This is why my favorite version of Eminem is 90's - 2009 cuz Relapse is a Classic, 2009 in general imo was the last year when he went full "i don't give a fuck" mode with Slim Shady plus his flow at the time in addition to the Horrorcore material in his raps when he would bend the words with his accent is just masterclass. I still like current Eminem for the technical ability but 90's, Early 2000's and 2009 Eras of Eminem just hits different compared to now cuz he used to ride the beat so smoothly with his flow back then and the off the wall shit he used to say was insane

The two key differences are that back in the day Em changed the tone of his voice way more than he does now. He almost used his voice like an instrument. Think of "When I was just a little baby girl my mama used to tell me these crazy things" from Kill you and how his voice follows the melody of the song. Current Em doesn't really adjust his tone anymore. He still switches up the flow (probably even more than in the past) but he keeps the sound of his voice the same all the time.
The second thing that changed is that Em used to let his voice "ring" so to speak. Think of how you can let a tone go on when playing the piano or you can press the paddle that mutes it to stop it from ringing. Em used to let his voice ring and naturally flow from one word into the next. Current Em muffles / mutes every word which gives it that chopped feeling (which can sound nice in certain scnearios, but I feel like it's all he does these days).
I still love Em and his new style has many dope aspects about it as well, but I do agree that his older stuff simply sounded better.

The drugs too! You can hear Em's voice mature on The Eminem Show. The nasal accent went away, partial on tracks like Superman, Sing for the Moment however I feel like most of the time he was aggressive with his approach. I personally think MMLP has his best vocal tone and is the hardest/darkest record he has to date.

  • @scurvyelephant333

The difference (aside from more obvious factors) is that this was the taunted and abused animal fresh off the chain. He went from feeling completely powerless and unacceptable everywhere in his life - from home to school (and school to school), no sense of safety or consistency, nothing and no one to depend on, which is what a child needs most - to finding one place where he had some power and control. It’s like a beast that’s been chained and taunted and barely fed for years being set free.
The first half of his career was basically. “Look at me. I am the captain now!” Lol
But once having that way out, and that way to let out all of that rage, it had to diffuse at some point. And thank God for that.
All that said, I think he’s equally if not even more brilliant today. He’s a different kind of different. But a lot of people got attached to that early version, and it’s hard to watch people change that you’re attached to. But it’s important for artists to grow.
And let’s be honest, nobody wants to see 50yo Em with the overalls and chainsaw. Lol. That’s not a good look, y’all!
I know you mean the rap vs. the look, but you know what I’m saying. There’s supposed to be a difference between 20 and 50.
    And he ain’t done yet.

Back then he was just mad at the world, had a tough upbringing, bad marriage and had been recently broke af, the farther away that is the less of that anger he has so its less genuine when he's tryna be that today.

You’re absolutely right Scru. There was a balance between it being sonically pleasing and technically outfuckingrageous, combined with insane imagery and jokes with performance and adlib within the studio tracks that made you feel like he’s right there in like your friend’s basement with you or something clowning around telling jokes or stories or shit. He’d hypnotize you with the syllables, had an easier, less strenuous delivery (even when it was an angry track) so as to not break the spell that made it seem like his talent was effortless and then he’d just lock into the flow relentlessly. The formula was exceptional plus he was on the come up so the approach, style, subject matter and content was all fresh.

Between his normal rapping voice (here) or his aggression (till I collapse, way I am), he had a swag to his voice. He enunciated words differently. Probly because where he came from and who he was around. Now, he just sounds like a….white boy. He just talks now. You get a glimpse of old em once in a while at certain points of songs, but it doesn’t last. Like the ringer is a good example. You could hear old em wanting to come out

When I hear "Why doesn't he just do this today, This is why we fell in love with Eminem"......... I don't think people realize that when Eminem OVERDOSED, Brought back to life, & kept in a medically induced Coma for 10+ days he actually had to Re-Learn how to Rap because he actually didn't know how anymore, & you can listen to the leaked track called "DETROIT PISTONS" you will hear how he sounded before he relearned to Rap again........ Also I truly believe he looks at the style that blew I'm him up & he knows he hit the greatest skill using that style & if he can't improve that style he is bored with it, So he begins down another path where he fell in love with BUILDING A VERSE & USING SYLLABLES LIKE THEY ARE LEGO & He has seen that that style has a unlimited levels using that & it is truly what is Fun & a test for him so he actually loves & enjoys using that style because it is an actual task for him ...... I'm sure he can do the old style but its just something that doesn't entertain him & it really bores him because its like playing MADDEN on ROOKIE even though your actual Skill Level is ALL-MADDEN , So if you play on Rookie & you just Smoke the computer every time it does become very boring because at that level there is nothing else to learn at all & you go into the game already knowing you are gonna score 80pts because you are not getting challenged on that level

It’s the anger, hate, recklessness, and the drugs. He’s done extensive therapy and rehab so he’s not the same person as he was back then. You could feel it back then. Now it’s all technical which is better for him. But back then it was all personal and emotional. You felt what he felt.

I would have to say at that time rap was like that(99-2000) and the fact em had to shine brighter to be seen. Was ground breaking. The rap scene at that time was shiny suits and the real rap was underground. He had bars that made you listen and comprehend not just hear it. Also there were plenty of artists that he was contending with. Iron sharpens iron

2:05 "There was something that was here, but i dont know" Ill tell y9ou what it was... his FLOW! his iconic, cant be touched FLOW. This Em not only had the craziest lyricism, word play, bars, but he had the perfect flow to go with it. Something he doesnt do anymore, he just decided to stop flowing with the song. htats why when he came out with The Death of Slim Shady he showed us he can still do it, just chooses not to for some insane reason.
In other words, he could ride any beat better than any living human ever.
I agree that was the greatest run EVER! During that run you knew any damn song he was on he killed, when he was featured everyone knew he would go last, and would always kill every beat, he would steal other artists songs and make it his beecause of how badly he murdered it. Like Jay Zs Renegade is actually Eminem Ft Jay Z - Renegade... the way he killed it.

Your problem is you're comparing modern EM to old EM. it's like what Hov said: "go listen to my old albums then"

I think he changed his flow and everything in the middle of his 3rd album Eminem Show. He started with the Triumph the puppet Dog, and brought that accent to the 2nd half of Eminem Show, and all of Encore. His Relapse and Refill albums went back to that 2nd album crazy Em

The thing you're talking about is just a vibe that you can't describe. I think it's just the " I just don't give a fuck" vibe that he embodied back then. Which is why a lot of people were drawn to him.

Em in his prime was straight up fire. I"m not a big fan of the choppy flow he has now. Almost like he's so worried about playing with syllabels and words, but back then he sounded relaxed and you'r right, he didn't give a eff. I'm not sure what it is either.

His flows and bars are much more simplistic and less technical but it allows for more creativity and relatability. He comes across like a computer now and while yes it’s amazing to break down it just doesn’t measure up

Something that is not in Eminem raps nowadays, is the unhinged anger, the total wrath he wants to unleash for the unfairness he felt, he is less irritated now, and ofc has less energy to unleash his anger. Get him angry? Then you get Slim Shady, the peak rap immortality.
