes is that all that potential gets lost in favor of playing favoritism to bad characters like bakuguo and it's not a hot take to say that since even he apologized for how he wrote him. Until he dies or until deku finally beats him I'm not coming back. My only investment is the my hero comissions I've been paid for and I draw them begrudgingly to an old movie clip that vents my frustration with this franchise

I love it's manga my top 3 of all time but it's anime is not that good it's pacing super slow ,it has recaps and flashback recaps which covers 15 min of episode and animation is also poor from punk hazard to first half of cake island which is like 300 episode
I think what they're trying to explain in the My Hero Academia section is that the story doesn't feel real. It doesn't feel grounded in it's own world. It doesn't sell the audience on the idea that these things are really happening and that those things matter and affect the characters.
I love hearing all their thoughts about mob psycho 100! Sad that joey hasn't caught up to it, so garnt and connor had to hold back a bit. I was kinda sad with Connor's opinion on Mob 3 when he said it didn't feel necessary and it went on for too long, but he saved it at the end by saying Reigen is one of his favorite characters in anime.
I've always said as a rule, a bad show can be saved by great characters, but a good show can't work with bad characters. You can come up with an amazing, 10 out of 10 plot but if your characters are dry it dies.
In regards to romance anime not moving forward, the thing that makes me appreciate Wotakoi so much is that they went "You know what? Fuck it!", and they made the main couple official by the end of fucking episode 1. No "will they won't they" shenanigans. Episode 1 ends with the main characters confessing and agreeing to date and the rest of the story is about them as a couple.
I watched/read it before getting into a relationship and basically twice since. Once near the beginning of our relationship and now a year and a half in. It's so..rewarding. I really wish there was more than 10 volumes. I feel like there's a lot more they coiod explore with it. It doesn't help that we are so spot on that couple. The only difference is that I'm more laid back and open about being a weeb, and he keeps it more under wraps. Like on the weeb side of it it's cathartic in how relatable it is. In the relationship side it's just a reminder to be more considerate of each other and communicate more. Again I think more people would remember it and be more attached if there was some more relationship progression and if it was longer.
Man, I remember when this used to be a podcast about food. I love that you had a section on Golden Boy! So great, and Connor is spot on, bring back the Office Women!

@@SailorSetsuna7 Former MHA reader here (dropped long ago), I agree that the writing in MHA is pretty good, but most of the criticisms they made about the show were valid imho. How the world feels too safe and bright even when bad things happen, the pacing, how most things MHA does right competing shows do better, etc. I hate to say this since I actually really appreciate Horikoshi as a mangaka, but MHA is just turned out to be a really mediocre anime. It's understandable that it fell off.
I mean you don't really go to Connor for nuanced intelligent takes. And I don't say that as an insult, this isn't a series that was ever going to appeal to him. So bad takes are expected. I was more surprised by Garnt saying things that were dark on paper weren't in motion. Without spoiling, I don't see many other shows, anime or otherwise, willing to show a particular breed of violence. Even doing it off screen is often too much for many viewers and MHA had the balls to do it without looking away. The only way that shit doesn't land is because you don't want it to. MHA is far from flawless but boy howdy do people give it an overly hard time. While simultaneously propping up alternatives that are equally flawed, if not worse. Bleach is a quick read because it's mostly vapid content, there isn't much to take in so you can blast right through it. Fun. But not remotely similar outside of genre. You know a series that has no danger to it? One piece. Is it still a great series? Absolutely. I don't mind people not liking MHA, but don't fuckin lie about why. It's ok to not know.
Man mob psycho is an anime where the "Its not the destination its about the journey / friends we made along the way" thing actually shines and matters more than it wrapping up.Shows like that needs to be a slow burner, so the slower paced season 3 made more sense to me . I know they didnt have that much material to begin with but not going the movie route and making the season 3 was artistically a better choice. I understand connor is about the pee pee poo poo gamer brain fast action and prefers things getting done quick but imho mob psycho works better in slow pace. Heck i didnt evem need the action ( even tho the animation IS FUCKING AMAZING ) all i cared about was mobs journey of becoming a person anyone could be proud of . Truly peak fiction masterpiece fr fr .
I hope they enjoyed the journey of discovering a new medium, hope they do more about it in the future! Nice to see Garnt finding the joys of slice of life and everything else.
Concerning Re Zero S3, I think the reason it hasn't been released or announced is that most of the White Fox animators left to do Mushoku Tensei. And S3/Arc 5 contains much more action than the earlier Arcs so they need a good team to do it well. But they have some kind of announcement coming (late March IIRC) so hopefully that will be for a new season. As for never ending, Tappei is currently writing the last parts of Arc 7... of around 11 planned Arcs. So yes it will be a long one.
IMO, the reason season 3 isn't coming out anytime soon is probably because it's primarily a promotion of the source material. And it kinda makes sense that pace is optimal for the purpose both keeping interest of hardcore fans and interesting new audience for years to come. Imagine if they hastily released like 4 or more seasons, but there is no more original source to adapt. It leaves awkward silence for like 3 years until the whole series is finished. There is no reason for most anime-only watchers to read light novel, since they already experienced most of the story, and most will not be bothered to read remaining books, i.e. it is hard to transition from watching animated series to reading it. If you think about this way, it all comes together (at least, in my head).

I personally don't agree with any of the My Hero takes. Gentle was not a filler arc. It was a low stakes arc. The objective of that arc was to make a traumatized child feel good and free her from the mental clutches of the guy who ruined her life. To make Eri smile. Having an Overhaul or Shigaraki style villain wouldn't have worked in that arc because the idea of said arc was to have a wholesome conclusion and make a child smile. Even then Gentle's arc still had moments of darkness because we learn that his attempt to save someone ended with them dying. With everyone telling him that he couldn't be a hero. Which gives him parallels to Deku because everyone, even All Might(at first), told him that he couldn't be a hero and that he should be realistic. Gentle is who Izuku could've been if he'd given up. Just because an arc doesn't have a ton of action at all times doesn't make it filler. In regards to Bakugo, I could understand if you were in early S1 or 2 and thought he might've been a person with questionable morals, but it's made very clear in S3 that he's not going to be a villain and it culminates in him venting to Deku and them becoming proper rivals. He isn't a bad person, much less a bad character. In fact, I find it ironic that Connor loves Endeavor so much but hates Bakugo when they pretty much have the same character arc. Although, Bakugo is on a much lesser scale because Endeavor did way worse than him, but still.
yup, MHA was slow at times but it was never something which made me think "please just complete the story already", but I guess name's trash taste for a reason, personally I think Connor has monkey brain about genres as in good/bad, bluelock is really good, MHA really really good. His complaints about blue lock not being a matter of life and death was huge L, because for atheletes playing for their country is the end goal, it is a matter of life and death, people do dope in olympics just so that can get gold medal even if it cost them a significant portion of their lives. so yeah I enjoy the podcast but I think it's best they dont discuss anime because their takes are not that good frankly but still I enjoy seeing them

@@xitogun101 (manga spoilers) That was kinda the point though. To us and Karasuno is the players that exist in Hinata and Kageyama's first years. They were the most formative years of their highschool career, and ending that part after the first year keeps that true for us. But the series was always going to build up to Kageyama vs Hinata.

It's weird because nowadays I became obsessed with reading manga, literally the opposite of pre-covid where I would actively watch anime at any chance of break I get.
You're going through the natural life cycle of a weeb. At some point in the next couple of years you'll get bored of manga as well and then feel frustrated at having nothing to watch or read while having a "planned" list hundreds of entries long.
Also, the dude pays a lot of attention and knows stuff. He knows the cast and crew, researches about them and acknowledges their work. Not to mention the absolute insane number of anime he has watched.
I have to agree with these anime studios having the weirdest priorities. "Oh they're all too busy that's why every highly anticipated season takes 3 decades and a virgin sacrifice" AND WHOSE FAULT IS THAT??? Like, are the guys in charge being forced to make 32 obscure slice of life Isekai light novel series for the summer season so that they have 1 guy dedicated on animating each one in 28 hour sessions daily? (Except for Kazuma the intern, he gets to animate two series at once because he's ambidextrous!) Like, many animators are already being underpaid and overworked as is, but it's even worse when it's on a 4/10 nothing series that no one asked for and is going to fade into obscurity after selling maybe 1 figure as a joke for seemingly no reason.
I think the weirdest thing I've experienced recently is that I didn't get spoiled on one piece by manga fans. I got spoiled by a Facebook ad for a gacha game.
@Kedwkn it was just some points I didn't get because in other animes it's humanly impossible while in blue lock every move or goal has been done in real life and most of the reasonings of why it's so unserious we get the explanation why the manga would be better for Connor
@kedwkn really. Wow. OK. I actually thought his reasoning was really good but that could because I hate the anime too so maybe my biase is playing into it
I dont know what he said havent watched the podcast yet. But blue lock manga , i fucking love it. Fast pace/amazing art/retarted but fun and hype dialouge characters and plot. Personally its my 2nd fav sport manga after haikyuu. The anime however i could not watch. The retarted but fun dialouge in the manga is extremely cringe in the anime and cmon now animation is mid AF nowhere close to the amazing art of the manga
I want to see an anime like, "Honey, I shrunk the kids." Maybe something about a salon or barbershop. A anime about truck-kun that set up Issei Kai. A anime about a comic con. One about a dentist.
connor just didn't watch enough bluelock, the characters are relevant to the story later on so showing how convicted they are to the point of life and death makes us feel bad for them and feel their struggles rather than introducing some randos into the storythat we don't care if they win or lose
I love Overlord way too much man. It's the only series thus far where the anime captivated me enough to make me read the light novels, wait for new volumes to come out, then re-read the whole series just for the new volume.
Damn damn damn... They started with my favourite Satoshi Kon Film😭😭😭😭😭. The scene transitions in Millennium Actress is what made me hook into it. There is this scene where the main lead is running and the background, outfits, atmosphere, story ... All changes without changing the running. It was soo Epic

I think Run with the wind needs more recognition and respect, it's an amazing sports anime, one of the best for me. It's grounded, short, has amazing characters and story. More people need to watch Run with the wind.

So much this. Was about to comment the same thing. I watched it for the first time about a year ago. Playing competitive sports growing up the show nailed the team aspect of toxic and encouraging behavior. Was very surprised i never heard of the show before.
Yesss, my favorite anime, it really ispired me to run and just improve my life

@afro owl same, I dropped it at ep 4, just as Connor did. It's a lame attempt at survival shounen with no actual stakes. I could care less about them not making the national team, not all of them could've made it anyway due to the limited number of players allowed. The thing with the ego just made me cringe, especially because football is a team game anyway and they have to work together with the other players to win a match. i'm very curious about what Garnt's thoughts would be of Kaguya sama once the movie and season 4 come out.
The entirety of Kaguya where they actually are in a relationship, is just the best.
does kaguya actually get good because tbh I was so bored when I tried to watch it I stopped and just went and did my math homework cause it was more entertaining
@@spookyyy3 Where did you stop? The first half of the first season was definitely up to personal taste if you liked it or not. It only got to the parts I liked near the end of season 1. But season 2 and 3 was where the quality really sky rocketed and it became a romance classic.

I actually think Horikoshi's art is great for the horror vibes especially by the Villain arc

My only investment is the my hero comissions I've been paid for and I draw them begrudgingly to an old movie clip that vents my frustration with this franchise

You feel sad? Imagine how I must feel!

It was such an entertaining and enjoyable and interesting episode.
Next episode: We've read manga!

For real especially recent chapter of JJK, Gege’s definitely cooking
JJK S2 coming in July and the manga is ending this year man

But knowing him and how stubborn he can be...he'll just keep saying the same shit
Garnt and Connor are definitely going to talk about it
@Márcio Amaral I remember joey talking about jjk before the anime even came out in his "what will I be watching in Fall 2020 season" video and he was praising jjk manga and hoping for a good adaptation and he even said if they make the anime adaption right, this will be the next big thing but after jjk being the next big thing, for some reason he started calling ig overrated and mid 🤷♂️ idk some ppl are just weird

Feels like Connor omitted the entire fucking bit that Gentle became a villain because his attempt at rescuing someone resulted in manslaughter and he was shunned by society, so he became a villain because his entire life fell apart due to one simple mistake.
Yeah I swear they just zoned out for that entire arc because despite them calling it a filler that whole arc is pretty vital for both Deku's character development and in part showing how society can screw over people and make them become villains.
@@mikemorro140 Like, I'll agree with them that MHA feels long because I stopped watching it myself after season 4 (though I still check out manga spoilers) and honestly, their opinions on most stuff from seasons 1-4 feel braindead. Like with Gentle for example, he and La Brava basically saved each other, I don't know how much more clear it could be.
And Connor can hate on Bakugo all he wants because Bakugo is a bad person, but he's in no way a bad character. It's just that his development is too subtle to notice when one is not paying attention.
@@mikemorro140 That was actually my favorite battle in the manga...
Doesn't mean that arc wasn't complete shit, I can see why most people think it was filler or did not pay attention.
Honestly I am glad Mob didnt get the movie treatment it had ample time to tie all the loose ends beautifully
I hope they enjoyed the journey of discovering a new medium, hope they do more about it in the future! Nice to see Garnt finding the joys of slice of life and everything else.
Connor says he’s watched anime, I sleep 😴
Joey, The Anime Man who DOESN’T watch anime, says he’s watched anime, IM FRIGGIN AWAKE 😱
If there is anything I've learned about Connor lts that every anime he doesn't like are the ones I need to watch.
@@tns2167 they wouldn't go the lengths of paying for the commercial minutes to add more time each episode. Re:zero's S2 feels like a passion project from white fox.

The sentence before
I personally don't agree with any of the My Hero takes.
His complaints about blue lock not being a matter of life and death was huge L, because for atheletes playing for their country is the end goal, it is a matter of life and death, people do dope in olympics just so that can get gold medal even if it cost them a significant portion of their lives. so yeah I enjoy the podcast but I think it's best they dont discuss anime because their takes are not that good frankly but still I enjoy seeing them
Guess I'm rewatching while waiting for the late news episode
Same
Bocchi is a slice of life show about social anxiety and music. That's like the opposite of what Connor likes.
Haikuu has a good balance of hype and being grounded it gives the main characters a satisfying win but also doesn't let them keep winning the same way they have to adapt and get better and you watch there journey
thank you
It just made me feel down a bit that after finishing the manga, it stuck with hinata as it's original goal and the team stopped being the driving force. I think that's something that made it strong in writing and unique overall but as someone who's watched a lot of sports anime, I felt a bit disconnected. 😔
@@xitogun101 (manga spoilers) That was kinda the point though. Like Kageyama said at the end of the final hs match when they talked about the future highschool years: "I wanted to win with THIS team". To us and Karasuno is the players that exist in Hinata and Kageyama's first years. They were the most formative years of their highschool career, and ending that part after the first year keeps that true for us. But the series was always going to build up to Kageyama vs Hinata.
Come on now. In like episode 3 one of the characters gets a spike and has a slow motion speech about how deep it is that his spike has transcended the wall of hands that appear to block him. There are characters that call themselves shit like “the king”. Haikyu is full of anime bullshit
@@Pearlem I mean its just internal thoughts. Not like they're literally having conversations lmfao. The actual gameplay is very grounded in reality with some occasional minor stuff that isnt bad enough to be unbelievable. Its still a story focused on characters and their development though.
Wow! They actually talked about anime almost the entire episode! I don't think they've ever talked about anime this much. I enjoyed it though. I don't need every episode to be like this, but it was nice. 🙂
In Blue Lock, the MC isn't the shittiest, they literally tell every group that they're the shittiest and it's revealed the MC is towards the top at the end of the first arc
Exactly what I was thinking, he should’ve watch a few more episodes
@@ReD_738 How the boys talk about anime these days reminds me of Garnt's / Gigguk's "Anime fans: the ultimate guidebook" video.
especifically the part of "the anime fans who can catch up with anime through memes only"
who would have thought that would describe connor and joey these days.
That's what they do in every Shonen though. Start out saying the protagonist is a big loser but then surprise! They're actually super OP. It's not a subversion, it's how the trope plays out every time.
Where do they say that Isagi is at the top , Ego just says that he lied about the rankings and that every building is Building 5. Isagi wasn't even near the top in his Building 5
>revealed towards the end of the first arc.
He was complaining that the misdirect fools no one and is therefore unnecessary and dumb. He thinks it would be better if it wasn’t there in the first place. I don’t think you guys were paying attention while watching the episode
For re zero, white fox is kinda facing a crisis, since the employees they have access to just got halved down to about 50. To make matters worse, the next arc that season 3 would cover has a ton of action compared to previous arcs that white fox is not specialized towards.
Summertime rendering is underrated. Must watch who really want suspense & mystery. No cringe and edgy fan service
it's good but it also starts with MC landing in big titties, which then contiunes with a panty shot
No fan service also that lady with hammer exist.
Having read both Kaguya and Rent-a-Girlfriend, Garnt is *beyond help* with that take
What take
Did you watch his anime awards vid? xD. He loves Kaguya sama
Yeah I did. The take here was 'Kaguya Sama is, on paper and as a critic, one of the greatest romance manga and anime ever made... and I'd take Domestic Girlfriend over it any day of the week... I realised the most fun I've had with romance manga in the last two years is probably Rent a Girlfriend'
(Like I'm not being serious, it's just funny when his love for trash comes out haha)
1:37:00 when connor says "I understand Garnt now" under his breath is so funny for some reason, like he has been trying to figure out the annomaliy that is Garnt
Joey's in-depth commentary on anime is exactly what earned him the valid title of anime man.
It's basic
@@balabanasireti It's ok to be basic

Deserving title
(Except for Kazuma the intern, he gets to animate two series at once because he's ambidextrous!)
Like, many animators are already being underpaid and overworked as is, but it's even worse when it's on a 4/10 nothing series that no one asked for and is going to fade into obscurity after selling maybe 1 figure as a joke for seemingly no reason.
I think the weirdest thing I've experienced recently is that I didn't get spoiled on one piece by manga fans. I got spoiled by a Facebook ad for a gacha game.
Joeys opinion on blue lock switched every 2 min lmao 🤣
Connor's really helping them live up to their name with his Blue Lock takes
@Kedwkn it was just some points I didn't get because in other animes it's humanly impossible while in blue lock every move or goal has been done in real life and most of the reasonings of why it's so unserious we get the explanation why the manga would be better for Connor
Such L take. Connor likes mid jojo and cringe shows
If you agree with him, you either a girl or a mod

-connor, a man of culture 2023
Joey watching anime is like remembering a thing you used to do when you were a kid imagining a pen was a spaceship.
connor just didn't watch enough bluelock, the characters are relevant to the story later on so showing how convicted they are to the point of life and death makes us feel bad for them and feel their struggles rather than introducing some randos into the storythat we don't care if they win or lose
I was so hyped when Dreaming Machine was announced as a fan of both Kon and Hirasawa(and his song “Dreaming Machine”). But yeah, it was a tragedy.
