I shopped Bullock’s at both San Diego’s Mission Valley mall and La Mesa’s Grossmont Center. I loved them. They carried a great selection of handbags (I still have a beaded evening bag I purchased there) as well as quality costume jewelry. As my career progressed, I also bought my Ellen Tracy and Anne Klein suits there. Salespeople were very helpful.
I watched the West Covina location being demolished for several hours after work one day-it had already been closed and vacant for some time at that point. They were already gutting the inside previously-all you could see was the escalators remaining, but I happened to be done early with work the day they were sending the wrecking ball into it. Very sad to see it go, some good memories of it. Very loud and you could feel when debris would hit the ground-now it's a Best Buy in the exact same footprint. Talk about a downgrade.
Their store designs were beautiful. I am glad to see that the Art Deco Landmark on Wilshire is still standing,..it has become the Southwest Law School. Palm Springs also had a beautiful store design (since bulldozed by Macy's & Westfield)
I’ve heard of Bullock’s from their Wilshire Blvd location, and history, and recently discovered that they had a chain of stores.Fascinating history of this store!.Wish they had some on the East Coast. Thanks Eric!.😎
I only shopped Bullock's on one occasion. I bought a pull over sweater because I always loved their sweaters. Bullock's was otherwise out of my price range, but I loved it nonetheless and still to this day miss it, along with the venerable Broadway, May Company and Buffum's. I miss all the competition we once had with all the department stores.
I work for bullocks in 1992
Bullocks was the jewel of the retailing crown of Southern California. Each time you entered a Bullocks location, you knew you were somewhere special.
