Alex; The short story about the 300 SL, told in just :54 seconds, sprinkled with brief comments, of which the one about the first generation stands out, for its precise definition: “… was Obviously Pornography On Wheels” (Me myself went speechless in fact, when I standed next to one first generation SL, IN 1970!), added adequate music, superb takes & views, made me a subscriber, now to XCAR. Thank You.
Thank you XCAR, thank you for reviewing cars, exploring their lineage, showing their purpose and making them shine as they were intended by the manufacturer. And thank you for not comparing them to every other mark in the class. Thank you for making a review without even mentioning any other car manufacturer or model. You do reviews like someone who really loves cars. Like someone who loves his car to bits! Great work, keep it up!!
I think most people process subconsciously the ridiculous and ugly front logo. It makes this car look like a toy asian car, where sticking your brand in the face of everybody is important for brand recognition, mainly for the bleak design of the said models. Compare S class limousine where such atrocity is absent and an elegant grill is in place and the S class coupe where the logo spoils it completely. Now try using photoshop or even ms paint on a picture of the SL and remove this nonsense from the grill. Tell me whether it looks better.
I love what the SL has become. With the introduction of the GT, it doesn't need to be cut back and light and all the toys fit just fine. Having said that, I had the SL500 and recently upgraded to an AMG GT which is definitely a better car, but I still miss the luxury of the SL. I'd never trade back again, but picking up another SL as a second car (maybe the 350 this time) is definitely on the cards when prices come down a bit more.
I agree with you Alex, except for one point, you see, the car's weight by today's standards isn't too bad, considering cars lighter have, Superlight or are meant for the racetrack, so i believe the car still fits the SL title.
I suppose, while the SL has evolved to become more of a GT cruiser, the SLS in many ways takes the place of the old 300 SL. How about that as a comparison for you guys: SLS vs. original 300 SL? :)
I feel that it looks very powerful and muscular but yet a bit dull, don't take me wrong, its stunning in real life (with the roof up). I have seen the AMG version of it and i dont think that its as aggressive as other AMG's, but I dont think its made for the young boy racer who wants an aggressive car, but more for the 65 year old grandpa who want to go on long road trips in comfort with enough power to pass a truck on the motorway ;)
Could you try the Jaguar XF (pre-facelift) with the 3.0 diesel (not the S)? because it was a important car to the brand and demonstrated the move forward in executive cars
This SL has 3 problems: 1st - It's fugly (boy, is it fugly) 2nd - The SLK. Looks better, it's not that bloated, drives better and you still get a hardtop and a nice interior 3rd - The SLS. Before the SLS people bought the SL because they could say 'hey neighbor, look at me! I just bought the latest, biggest, most expensive sports coupe from Mercedes! Yeah, I make that much money.' That market is totally dead for the SL.
i don´t get the point with the SL. If you want to have a luxurious cruiser, go for a Bentley (the top range SL costs about the same) If you want an open top sportscar, go for a R8, 911 or something else.
I know this probably isn't the place, but i was wondering if XCAR had any jobs? I'm 18 and an absolute car fanatic! Any response would be great, thanks.
i keep looking at this sl350 and to me it looks like the body panels doesn't fit the body frame that good, there is just something about it that just doesn't flow, it looks bulky and im the kind of guy who likes it tight :D......... just my opinion tho
Well, while this car isn't light it's quite a lot lifgter han the R230 (it's predessocor) which was nudging 2 tonnes at well over 1900 kgs. It however isn't as pretty as the old car was though especially the pre facelift R230
I have just read on The Truth About Cars a column which featured the SL350's wheels; the base version's looks atrocious and I usually don't care about wheels' appearances. How much was that option in your tester? The fourth gen SL is one of the best 90s designs, this side of the E39 M5. As for this car, why would you choose it over a higher end SLK, 335i, or S5 cabrio? Other SL owners will scoof at you, and it's sluggish.
I don't really like the direction Mercedes has been going with their styling. While the rear ends look great, the fronts seem to be getting more and more ungainly. They jut out too much, and the headlights on that SL look like they've just been slapped on at a wonky angle.
I would like to help you to get more views on these great, great videos ! But I don't have any ideas that how can I help you to get more views.. Can you give me an idea?
1. Beauty is subjective to each person. For me its gorgeous for you its ugly. Your opinion is not equal to 7 billion people. 2. Look no1 3. The SLS is completely different category of cars than SL. People who buy an SL could afford SLS I guess but SL is a more relaxed car. Not all rich people want a super fast car, SLS is a super car, SL was maybe a super car in the 70s, after that it wasnt considered super car. So I guess you are totally wrong.
Don’t expect sporty from an AMG? Where has this journalist been for the last 30 years? Doesn’t know what he is talking about and thinks his brain is calibrated to immediately when an engine is struggling, even though this car has been designed and engineered by some of the best people in the industry 😀😀😂
Wonderful channel...The production is first rate, the music perfect and Alex is just plain excellent...Continued success! By the way, nice car!!!

I don't see why everyone believes that this car is ugly, I personally believe that it oozes class and looks prestigious without being abnoxious.

I've seen one on a road not long ago and it looks more prestigious than a Conti GT or a Rolls (which I see on a daily basis).
@@sepuko The large logo is true to the brand. It is just rendered in a way that makes the star less likely to be stolen.
This might not be Top Gear or Fifth Gear... but that's still no bad thing.
Love what you guys are doing, keep it up!

I miss this presenter and love this car.
Great review. Makes a nice change from some of the other mundane videos on here. Keep up the good work Alex
Don't know if anyone has said this yet, but maybe SL can now stand for "Smooth Luxury" instead of "Sporty Light".
amazing car. Love it!
If you get a chance, go for the 500 SL. V8's 4,7 liters, 435 Hp with a K&N Airfilter will give it almost 450Hp, that is just awesome!
A KN did not give you 15hp, or any hp for that matter
Lovely presentation !
Great presentation guys!
The New SL class converted to become an old people luxuries sport car. & The original SL target market have been acquired by the SLS
This is such an epic channel :)

You said it mate!
That over run sounds like an angry Thor is living inside the engine :D
Best video yet!
XCar your work is top notch, this is the first clip I have one issue with. Why didn't you show the magic changey roof?
There is one, is quite a beast.
what is the name of the song in the background?
I like you are well suited for the occasion!
Klasse Arbeit. Ein gutes Video zu diesem Thema.
OMG is that New Forest Nature Park? I've been there last week when I was in England for vacation :D
Could you try the Jaguar XF (pre-facelift) with the 3.0 diesel (not the S)? because it was a important car to the brand and demonstrated the move forward in executive cars

Nice video. I just love your comment on vehicles. Love to see you review the e63s.
It’s weird the first sl’s and jags e type we’re awesome looking , but current cars are not nearly so beautiful.. why ?
Excellent stuff Alex :-)
awesome review!!!
Great video as always :)
it is being made already
the mercedes-benz sls amg is the maching model with the 300 SL, not the new sl...
IMO, the 350 sounds very good.
R129 is my favourite SL
Thanks again, very good show. And the way you say "leicht" sounds very German.
i don´t get the point with the SL. If you want to have a luxurious cruiser, go for a Bentley (the top range SL costs about the same)

agree.
once again... good job u
I know this probably isn't the place, but i was wondering if XCAR had any jobs? I'm 18 and an absolute car fanatic! Any response would be great, thanks.
Launch your own TV show. I am sure you will be as successful as Top Gear UK.
i keep looking at this sl350 and to me it looks like the body panels doesn't fit the body frame that good, there is just something about it that just doesn't flow, it looks bulky and im the kind of guy who likes it tight :D......... just my opinion tho
The design makes it feel "inexpensive"
Well, while this car isn't light it's quite a lot lifgter han the R230 (it's predessocor) which was nudging 2 tonnes at well over 1900 kgs. It however isn't as pretty as the old car was though especially the pre facelift R230
will there be a SL65 AMG in this generation?
now, sl=smooth and luxury
Great car :)
Not too sure with the back lights.
whats the name of the starting song? plz
Nothing wrong with this car except that front headlamp, looks out of proportion. Too "bubbly" and cute.
SLK is also a comfortable cruiser not a scrappy little sports car 😅

I'd rather have the old car.. It has more style and clas.
Button your jacket damnit!
Topgear= too funny...
Fifth gear= too focused & hardcore...
XCAR=perfect......
The V6 shouldn't even be fitted into this car.. It doesn't suit it's character. This car should come with the bi-turbo V8 as standard!
It looks quite better than the SLS... but I still don't like that kind of style :p
...or maybe they aren't!
they need new tailights. i like the SLK better.
That's too much power, it would interfere with the SLS. A V6 is just fine.
Why on earth would somebody take this over an xk?
I would like to help you to get more views on these great, great videos ! But I don't have any ideas that how can I help you to get more views.. Can you give me an idea?

Only the smaller engines are worth buying
Leave out the music
They killed the SL with cr@p reliability and styling that just got worse with time. And let's not romanticize, the SL's of old were wallowing pigs.
350?!? that doesnt even come to america
Top gear is too childish
Fifth gear is too boring
XCAR is just about right. Mmm now I feel like porridge.
An SL with a wimpy V6? Heck no!
Most of it looks fine but the front its as if a manga cartoonist drew the face of a cute dog on the front - big eyes, silly mouth etc .
This ain't no gullwing
V6 SL? Go home Mercedes you're drunk!!
The back of the car looks like a Hyundai...
6th gen looks really poor, from the side looks like it was designed by 3 different people, and the headlights are ugly, the rear is plain.
The lights on this car are srsly horrid to look at!
Spunk
Awful external lines !
It doesn't look good !
Don’t expect sporty from an AMG? Where has this journalist been for the last 30 years? Sorry, XCAR, genetic determinism is bad science.
i swear it already looks dated. Mercedes models don't age well apart from vintage ones
its ugly
***** its an old mans car!
buy a sls/amg GT for junger people :)
Overpriced garbage
That you dont own and most likley never will
ADS W that's ad hominem you idiot
such an ugly car...
Looks very cheap, looks very feminine.
