Growing up in Marshfield myself, I remember the term became popular in the 70's because of all the "Vegas Nights" some of the organizations in town held on a regular basis. It seemed that at least every weekend someone would be running a Vegas night.
YOU ARE ALL WRONG. Marshvegas was named by the great Vegasite himself in the early 1970's. He painted the name on the exit sign from the highway one night for all to see. I grew up in town and he was a childhood friend of mine. We both still line in town,
I grew up in Marshfield, and the way I remember it is that sometime in the late 70s early 80s Marshfield banned video games from restaurants and the town saying that it would encourage kids to steal quarters from their parents to play - they considered pacman "Gambling" and from what I recall that was when the term Marshvegas surfaced among the school kids.
I live in Marshfield now, and my boyfriend said that he was told it is called MarshVegas because of all the liquor stores here...that doesn't make any sense to me, but I guess we do have quite a few liquor stores...
However it came about, this is the first time I heard it and I grew up in Marshfield. It wasn't a term used in the 50s, 60s, or earlier. They also use the term Rockvegas for Rockland, I think it is just a dumb turn of phrase used by dumb people.
I love Marshfield and keep it that way it is !!!!

Marshvegas was a term started in the early 70s by Beaver White who used to hang out around the Brant Rock Sea wall and lived on Plymouth Ave.
