There are two 4x4 trails at De Wildt - the yellow & the red trail. We were advised at the outset that the red trail should only be attempted with two or more rigs. Be on the look out to see if we heeded this advice.
De Wildt’s gatekeeper is Bobbejaan Se Kierie. It’s a steep uphill climb with deep ruts. This warmed the Jeep up with plenty of cross-axle flex.
In this series we will showcase in detail the 4x4 trail. We hope this will be informative for other adventure seekers hoping to tackle the trail either on their own or in a group.
We had just overcome the trail’s gatekeeper, when we were welcomed by a sign which read “EXTREME 4X4 NO ESCAPE ROUTE”
This was the official start of the red trail. We wanted to make the most of the experience. The red trail should only be attempted with 2 or more vehicles. We did not err on the side of caution and decided to tackle the red trail.
The views were immediately rewarding. We were soon nestled within the northern slopes of the Magaliesburg. Only about 45km outside the city on the border of the Gauteng and North West Provinces , it truly is a serene setting.
De Wildt's red trail is littered with large rocks and winds its way through beautifully shaded areas too.
We noticed that the red trail essentially follows and intersects with the hiking trail. So if you're into hiking, it's definitely a challenging trail to consider.
At the halfway point of the red trail is the famous obstacle called ‘Gert Se Klip’. This obstacle is also a part of the yellow trail and is the most well known.
Let’s take a break from our in-depth 4x4 trail & show you around our campsite.
De Wildt’s Loerie Campsite is charming and perfect for our humble setup. Individual campsites are wonderfully shaded, have enough grass coverage, privacy, braai facilities and electricity. Different campsites can accommodate larger camping setups and there are very neat ablution facilities.
Birds and sounds of nature joined us for breakfast & dinner. Rates are super reasonable at only R100 per person per night + R80 for the campsite. If you’re camping at De Wildt, there is only a once-off R350 fee for the 4x4 trails allowing you to hit the trails for the entire duration of the camping trip.
Having decided to continue with the red trail, we were on the prowl for a shaded lunch spot. Luckily, the next part of the trail took us through a shaded section beneath a stunning canopy of trees.
There were plenty of large boulders to overcome on the way here.
At this point one can bypass the obstacle and opt not to continue with the red trail, doing the yellow trail instead. We weren’t in a cautious mood and decided to tackle this obstacle and continue with the red trail too.
‘Gert Se Klip’ is a very steep rock face. It’s largely smooth with very little traction. Once you go up, you must come down. We were very surprised at how composed the Jeep was.
The red trail soon revealed why it is notorious. This is what we would coin as the gatekeeper to the final parts of the red trail.
A sharp left turn with large boulders at the entry point to the turn and at the exit but on opposite ends making for a situation requiring enough flex and precise wheel placement.
Now it was time for Ice Cream (not the refreshing kind). Ice Cream is the final extreme part of the red trail. A Jaw dropping descent with large boulders & loose terrain.
The Jeep basically slid down that obstacle at off-camber angles while trying to get over the large boulders situated in a way that made alternative lines difficult. It required immense concentration & a lot of bravery (even if we say ourselves).
Masterful manouvering such a rough terrain.The landscape is beautiful,reminds me of places my late husband and I travelled in Zimbabwe and Botswana

What wheels and tyres do you have on? Rim size, width and offset and tyre size?
Hi there. Thanks for watching. Rims are 17” x 9j. Offset is -12 and I have hub centric wheel spacers 35mm. Tyres are 35/12.50r17 Federal Couragia M/T
