The argument that because it’s legal it’s not fascist was shocking, like… literally all the fascists manipulated legal processes to take over and then when they had the power made the worst shit legal.

It absolutely is. They’re making laws about what you can and can’t do. Saw the b.s. propaganda pic of Trump signing a law surrounded by children who all looked female. I think there was something about using women’s bathrooms and I think they’re going against trans teachers too. They really don’t want to believe it’s their relatives and fellow church members (they trust blindly) who are molesting and grooming their kids. Oh I was watching Josh Jordan a comedian (he’s also a daily show correspondent) but he tells it like it is in his comedy. He was taking about the House Speaker saying Trump signed or
said something about “sex defined at the moment of conception” and the people around the speaker all clapped and looked so happy. But then Josh said “Yeah so i guess there won’t be any men!” and that’s exactly right. But none of those conservatives have had sex education or reproduction and I really hope nobody tells them! Josh writes an entire new set for every city which is crazy, and uploads 40 minutes free on Tuesday 9pm and has them all on his YT channel which is just his name. He doesn’t talk about Pop Tarts and woke = bad like Seinfeld. I’m Canadian and wished I could have voted so bad. I’m so sorry.

EVERYTHING they have done thus far is reversible, FOR NOW, but it won't be if everyone doesn't get out there and do what they can. Keep in mind everything he is doing is literally illegal and executive orders are very weak. Trump did the same thing last time, a bunch of crazy, hair-on-fire executive orders because he wants to be a dictator, only for basically all of them to be undone by Biden. This pretty much always happens every time we flip flop between a Dem president and Rep president. The problem is if America doesn't wake tf up, we will not have another chance at a Dem president...

I first saw the daily show when Trevor Noah had newly taken over. I had never seen Jon Stewart hosting, but everyone kept talking about how great he was. Trevor seemed to always be in his shadow, ppl even said that if Jon was still there, Trump wouldve lost the election.
Then, he returned and I was excited for the first monologue. I'd finally get why he was such an icon.
And that very first thing monologue had a joke making fun of the lady who sued McDonalds over scolding hot coffee.
Y'know, the women who got hospitalized with severe burns and then made a joke by a big corp. That woman had already died when he said the joke, due to long-term complications from her burns.
I thought about if Jon maybe didn't know, but he has a writers room. John Oliver had talked about the case extensively. How big was the chance that NONE of the writers knew? That no one told him.
I tried to picture Trevor Noah telling that same joke and just couldnt.
It was such a simple thing, but it was undeniably punching down.
And I realized Jon Stewart doesnt do his homework. He's beloved for his delivery, he's nonchalant because he doesn't care, so he can seem brave and cool while calling out congress. He can do it because he doesn't care. I wish he cared.

Jon Stewart does care and if you don't believe that, go watch the video where he is fighting for congress to fund the 9/11 first responders bill, or look at why he left his Apple+ deal. I think he knows that part of his job is to help people through struggle via comedy and sometimes you fail to think through the whole joke. I didn't see that clip so will go back to find it now, if you have it please link it. I can't imagine his delivery being deadpan or without layers or irony indicating the inverse of his expression. Could be wrong and if so, I will complain at him about it. My perception is that he trying to calm everyone for a second to figure out what to focus on and how to accomplish anything when we have limited power, because the executive has too much without enough checks as a structural issue. The dichotomy of this is expressed in the fact that Trump hasn't been too successful so far (judges blocking orders) and that yes the threat is already here but if we call everything fascism, then its hard to separate definitive times when truly fascist acts vs. threats do happen. The reality is that they have been put in a place of power, for many reasons some direct (voters) and indirect (including non-voters, disagree with the video take) so we need to be strategic and deliberate in the ways we plan to subvert the new status quo.

I have a friend who keeps telling me that Hit ler supported working people - and I have to remind her that he didn’t mean a word of it, it was to get support of the working class - because look what he did to unions when he finally got to power. He didn’t even try to co-opt them. Just got rid of them. He had no use for them except to toil in the factories and feed his war machine. (Adam Tooze wrote a great book - Wages of Destruction - that basically uses the German budgets and expenditures to show that war was always H’s goal, and his anti-semitism was a huge driver for everything he did.)

Jon Stewart was a Comedy Central right-ish libertarian before 9/11, not a liberal. It was the Iraq War, Patriot Act, and other Bush Admin policies that he opposed; because they were things he cared about. And because of his 9/11 trauma, he made a strong stand to support first responders; yet won’t do that to support liberal policies or politicians. He thinks he’s better than Democratic politicians and judges them from above without making an effort to push for better nominees.
I was watching him nightly before 9/11, but even at his best he was bad at confronting Republican politicians/pundits who went on his show because he naturally defers to power in person. That’s why he’s most famous for insulting wimpy Bowtied Tucker Carlson; not a politician. And once Obama became president he lost the plot because he’s a libertarian and thought his job was to always go after the president; even if he’s nitpicking little things to seem unbiased while Republicans were still the main problem.
That’s when I stopped watching because his now moderate libertarian views turned him into a Both Sides Centrist who thinks his job is to be a calm elder statesman like the imaginary Walter Cronkite people believe existed; even though some of the worst problems we’re dealing with began back when Cronkite was telling everyone “that’s the way it is.”

Btw, this trajectory also explains Bill Maher, except Maher is much dumber, less funny, and more libertarian. But they started as Comedy Central libertarians, who were largely influenced by George Carlin.
But Carlin was a leftish libertarian who knew where the line was and targeted specific things like religion and bigotry; not everyone he disagreed with. He specifically called out bigoted jokes as punching down; a concept his rightwing fans say doesn’t exist. His clones thought it was about cynicism towards power and routinely take shots at the wrong side because they can’t tell the difference.
They’re like someone playing a shooter game who doesn’t realize they’re on a team and shooting their own guys half the time. And when their teammates complain, they get offended and shoot them again.

@@jfairway1By libertarian I’m referring to people who put liberty ahead of authority, not the Libertarian Party; which is made up of shy authoritarians who all want to be benevolent dictators. And there are leftwing and rightwing libertarians who both support liberty but in different ways.
Leftwing ideology is about society and people working together. I’m a leftwing libertarian because I think everyone deserves equal freedom, which requires things like a basic safety net, free access to good lawyers, clean water and air, good education, etc. And it’s about balancing the needs of each individual with the needs of all individuals. And what separates me from leftwing authoritarians is that I oppose censorship, mandates, and other policies that force others to be good since it only makes people mad. I believe the government should use carrots as incentives, not sticks to punish.
But rightwing ideology is based on selfishness so rightwing libertarians only care about their freedom; not everyone’s freedom. Like how they aren’t anti-gay but they won’t actively defend gay rights unless they’re gay. And they aren’t anti-abortion but they won’t actively defend abortion unless they need one. And they aren’t anti-drug but they won’t demand legalization unless they use drugs. Bill Maher is the perfect example of this. He doesn’t support Republicans but he attacks lefties more for being too woke.
Before 9/11 Jon Stewart was a Comedy Central libertarian or South Park libertarian; depending on your preferred term. These people dislike authoritarians on both sides, like how South Park mocked the religious right and cops, as well as political correctness and virtue signaling by the left. After 9/11, most libertarians joined the left by opposing Bush’s authoritarian policies and wars, which made people incorrectly assume they were lefties.
If you think Jon Stewart talks truth to power that is consistent with him being a libertarian because libertarians reject authority. But if you see all the times he focuses on both sides or is just calling out lefties for going too far, that’s his South Park libertarian views showing. I agree with him that many lefties use too much hyperbole but I know it’s not a problem I should focus on. It’s like lecturing your kid about his bad attitude while your house is burning down around you.
And I saw countless interviews of him in the Bush years and he was always friendly to all his guests, including frauds like John McCain and dangerous people like Bill O’Reilly. That’s not because he agrees with them. It’s just his personality to be polite to people in person; which is great for interviews but terrible when he’s talking to dangerous people who need to be called out.
Kurt Vonnegut once wrote about a robot with bad breath that dropped napalm on innocent foreigners and he just needed to fix his breath to be accepted by others; because they cared more about his breath than the atrocities he was committing. These are the people who get jobs on TV because they’re all working for billionaires. Jon Stewart helped us get through tough times after 9/11, but he’s now just another wealthy talking head who thinks his job is to calm everybody down while another round of napalm is being loaded into the planes to drop on us.
I mean, I agree that Jon is the best pundit in corporate media. That’s because they’re all terrible. You need to show that Jon has routinely pushed for liberal policies like universal healthcare and campaigned to help good lefties win Democratic primaries; not that he only pushes back against the worst policies. And anyone who targets the left has lost the plot. I’m actually a moderate liberal but I know better than to target my own side.
And yeah, I probably wrote too much.

she somehow simultaneously believed that the words were clipped out of context and intentionally misframed to sound bad, but also, he was right, we should all stop overreacting and not call it fascism.
and just moments before, she'd been talking about how scary all the overt fascism was....
jesus, i don't get celebrity culture. to love someone you've never met so much that you can change your beliefs on a dime because they said something, no matter how many other people there are, saying it's wrong/harmful.
(i'm not saying you have to listen to every online backlash, but ignoring valid complaints and defaulting to cognitive dissonance because you love any celebrity is unhealthy. and you don't have to stop liking somone who has a bad take, but don't get butthurt because other people don't want to let it slide.)

6:45 THIS. This is the problem. Stewart is a liberal because it works _for him._ He worked and became rich and celebrated. He eats well, lives well and gets all the best the US has to offer. As far as he's concerned, the US is the land of milk and honey and the _only_ issues that exist are the ones he gets brought to him and he listens to.

That was a great break down of the issue at hand.
I'm 68 and early on I learned about WW2, Hitler and the Nazis.
As I got older I took the time to try and understand how Fascism took hold in those European Democracies.
What I learned is playing out once again right in front of us, except it is now a Global movement.
Some of my friends who follow politics see it to and are doing what we can to warn others who'll listen.
Don't sell yourself short, your Video is an essential part of a resistance and a rejection of the rise of 21st Century Fascism.
    Thank you

I'm having a hard time deciding if so many people who were disgusted throughout Trump's first term are suddenly defending him are just giving up hope and trying to convince themselves it's ok, or if that's who they've always been and now that it's looking like we're in it for the long haul, they feel comfortable being themselves.

I haven't been able to watch a Daily Show hosted by Jon since he invited Bill O'Reilly on. I was honestly flabbergasted at the decision, and I would find it hard to believe that he got zero pushback on that within his team.
Him harping on Harris' "vibes" rather than policy also made me want to tear my hair out. For better or worse, elections are won on "vibes," and he ought to know that by now.
I was happy to see him come back, but I've just been sorely disappointed by him time after time. I honestly prefer any other host to him now.

3:01 This speech from Stewart has been a non-starter for me since I watched it, but this part in particular is something that's sat with me. Why is he, or anyone else even remotely attached to the American left at this point, still worried about credibility?
The high road has been a one-lane road now for about twenty years, and the American right doesn't give the tiniest deuce the moral character of any of their representatives. I would rather not engage in the sports-teaming of American politics, but I don't want to be rounded up and jailed for no good reason even more. I'm less worried about credibility right now than I am someone telling the party currently in power to sit the hell down and shut the hell up. Screw off, Stewart, you missed on this dart.

    • @ausiidnd
      @ausiidnd 3 дня назад +1

Like it or not, the leftist base still cares a great deal about the moral character of their representatives, lol. There's a reason Bernie consistently gets more support from leftists than any other member of the Democratic establishment.
Plus, Stewart's comment about how everything Trump has done so far has been something America voted for electorally is entirely true. Trump is pushing the boundaries of executive power, as he has a right to attempt as president, and it's the responsibility of those affected in the rest of America to push back and establish firm boundaries on what lines he can't cross. Even now, within days of Trump's executive orders, *many* organizations and leaders are attempting to hold him accountable and enforce those boundaries, and we should support those efforts. To argue that almost every action Trump has taken so far has been "fascism" (as this video claims) rather than the American government working as intended betrays a misunderstanding of civics. Trump is not the worst president America has ever had, nor the most racist, nor the most authoritarian. Keep fighting.

I'm not an academic, but I knew what project 2025 says, and sounded the alarm. What I'm seeing is 1930s Germany here in the land of the free-ish and the home of a few of us who are brave. I'm leaning into surviving and being a helper. My ancestors went through chattel slavery. It is fucking fascism. The KKK marched an😂 hour an a half away from here in Lexington. It is fascism. It's past time to be real. I don't care what a comedian says.
