The ”Paparudă” is an old Romanian tradition, founded in Medieval Wallachia and Moldavia. It was sung during times of drain, kids wearing a skirt of leaves and wearing traditional folk customes, caroling their village with this song. The hosts would soak their feet during their singing. This was sung to bring rain during times of drain, and it is still practiced in isolated regions of South and Eastern Romania.
Nostalgie. Îmi amintesc cum în sat fetele cântau acest cântec, iar noi, băieții, zâmbeam, râdeam, ocazional cântam și noi. Îmi place cântecul ăsta....😊❤
It is highly unlikely that this tradition appeared in Medieval times. This is a tribal pre-Christian tradition. It is likely more than 2000 years old, and possibly in one form or another even older.
A lot of our modern traditions are way older than the medieval era. A lot of christmas traditions that romanians have like going with ursu' or capra, are thought to be from dacian times, something done in the winter solstice, and they were just adapted after we got christianized to be performed at christmas. At least this is the only logical explanation.
