This is wild! I heard someone say that it takes about 2500 words to become fluent in any language. This is clearly not true for all languages. I started learning Italian exactly 3 months ago and my word count is probably around 800 words.Yet, I feel like I know so little, If I try to watch a film (with captions) or read a short stories book I have in Italian I'm constantly looking up words. Now that I know all this my goal will be to get to B2 level proficiency and then learn another language. It seems to me like anything above B2 is unnecessary for non professional purposes. Learning a new language surely is a big mountain to climb. Thanks for this information!

You're welcome and thank you for the feedback. Also notice that in this video we are talking about number of *unique* words. So Italian, for example, has many conjugations for each unique verb.
Italian has an impressive total of 260.000 words, and about 20.000 verbs. Let’s just assume that the proportion of verbs - 8 percent - is also true for the 4000 most frequently used words in Italian. That means that you will need to learn 320 verbs (to think, to breath, to walk, etc.).
But you need also to know how to conjugate each of these verbs in at least the present tense, two past forms and the simple future, for each 6 persons (I, you, he/she, we, you pl. and they). 6 times 4 = 21 conjugations minimum.
(At the B2 level you will need to know even more tenses/moods.)
In other words, those 320 verbs come in 6.720 conjugated variations for the 4 most basic tenses. Luckily there are conjugations rules to be learned to help you along the way. :)
I agree: Anything above B2 is unnecessary for non professional purposes. At the B2 level you will be able to communicate freely on most 'normal' everyday topics. Good luck on your language journey! :)

@@BecomeAPolyglot . Hi! I agree with you and understand the concept of duplicate words. I primarily use Busuu to learn Italian and I assume (hope) they aren't duplicating words when they provide the number of words I learned so far. But I also use other supplemental material to learn more vocabulary. I watch Italian vocabulary videos on youtube, I read a book with short stories for beginners (I will read an intermediate and advanced books when I progress) and I have a vocabulary book with 2200+ phrases.
The data you provided is very impressive. I like how you figured out the approximate total word count needed to become fluent in Italian and proportional number of verbs needed. The verb conjugation count is seriously impressive especially when you consider many verbs are irregular.
Overall, I feel like I should put heavy emphasis on grammar because once I understand the rules of the languages its much easier to learn and use new vocabulary. Thanks for the reply and the insightful information! Cheers!
