There is just something unquantifiably majestic, powerful, and breathtaking seeing a gigantic iron monster flexing her muscles at greater than freeway speeds.
The diesel is for the Head End Power to supply the passenger cars in tow. The steamer is actually the one truly pulling the train. She's actually mechanically sound!
Seeing old steam locomotives running is really the most majestic sight that you could ever see. Its even better when your in person, then you can really feel the whistle!
The diesel is required by rail road regulations as 1) electrical power to the power to passenger cars, 2) in the event of mechanical failure of the steam engine it can be used to move the train to a safe location. If you run these boilers at a lowered pressure, that means lowered temps. Cold running the boiler is not healthy and is very costly to reverse the damage done by doing so. Just listening to her pull out of the station you can hear her doing all the work.
Even as a little kid, I've often wondered what it would be like to see a rail line travel down the middle of a high way system, even more so to see a steam locomotive do it. Imagine my surprise to find out that's exactly what good old 3751 has been up to!
24 Jan 2107. Robert Shaw you've nailed it. For the younger generation who never had the experience of s steam locomotive troop train or watched a steam locomotive pull Ringling Brothers and and Barnum's Bailey's circus train pull into the yard at 0500 in the morning to commence unloading. I was lucky my parents would let me at about age 9 take the MKT from Tulsa to Bartlesville, OK , by myself. Wow! What a treat!! I had several memorable steam locomotive cab train rides in S. Korea in 1946 and maybe I will write about them someday. Thanks, Roberte! john
Its a real treat to see this old girl still running. Everyone enjoys it, i mean come on, even the helicopter was following it! There's just something romantic about steam engines. Its like they're alive. Long live steam!
Loved this, bought back memories. Also I visited USA a couple of years ago, and was amazed at seeing the train track down the middle of the highway. Seeing this would have really made my day
Thanks for all the effort to capture some great angles during this excursion. The 3751 is a beautifully restored Baldwin and a real treat to see on the mainline. Kudos to all involved.
I just think that's an awesome thing to have a railroad running down the median of an interstate highway. You don't see this kind of setup just anywhere.
Union Pacific has the old MKT branch line between Tulsa and Muskogee, OK which runs right down the middle of the Broken Arrow Expressway/Hwy. 51 in Tulsa for several miles.
Sweet Video. Gotta love these old locos. I just rented the Pere Marquette 1225 and will be selling tickets. I have her for the whole day,March 15th 2014.
I enjoyed every second of this superb capture. Congratulations for this excellent work. I felt myself seating at your side, feeling the magic noise of this iron speedy monster.
I really bet that the whole "Holy crap, is that a steam locomotive in the middle of the highway!?!" made many drivers double take. I would have freaked out! Loved it!
john holt canadian texas. i got to ride this train about 10 years ago it was going back to california from the east end of its run. got on at canadian texas went to amarillo texas. was great bought 2 ho model box cars. i am a ho train person . I have a ho layout. have a ho model of this train. IT is one of my best trains. Was so glad to see this video . that you all for doing this. I LIKED IT VERY MUCH JOHN
Beautifully composed steam video. Kind regards from Swindon, home of the former Great Western Railway of Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the UK. Many thanks for your trouble.
Enough with all the 80 mph trains. We want to see one of those 120+ mph streamlined Hudsons. Time to restore that Chicago & Northwestern E4 4-6-4 that Dallas has sitting in that museum. We want an American locomotive that flies like the Brit's Mallard & Germany's 005 02. Now where's that dynamometer car we'll need?
***** That's what we need to find out. All the rumors of the Milwaukee Road F7s high speeds are just that...until they aren't. Engine specs favor the F7 over the 005 in power, but the 005 had 90" drivers, the F7, 84. So, pulling a trainful would be on the side of the F7. All the F7's have rode into history; but the E4's are virtually identical, and there's one remaining, in a museum, collecting dust. There are plenty of people out there that have so much money that restoring that engine wouldn't touch even 1% of their fortune....and a bunch of them made their fortunes ON THE RAILROADS! So it would be a nice gesture for one of them to finance this project. Don't you think so?
These were the trains that helped establish the massive cities of today. They might not be bullet fast, but they went fast enough, no brakes, all manifest destiny with every huff and puff. The royal iron horse.
uhhhhhh-huh-huh.. a fireman named "Wood"... Must be quite the thrill to see her in such beautiful condition and to run again. Good for you. If I didn't live all the way on the east coast , I'd pick you up and treat you for a visit and tour.
thanks, I'm glad you like it. it took me two days to put that video together. although that's probably because I ended up shooting about one hour of footage, so I split it into two part's.
Thanks for the info! I feel like a fool. I read the wrong information on their Facebook page and missed a great opportunity to catch the 3751. I live right by the San Gabriel Sub and was out and about doing other things thinking the locomotive was no where near town.
When steamers first move out, water is cleared out by blowing it directly out of the exhaust ports. After they are clear & sufficiently hot, the steam is rerouted into the smokebox. During this time, the draft is increased by use of the blower, hence the smooth flow of smoke out of the stack.
The diesel is for electric power to the Amtrak cars. This is only half it’s speed! They are known to cruise at 90 mph no problem all day. Nothing modern can match this beauty
+mchume65 No, just people who don't want steam locomotive videos in the suggestion column. That's the quickest way to avoid stuff you don't want to watch any more of.
It was Santa Fe 3751 ready to depart for the ready tracks, to take passengers to Culdee Fell Mountain Railway near Killdane Station. They had to keep watch themselves as quiet as they could.
Air brakes and onboard electrical power are dervived from a smaller engine attached to the side of the locomotive, responsible for the high pitched whine often heard in videos of these engines. The steam you see is from the petcocks. When the engine has stood still for a while, the cylinders cool off and condense some of the incoming steam. If water from this is allowed to build up, it could cause the engine to throw a rod or knock a head off. Having the petcocks open lets it drain out.
Consider some of the greatest sound humans can hear. A 747 winding up the engines and taking off. A Saturn 5 rocket leaving the pad and a steam locomotive racing starting up. What is it about the Chu-Chu-Chu of those things that make people so profoundly affected. Power. The sight of such a huge thing even moving.. But the sound - that incredible sound of steam blasting up the stack. Almost better than sex.
Also they are there to take over if the steam engine has any issues preventing her from moving with her own power. It also provides electricity for the cars.
I would be very distracted if I was driving on the highway. What a beautiful sight. I can remember as a small child watching REAL time steam locomotives pulling freight and passengers in the U P of Michigan. This was absolutely stunning. How do i get info on how to get a ride with one of these steamer excursions?
If you watch the movements of the drivers you can see that the steam exhausts just as the rods change direction. While sitting at a station the cylinders cool off and get condensation in the cylinder. The condensate is blown off by leaving a valve open. Not doing so would have the piston hit a wall of liquid at the end of the stroke and BOOM split open cylinder and a nonfunctional engine on the spot. In the country side they probably haven't stopped long enough for the cylinders to cool off.
Have a 484 Northern in my hometown (Wichita Kansas) unfortunately not roadworthy. Sits on the overpass overlooking downtowns main east west street. Owned by formerly by AT&SF (Atchison/Topeka/Santa Fe)(Now BNSF). Originator of the Henry House Restaurant/Hotel chain. 5 Star Restaurants at the hotels and onboard the trains. Chicago to Los Angeles. To be fair there is a deisal engine there so I'm guessing the steam engine isn't doing all the work.
actually, the diesel is just for breakdowns.
Yep, Santa Fe 3751 runs all by herself, and can reach speeds up to 103 mph, or a little under 166 kph.
lol, imagine getting overtaken by a steam train. Its both a sad yet majestic moment!
The diesel is for the Head End Power to supply the passenger cars in tow. The steamer is actually the one truly pulling the train. She's actually mechanically sound!

I know this girl well, in 1945 I became a Fireman on her, 1946 I became an Engineer on her for 6 months. Glad to see her operational again :-)
Happy for you mister Wood!
L.D. Wood wow! How old were you back then?

The bell on the locomotive is ringing. That sounds great
I like watching the trains in the USA

You might know my coworker Earl Slaughter, who ran steam in South Korea.
Its a real treat to see this old girl still running. Everyone enjoys it, i mean come on, even the helicopter was following it! There's just something romantic about steam engines. Its like they're alive. Long live steam!
Notched up and running as sweet as can be. American engineering at its best. Thanks for posting.

is it me or is 3751 the most beautiful steam locomotive ever made she looks amazing!
That honor belongs to either SP 4449 or N&W 611.

That honor belongs to SP&S 700.
probably one of the most beautiful steam locos ive seen

Beautiful work for such a beautiful locomotive. Thanks for posting.
That's very cool!!! I have such an interest in these old engines. I could listen to your stories for hours.

Union Pacific has the old MKT branch line between Tulsa and Muskogee, OK which runs right down the middle of the Broken Arrow Expressway/Hwy. 51 in Tulsa for several miles.
The railroad was there first, they built the highway around it cause it was too important I guess
Great Video Jeffery. Love the light on 3751 when shes going down the 10 Freeway!!

No coordination needed, basically a dead weight. Diesel locomotive is being used to supply power, lights, electrical and air conditioning.
Diesel loco is only attached for backup not for electricity supply
@@sweetspotttmbehindthewheel2004 yes it sis for electricity supply and also backup
The diesel is used for the dynamic braking it has the steam loco still has traditional braking
I swear I can smell loco smoke and steam in my living room! :)
one of the best quality videos (not content) I have seen on you tube...strictly high class camera work
I really like the font of the "SANTA FE 3751" on the tender
