That burning tingling sensation is called a "stinger"... Common in pro football. It happens when a disc comes very close to, or even taps the spinal cord. I was a professional road cyclist for 15 years and I was in a 20 guy pile up at 45 miles per hour once and hit a chain link fence head first. Same thing happen to me. It's no joke, and Nathan is lucky to not be paralyzed! #legend... Hey Mitchel, Bob White says hello!
I live with this pain in the background- car accidents- none of them my fault- have 5 herniated discs- some days my face is numb just from sitting- nausea etc- all I can do now is swim in calm water- even minor waves hitting me or flinging my arms in any way will reverberate the area and inflame it. The last person who hit me has no real insurance. Yeah. Ah
@@peacepantherproductions I'm so sorry. I don't know your age, but let's keep our fingers crossed that stem cell research keeps on keepin on. I think that's gonna be the first real fix for injuries like this.
yikes I had that sensation after a heavy n bad winter day in nJrz surfing SeaBright...buddies wanted to go back out at over head BayHead and I was like nah my middle of my back in my spine is still kinda hot. I already have a natural history of chiari and a 6mm bulge/bubble/cyst/syrinx on my L3/L4 perineal/sciatic nerve roots. makes for a hot leg n hip issues that’s for sure...yoga and anti inflammatory diet
I had a stinger after slamming head first into inches of water after bailing on an overhead barrel that sucked out on take off. Knocked out my two front teeth and took a few weeks to feel 100%. Six months later I hit the bottom again and I was paralyzed from the neck down. I also had an underwater out of body experience. I was flown out by helicopter with a body temp of 90*. Surfing NY in December. Surfings given so much to me though that even if I knew this would happen I’d do it all over again. I had to learn how to walk again and do everything but I fully recovered after a few years and actually went on to earn a 2nd Dan Black Belt from a heavy duty martial arts schools. It’s good to be lucky, shout out to my buddy Saul who pulled off a difficult rescue and spends his time roaming the North Shore..!!
Something like 30 years ago my friends and I would regularly watch 4’9” Nathan paddle out in 2 ft Riviera with intensity and nerves. Now he does Teahupo'o as if it’s a water park, then returns to the beach to build family sand castles. He’s wired the opposite of normal.
Fuck that's a great interview, Nathan Fletcher is such an honest dude. My heart is racing, my stomach churning and my spine is hot and tingling...I played a lot of Rugby League in Australia and that sensation is referred to as a 'burner' the first time it happens is a huge wig-out! to be under a slab of water at the same time?? FAAAARRK
🌕🌎🐸 You survived with Angelic intervention. I am a retired big wave rider from the late 60s through the late 80s surfing breaks in Hawaii we named, like crack 14 on Kauai , places that Joey Cabell named like Canons Kauai and energy bombs on Molokai . When we face those moments that we face death and surrender and for some of us fortunate ones something happens that defies reality. I believe it has something to do with fatherhood, it is something about our protecting our children and those yet to be born.there is a linage and angels protect our children in ways as they can through nature. I don’t remember Nathan mentioning God, or his Sons Name Christ. I will watch this again to see though I feel he did have that prayer in him during those moments. A few times I surrendered in similar situation. Once I had a drag over rocks ,locked to my board , and after the first smash I found myself awaking on the beach with receded water , a loss of time , a few cuts and a destroyed board. I reached out to Christ to be saved, I try to show my thanks to the higher power, I ask for the Armor of Christ and I embodied some of that power and protection. Nathan this experience is part of your spiritual path and your children are of special love. You are another king of the sea , wear your crown, respect our creator and his creation , know his son personally and understand Gods WiFi , he is always there and we need to be tuned in.🤙
"Bring my chick"?! Dude its the 21st Century! I see not much has changed since I left the surf industry 25 years ago 😂 Awesome footage you lucky bastard.

'cos my balls ain't big enough and my time has also passed... respect !! 🙏🙏

Dude these are the best, gnarliest stories ever! Great interview and perspectives. Tales that 99% of people will never experience or hear about
Love the gekko walking across the wall in the background right after he speaks of his epiphany at the end of the video.

So sick!!!🔥 Glad you survived that monster Nathan!🙌🏼😎
The Fletcher's are living legends!
No, they are a Bunch of rich surf punks who do crazy stuff! Jeez man stop being such a jock sniffer and do something with your life!
They sure are.
Herbie is an OG too.
Nathan has cheated death a few times I'm happy that he's still here
I feel hungover just looking at this dude
lol...
He checked to see if his head was still connected 😂☠️
That is just insane. Gotta be the heaviest wave I’ve ever seen. Don’t know how he survived but what a rush🤙 “would I do it again? No” 😂😂
By far, my favorite surfer, Nathan is Nathan
That shot at 4:20 made me want to smoke a bowl.. so in the right spot for foamball cushion.. sort of. Hell ride.
That's the way a real humble man speaks. Got to love it

Great story telling ! Amazing guy
NICE! that is a BADASS ride! congrats!!
This is how I look at every zoom meeting for work. I just get out of bed and go fuck it.
As a Short fat guy. That was awesome man. Swamped the whaler, gotta love it.
What a legend. He tried to reset the line after a flying wheelie in the crazies wave ever.
Sounds about right.
"Would I do it again? No!" hahahaha
Aloha from Maui guys!! Great bit ♥️🤙🏽
That wave is insane!!
I LOVE NATHAN !
Beautiful waves
Love his brother
Guts and glory nice solid core.
Why didn't you guys just do the interview in person? You're in the same town.
Not sure if you've heard but there's something nasty going around.
Super good video
Respect.

@sokin jon to be a great surfer you've got to be able to take the rough with the smooth.
Insane.
Very Cool!
Jamie Mitchell looks like a crazed Will Ferrell.
Is this Nathan guy high?
Extraordinary response when talking about surviving.Im alive I'm alive.lol.legend.
Mind-blown
Would I do that again? No. .... Smart guy.
Sick!!!!!
Tru goonie moment at the end
Ride of the year? Caption should say Surfer almost rides huge wave, but wave had other plans!
Sooooo barreled🤙
Dammmmiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit
funny how most pro surfers spend half their time in the water yet the other half of the time they look like they've never taken a shower.

Please boycott Red Bull until they hand over the murderer to face Thai justice. Thank you.
That takes insane balls but that’s about it. Not sure there’s much skill in getting towed in and smashed.
Impressive... But So sad seeing surfing turn into a self centred circus .. it's become over 4 decades
You need a hobby if you're worrying about how self centered a pro athlete is becoming
not worthy of a ride a year
Absolutely was I wanna see ur lazy ass out there getting slammed by that wave
