You're a bad Mofo my brother!!! Excellent tutorial. Straight to the point, clear cut directions, and the tying the phone to the mount was genius. I've wasted my time watching countless vids and nothing as perfect as this. Thanks my friend, you sir are the best!!!
Yes! That is the best way! Both hardware and software. Don't forget that magnetic north is at a declination. For my example, it's 13° west of true north. Phone apps compensate this when finding the real North Pole. I used that for years, and it works pretty good! Thanks, RJ
The way how the cross hair app works is the left and right side of the cross hair is azimuth and the top to bottom crosshair is your altitude angle. This is your latitude position on earth. The longitude or azimuth angle is for positioning horizontally, The Telescope. But you should do this with the scope on the tripod. One other thing, one of the 3 legs is always facing north with the RA shaft facing north. Hope this helps for everyone here! Thanks, RJ 😊
Mahesh..I thoroughly enjoyed your presentation..Slow and clear and STEP BY STEP...I wrote down almost every word you spoke during your presentation..including "Boom it's Done"Cell Mahesh...I've had the "Polar Scope Alignment Pro" on my Cell Phone, but never took the time to find instruction on its use...Thank you for instruction on this App..Plus...Your direction on setting up the Polar Alignment is especially important for me since I live in cloudy Florida and cannot see Polaris until the winter time...I will use this presentation often..Thank you... p.s. You never did show how to turn on the scope or the cell phone...(:

I agree that the one leg should "point away" from North. However, most quality mounts have the azimuth stops facing NORTH for azimuth control (Right where tripod leg is) so that you don't have much choice and cant have a leg facing "south". Thanks!
I have a question I have the same exact mount do you have the hexium 130 telescope and if you do when you point at stars do you the star or the secondary mirror I see the mirror

excelent! One question please: I just bought a new skywatcher120/1000 rig with equatorial neq5 and I'm still learning the equatorial (before it had a 70mm with altaz mount. Once I managed to put it in parking position (orient the tripod to the north with a quality compass, level the tripod , level right ascension and level declination and adjust latitude of Madrid), can I consider that I am aligned with the polar? even if it is fake alignment? I guess now i can point to the moon or planet, and i should be able to follow it only with RA movement? because sometimes you want to see the moon during the day or because there is something that does not allow you to see the polar. And Would you know how many degrees you have to deviate to true north , since the compass will indicate magnetic north?
Good tips...This would be great for setting up Solar Imaging! just not sure how I'm going to attach my phone to my oddly shaped Skywatcher HEQ5 Mount. Would have to 3D print some type of mounting gizmo. (update: just noticed that iphone will magnetically stick to the top of the counterweights. done!)

I'm at 3 degrees north in lagos and this is frustrating because my mount is made in such a way that the leg is under the weight!
So turn it
