As a Bulgarian I've always found Russian very soft and also intonation is always so calm. So I've argued with foreigners about the aggressive sounding stereotype. I've always thought that one of the reasons for it is that most people would've heard Russian in movies where it is usually spoken by spies, mafia people, assassins and so on :D but let's not get into this other stereotype now.

Have to agree with you on the Hollywood influence here in the states. Most of the actors display strong, hostile accents to sound like an intimidating Russian.
They’re conveying military leaders, spies, and gangsters. It is very misleading.
When I watch my Russian YouRube channels (where they do street interviews abroad), the real world people sound beautiful speaking Russian. Men and women alike.
Curiosity and intrigue for the language was a leading motivator for me to pursue it as a 4th language, and I adore it! 🇷🇺 ❤️

I have been told before my Italian comes out a lot when I am angry or excited and start hand gesturing. Personally, I love the way Russian sounds; that is one of the reasons I am learning it. Russian always sounds very menacing because whenever we hear it on the news, it's always either NATO being threatened, generals being threatened, government ministers being threatened, intelligence heads being threatened, oligarchs being threatened, nuclear armageddon being threatened, etc. It's a different type of scary than German. German is outright aggressive and confrontational whereas Russian has a menacing undertone of "you don't want to find out what happens if your factory can't produce the required artillery shells"

I've been learning russian for +2 years. As for me I think it sounds more soft than harsh. It is so beautiful, so delicate. It sounds like a wonderful music to my ear. It can sound agressive (probably because of some hard consonants), but anyway in this case it is not really the language itself but the person who speaks it who must be angry 😁 I would say that this is the same with any language. As a french, I think my language can sound pretty soft if I am calm, but if I get angry it can turn into an extremely harsh language.
Russian is definitely my favorite language, I am totally in love with its complexity ; both soft and harsh. But the kind of harsh that sounds so pleasant and that make the softer sounds even more delicate. I like to say that it sounds like an intelligent language, with all of this complexity.
Btw- In french, instead of saying "fuck" as "putain" we can turn it into "purée" (=mash potatoes) / or "shit" as "merde" we can turn it into "mercredi" (=wednesday)

I think the modalities is a personal preference. I say 'please' and 'could you' forms a lot in both languages. Maybe even neurotically too much.
And another way of politeness is to ask for something with the negative verb form. Something like 'Will you not pass the salt [please]?' If the tone of asking is polite enough, then please can be omitted. I think it can sound rude in translation.
But generally I thought that we are taught 'always say please' in Russian.
We also have formal You like in many other languages. So it's totally possible to sound very polite, so that even in translation into English it would be fine.

I'm Italian too and yes, Russian sounds always so aggressive. But at the same time it sounds so elegant and noble.

Hello. It's an interesting and beautiful video. I can't say anything about how it sounds, but if anyone speaks that language, I'll know it's Russian . Thank you for this video. See you.

for an italian the most aggressive language is german language. Russian language in general is associated to the language of Ivan Drago in Rocky film... but not so aggressive in my opinion.

Русский язык не кажется агрессивным, на мой взгляд, это сильный мужской язык, на котором говорит сильный человек.💪💪💪😅😅😅🤣🤣🤣

Hi Elina! It's not as aggressive as certain languages in my perspective but it's understanding that Russians are used to their native language and may not feel it when they speak

Elina, I agree 100% with you about the German language 😀. I had thought about adding that language in the prior comment but I wanted to make it sound more abroad

Not if you compare it with Persian, or Lebanese, or Eastern Armenian. I'll tell you though what a very dangerous thing to do is to have a get together with all your Armenian and Persian friends in a small room during dinner. With all the jestering and dramatic talk, you spend most of your time ducking. LOL
