I so wish YG marketed them more internationally. Their music is so good and healing to me, and I know they're sure popular in Korea already but I know theyd do great internationally. (And Suhyun is really good at English!)
I love how playful and innocent their music is (especially the lyricism) but they also have great melancholic songs with strong messages. I don’t really hear them do a lot ad libbing tbh, it definitely would’ve been interesting~
The thing about Suhyun is that, in kpop, especially in the big 4, you ain't debuting if you dont have at least some technique in vocals but Suhyun has that thing of being a natural that I think it's not the standard in the industry. I think that she and IU might be the best vocals on the pop side of Korea.
Who Talks About Ramyun(Ramen) in a song? the 1st song was about that! HAHA. This Sibling duo is So Famous and Respected in South Korea because of their Amazing Songwriting Talent and Originality And when you Dive into Chanhyuks Lyrics. He tells alot, in a wierd way. The ability to be QUIRKY in some songs and pull a heart string on the Others. AKMU is a Gem to me! They are on My Playlist coz its soothing to Listen.. with No Over the Top, extented Runs and In your Face Vocal acrobats (which I also like when Im driving hehe. I love music) Even if they are not Your Jam. You atleast tried. Its always important to keep an Open Mind coz you are Crossing DIFFERENT CULTURE. Not Everything Kpop is Western Sounding. And I will be Happy If Akmu will Never adjust to Fit your Box. Authenticity is very Important and they Should always do Them.
I don’t need them to fit any box at all, I just expected more musicality and some different sounds that weren’t acoustic guitar based and that’s not exclusive to western music.
@@tommyo2450 I'm pretty sure she is part of the process even if she isn't proactively writing and composing. Those two have been working together since they were young and are basically a team 🤷🏽♂️
@@mimichandes yes, I know all about them! My faves . Of course she has input but as she has said herself he is the creator of basically all their music which he writes with her voice in mind.. During recordings etc they of course collaborate. Her voice is literally one of the best there is, her personality is tops too.. They are perfect together..
13:14 personally I believe its more about the sentimentality of the song ( one needs to go into the lyrics and meaning of the song) and showcasing something even slightly fancier can possibly be a detraction.. in any case this song hit the charts, and won awards (heck most of the songs in their albums are chart toppers) and maintained for a long time showcasing how talented the brother is in writing and composing the song and the both of them for carrying it very well
I'm pretty sure AKMU. (Akdong Musicians) originally always introduced themselves as an acoustic music duo. (At least on kpop star and Chanhyuk always had am acoustic guitar and they did acoustic covers of other songs.) They've definitely branched out over the years but the acoustic guitar has always been a big part of their sound..
I get what you're trying to say but they are not an RnB Pop duo or anything close to that. Some of my most favorite songs of them are the really calm and "clean" sounds, both fun upbeat and slow emotional songs. Just comforting and soothing fresh. I agree AKMU's songs are considered basic/boring-core compared to typical KPOP songs, but to be fair, they were never intended to be like those KPOP groups.
yaaasss finally my love lee babies on this lovely channel ❤❤ akmu are perrrfect the way they are. for me!!! they're my comfort group and i love every single song they have!!! no skips no problem.
It's also wild you've never listened to any of their songs (and to answer your questions about being siblings in a group......they obviously love each other but they bicker CONSTANTLY. It's like their thing to go on variety shows and just fight with each other). So yeah, they were on this competition show where the main 3 companies basically fought to sign contestants and they were by far the best so when they went with YG, they were given a LOT of freedoms in their contract that regular idols would never get (they write and produce their own songs, they don't have to be on any diet restriction or be forced to get plastic surgery)
I was so sad they didnt do melted. Melted is my favorite song from them followed by 200% to be honest (that final bridge part in 200% when soohyun goes into her falsetto bag after "see u tomorrow~" so nice).
Since their competition days AKMU have really developed their unique sound, very crisp, refreshing and absolutely if anyone wants to know them more, pls focus on their rhythms and lyrics, their lyrics are so amazing if you know Korean or can get a good translation of it, I feel like because their lyrics are so much built into the DNA of their songs, it’s really impossible to get to know the personality and swagger of them as a group without lyrics. also the topics they write about are very diversified and not only about relationships and love. They are such a breathe of fresh air. Would recommend anyone to check them out properly if interested in more.
as an r&b girlie i def understand what you mean about those surprise harmonies we're used to. i actually thought you would like nakka a little 19:06 lol i do love akmu's music a lot though, it's very calming and healing in a way!
i always love your reactions/vocal analysis videos (especially the killing voices)!! I really hope you can react to sungkyu's killing voice as well (one of the main vocalists from infinite and you probably know him as the judge from peak time). i see that you react to certain killing voices that don't have many reactions to and i really appreciate that since i love hearing your perspective/opinion about the music/vocals. watching your videos have made me realize certain small details that i wouldn't have noticed on my own. def looking forward to your future reactions :)
Yeah, I think AKMU is definitely not for you. I listened to snippets at the end cause I wanted to understand what you meant. Well, I didn't like. Like at all. All examples. I really think it's a pass for you. Ofcource, there is solo album of Chanhyuk. But as whole I don't think they are for you. As side from their vibes and singing, I think the most value of their songs are lyrics anyway. So, you can't feel the music if you don't know korean or at least know translation. So, I don't even see necessity for you to check their other songs actually. Anyway, thanks for your reaction!
Agree with you that this live performance was a bit safe. But I think AKMU actually showcases a good example of two topics I like to bring up 1. The kpop that travels well to the West, provides something unique or a spectacle that you can't get from your own country. But, you still need music for different occasions (comforting, touching, funny, etc) and hence, the different things that work locally. Example you used, in a way, you don't really need AKMU because you have Chloe x Halle 2. I'm generalizing a bit, but I think the "default" voice texture & music melodies that touches the soul is a bit different for Western & East Asian audiences. For example, in Korea, a few of the leading female voices that demonstrate this are IU, Taeyeon & Suhyun here from AKMU. Whereas, a Western audience may prefer a different voice for "feelings". I am East Asian with a Western education, but the East Asian thing tugs at my heart a bit more readily. And, I specifically use East Asian here because the same tradition seems to stretch from China to Vietnam. Which is why the Korean OSTs and ballads and IUs export a bit better in those countries
@@user-mr5yw7mx4g I appreciate the effort you spent posting that, so let me reply sincerely. The soulful singers are still there. They are just not top of the charts. Korean music listeners are actually getting the best of both worlds. The global pop idols & the local artists at the same time. You now have room for both because the money in the industry helps keep everyone afloat. This is the kind of thing you only appreciate after its gone. Example: Hong Kong

I really like AKMU style from the very 1st time i watched their audition on kpop star. They are so unique especially their playfullness on lyrics and note and its refreshing. I was not into bg/gg back than so CNBlue and AKMU were my faves since 2010 and 2013 until i found EXO on 2020. Eventho i stan EXO (bg) i still couldn't enjoy other bg/gg vibes of musics but CNBlue and AKMU still my top 2 and 3 kpop group i really like. Wait.. i've just realized.. so EXO is boygroup, CNBlue is band, and AKMU is duo... wow.. its almost complete 😍. If i want to add soloist than my fave is D.O., Chen (i litterally like all of Chen n D.O. songs whatever genre it is). And once more.. Suhyun (the female) is my top 1 favourite woman singer in korea.. for me her voice is so beautiful. Begin again program proved it.
They have a pretty interesting back story "Lee Chan-hyuk and Lee Su-hyun lived with their missionary parents in Mongolia for almost five years before returning to South Korea to pursue a career in the music industry.[7][8] While in Mongolia, they were home-schooled by their mother. The siblings, under the name Akdong Musician, joined their first label, the Proteurment agency and soon performed on several stages and even released an original song titled "Galaxy", which later was used as a soundtrack for a Samsung Galaxy S4 film commercial in May 2013" Wikipedia They were not professionally trained. Most of their songs were cutesy as they were very young and innocent when released. They were on hiatus as a group when Lee Chanhyuk preformed his military service. Suhyun got a lot of preforming experience on the TV Series Begin Again, Korea, which was an awesome some featuring many top acts preforming live to small audiences in Europe then in Korea during COVID. Suhyun has a multiple of duets with Lee So-ra (Episode 1-5) Hareem Henry Lee Su-hyun (AKMU) Jukjae Crush (Episode 1-3, 8-10) Jung Seung-hwan Lee Hi (Episode 4-6, 10)[10] Sohyang (Episode 6-10)[12] to name a few. You can find most of these on youtube
To my understanding he writes most of the songs, if not all, and not only that, he also produces and arranges them, that's why they are so famous they were on a show (like American Idol) and they won and I think one of the reasons was that most of the songs they presented were originals. That's when YG signed them.. Chan is super respected for being a good composer/songwriter and suhyun for being an amaizin vocalist I think regarding the harmonizations, Chan has said several times that he writes and composes his music thinking about his sister's voice, many times the songs end up being almost solos for her, maybe that's why they don't play much with harminzation, he's thinking more about how SHE would sing it, He even wrote her solo debut. They are more on the pop and folk side, I dont think I hear then sing R&B or maybe very little PD: my english grammar is not the best 😅
Akmu prefers to stay in his safe zone and I really like that, but I understand your point I hope you react to Lee Suhyun, I love her covers of Top of the world, Saving all my love and Lucky, is very good :))))
I love you! love any reaction videos you have but it was very painful to watched and listened to you singing and trying to show us examples on how the songs can be better. That aside, the examples you showed us at the end, will never matched AKMU style and musics and songs so yes, i’m glad they didn’t do any of them. Their beauty is the quirkness of their songs lyrics and their vocals together, always amazed me. The songs they created to me, are just perfect for them and I enjoyed them very much. I believe AKMU songs are not for you to enjoy as once you have an expectation of someone, it’s hard for you to enjoy their songs as it is. Yes I know you know they are good singers and they have good vocal but at the same time, you are so focused in expecting certain tones from them, that you not enjoying the session/artists as it is which is such a waste. Till next reaction, thanks for reacting.

Sorry about all the negativity you’re getting. Like damn, people can have different preferences lmao!!! One of my favorite songs by AKMU is Every Little Thing off their Spring album, which admittedly may not be up your alley, but does have some more of those interesting harmonies and fun vocal choices you were looking for. Could be worth a listen!! I enjoyed the reaction, and it’s always refreshing to hear your honest thoughts!! 💛💛💛
the lack variety in harmonies you are talking about are definitely done at the second and last chorus of most of their songs. it looks like they are singing the first choruses of their songs. you should give their discography a listen!
i kinda disagree about the harmony you wanted in How Can i love the heartache when I love you......going a flat 7 or suspended 5th like you wanted doesn't match the lyrics or meaning of the song. Obviously you have things that you want and like but they spend a LOT of time of where and what they want the song to be (it's not like they can't do it) but honestly, not even looking up the lyrics or meaning of the songs and what certain intervals do to that meaning and wanting what you want is slightly offensive honestly (especially on a first listen of a snipet of each song). You know I'm not a hater.....just at the very least listen to the entire songs first
BUT....if you want to hear crunchy harmonies.....honestly, listen to the song that made them famous when they were on Kpop Star 2 "Don't Cross Your Legs" (unfortunately they vowed they would never perform that song ever again since they played/performed it so much)
It’s a killing voice reaction. I’m going to take it as it is without knowing the full context of the songs because that’s the dingo format. You worded as though I searched for their songs and only listened to snippets? Why would I treat them differently than any other killing voice I’ve reacted to that has managed to convey their message without added context? Slightly offensive? I thought you knew me better than that Ed.
@Koko3op no no, ypu misunderstood me....not saying you're picking and choosing. Just that the format of an instant reaction to killing voice can be misleading for the reactor (which is unfortunate, bc so many people discover artists through this series since it comes in a nice package of highlights). The reality, MANY songs featured on killing voice are so much more complex than the snippets they present (and often times sound WAY different) so it's always a little disheartening for someone to make a wholesale opinion just based these small snippets

HAHA. This Sibling duo is So Famous and Respected in South Korea because of their Amazing Songwriting Talent and Originality
And when you Dive into Chanhyuks Lyrics. I love music)
Even if they are not Your Jam.
I love them so much! They sound so go, they have such chill music i can just put on and feel like the main character, and they’re so weird and great
Suhyun sounds like a disney princess. Chanhyuk does a lot of the producing but they compose and write together I think.
It's 99.9 9 him in writing, composing producing..
I agree AKMU's songs are considered basic/boring-core compared to typical KPOP songs, but to be fair, they were never intended to be like those KPOP groups.
yaaasss finally my love lee babies on this lovely channel ❤❤
akmu are perrrfect the way they are. for me!!! they're my comfort group and i love every single song they have!!! no skips no problem.
Yep you should check their b side. Their discography is insanely good~
They do write their own songs💯🔥
AKMU is Akdong Musicians which is translated as Mischievous Musicians that is why most of their songs they played with their rhythms as such
as an r&b girlie i def understand what you mean about those surprise harmonies we're used to. i actually thought you would like nakka a little 19:06 lol
i do love akmu's music a lot though, it's very calming and healing in a way!
y'all dk, i fking love akmu so much thanks for this review, we dont really see as much akmu content anymore T^T
i wish they sang melted as well 😔
chanhyuk is 26 and suhyun is 24 actually
i always love your reactions/vocal analysis videos (especially the killing voices)!!
Thank you so much!!
But I think AKMU actually showcases a good example of two topics I like to bring up
1. The kpop that travels well to the West, provides something unique or a spectacle that you can't get from your own country. But, you still need music for different occasions (comforting, touching, funny, etc) and hence, the different things that work locally. Example you used, in a way, you don't really need AKMU because you have Chloe x Halle

@@user-mr5yw7mx4g I would argue that what you are presenting is a global problem. Take away the idol industry from Korea (let's say it goes to China), and it won't bring back the good days that you are missing. you should check out Sea of Hope, Suhyun (the sister) sang a couple of songs there with Rosé and Onew ("If I ain't got you" and "Lucky"), its just pure raw nice vocals to enjoy :)
He writes all the songs with the guitar, that's why it's there, usually he plays it too but it's hard to do that live while singing like that, but lee suhyun is my favorite singer
Oh my they didn't do melted and Re-bye :") I wish they did!
You may like the music videos and vocals for Re Bye and How People Move. I think those songs showcase her vocal capabilities well.
Suhyun has a multiple of duets with Lee So-ra (Episode 1-5)
Hareem
Henry
Lee Su-hyun (AKMU)
Jukjae
Crush (Episode 1-3, 8-10)
Jung Seung-hwan
Lee Hi (Episode 4-6, 10)[10]
Sohyang (Episode 6-10)[12] to name a few. You can find most of these on youtube
You should check out the group “Highlight” killing voice.
I already tried ages ago and couldn’t finish it unfortunately
Yeah, their music is probably not for you. You don't have to force yourself to listen to anymore of their content.
The older brother also won an outstanding individual award in 2014
To my understanding he writes most of the songs, if not all, and not only that, he also produces and arranges them, that's why they are so famous they were on a show (like American Idol) and they won and I think one of the reasons was that most of the songs they presented were originals.
They are more on the pop and folk side, I dont think I hear then sing R&B or maybe very little
PD: my english grammar is not the best 😅
Akmu prefers to stay in his safe zone and I really like that, but I understand your point
I hope you react to Lee Suhyun, I love her covers of Top of the world, Saving all my love and Lucky, is very good :))))
I love you! love any reaction videos you have but it was very painful to watched and listened to you singing and trying to show us examples on how the songs can be better.
If the songs were a little less safe I wouldn’t have thought of what I wanted to hear however they were so I was explaining what I didn’t like what I would’ve liked, as I always do.
I’m totally cool never reacting to them again!

You should check out melted by them it wasnt in this and is probably my favorite by them the emotion I felt before I even know what any of the words meant was amazing 🎉
I would love if you could check out AKMU Melted - one of my favourite songs and music videos from them.
Haha no worries it happens. Thank you!
the lack variety in harmonies you are talking about are definitely done at the second and last chorus of most of their songs. it looks like they are singing the first choruses of their songs. you should give their discography a listen!
Ty for reacting to Akmu. Hv u watched Sohyang on Lee Mujin Services?
i kinda disagree about the harmony you wanted in How Can i love the heartache when I love you......going a flat 7 or suspended 5th like you wanted doesn't match the lyrics or meaning of the song.
THEY DIDNT SING RE-BYE WHAT
Have you tried reacting to P-POP? (or Philippine Pop, like K-Pop but Phil. version) You might want to react to this group called SB19 if you haven't yet. Suggested song would be "Gento" and "What"
