You are are perhaps the coolest young people I have ever seen, factual, informative and honest describing some of the detritus surrounding my home town of Folkestone. It would be good if you could research the many bunkers etc. between Folkestone and Dover and further describe the use of these bunkers in the WWII war. I look forward to walking round these areas in the future with your insight and research. Thank you for the honest grass roots video.
Lived in folkestone all my life didn't know these places existed its nice to see young lads being interested in this sort of thing not out there causeing trouble or trying to be big men
Well done fellas
I’m glad you enjoyed :) Yeah it’s a shame that so many young people seem to have the intention of destroying these places rather than appreciating their history - the amount of graffiti etc is upsetting. Hopefully we’ll be able to get out again soon...
yes, exactly what i was thinking, refreshing to see
Thanks guys, haven't been there for many years. The Martello tower that has been converted into a home was accessable when I was very young. My mother would camp on the warren when she was a child and collected water from the tower on the golf course. I think thats an observation post on top or possibly anti aircraft gun position, Good luck and stay safe.
I'm a Folkestone girl and as a kid would play in the old bunkers. That particular Martello tower is open to the public in the summer and there are a couple more near by that people have bought to live in. Great video guys, brings back a lot of lovely memories 😘
+sharon beckett no problem, glad you enjoyed. Maybe in the summer we will return to see the inside of some. Thanks for watching :)
Wonderful vid. Excelent naration. Keep up guys theyre a joy to watch.
+olive W cheers, glad you enjoy :)
great sites to explore, but you should get a little more background research so you can actually describe what was in the bunkers,ie: what kind of gun(anti aircraft, shore batteries to defend against ships or landing craft) or just observation
small towns like your's are bound to have people that actually manned these sites as part of the home guard
+white03Mach1 when we start to upload videos again in the next couple of weeks, we are planning to get some information about the sites beforehand. Thanks for the feedback :)
Brilliant video's buddys really enjoy watching your videos keep up the good work more please
Nice to see youngsters getting involved with the history of their local area keep up the good work
Thanks! There’s so much history around, it makes for a great explore
Music, camera shots and angles are all great. Very professional guys. Keep it up!
+John Costello thanks so much, we really appreciate it :)
another quality video lads!! keep up the good work!!
+Alex Wishart Cheers ;)
Really great video again. Have you got a long monopod or selfie stick perhaps for putting a small action cam in those hard to reach places?
+Geekanoids We used to borrow an action cam from a friend but we don't anymore - hopefully we'll buy one soon. I agree that would be a good idea :)
there’s some more abandoned places in folkestone one down the road of remembrance and one near the harbour inn. also i liked this video it was well filmed and enjoyable to watch :)
Well done , nice to see people interested in this stuff , great footage too.
These explores are really good!
+Harold Red Thanks mate :)
Wonderful adventure, thankyou for all the leg work.
+olcarfreek no problem, thanks for watching :)
Very well made video. I think the ridges shape on the pillbox opening might have been for sitting the riffle barrel on? not sure, but not seen it at any other location. The three large concrete blocks. I think that was the base for ranging equipment. Nice video.
Yeah, you're correct, the ridges would've held rifles and LMGs, and the three blocks could either be a machine gun mount or a small anti-aircraft gun. Thanks for watching 👍
Excellent channel guys, enjoy your filming, narration and enthusiasm, have subbed and wish you well in all future endeavours.
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed the video 👍
Wow amazing 👏 history you should come at least once 😉 here we have few more sites love from india....
Nicely done video guys I enjoyed it.
+Leigh Rich thanks :)
One Pillbox still has an Oerlikon gun on top there are miles of fighting tunnels if you know where to look
The grooves in the floor look like they would have had covers and might be ducting for cables, maybe have a dig around at the one end to see if there's a pipe where cables could enter. Alternatively they might be drains which would have had metal grids on, so that rain entering the open part of the building wouldn't get as far as the rooms behind. Again there would be a pipe at the end to take water away.
+Nigel2AB very interesting, thanks for the information, and thanks for watching :)
Nigel2AB what are the chances that it is a grenade sump?
I don't know anything about those, I think they had covers as they step inwards an inch down from the top.
The groves in the floor are for communication cables they would have had a concrete cover over them.
amazing video guys ;-) well done :D
+DNA100 Explores cheers boss :)
The Dragons Teeth were dumped there by the council when they used it as a tip i think they came from the New Road now Churchill Ave
You need to talk to Andrew Mullen. Also my Grandfather was a gunner above Folkestone Harbour
Very, very impressed. I like your enthusiasm & local knowledge. Well done!! Out of interest the Martello on east cliffe, does have a WWII gun emplacement on the top. It used to be open to the public.
Glad you enjoyed the video, we'll try to check it out at some point. Thanks for watching :)
I’ve lived in Folkestone all my life and never explored this-
That bridge you walked over by Little Switzerland was built by the Chinese Labour Force 80,000 were camped there and on Sugarloaf Hill during WWI waiting to go to Belgium and France some of their graves are at Shorncliffe
Thank you, good education on the [bunkers][u.s.] So good I didn't notice the vandalism on the wall. Great job! Love your video's.
+THE SHOSHONE NATIVE Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it. :)
Nice video. "what you see here is a door frame, where there would have been a door"
Keep exploring lads
Lewis and Ed now that's a team to beat! Nice video and what a great scenery. Keep up the cinematography and the interesting places to "Xplore" thanks fellows. Tom-WV
nice video dude
+Escape The Wild -Urbex & Ruin hunter- thanks mate :)
Good vid guys, very interesting.
+Jack Griffin we appreciate your support. :)
Great vid guys. I'll bet if you checked there's probably some old timers still living in the area that could give you some history on the stuff you're taping. It would surely be more interesting to know exactly what were looking at. But still fun, definitely. Keep up the great work guys. Oh and on my computer I keep having to turn the volume down when the music is playing and then back up when you're talking. It could just be me though.
+MrMitchB thanks for the feedback, we shall take your sound issue into account and adjust the volume levels. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching :)
Boa bom video meu chefe
Just an FYI theres an old ROC post just next to the martello tower. Its sealed but worthy of note.
+Ben W Thanks Ben, we actually did take a look when we were there, but unfortunately it did not make it into the final video. Thanks for letting us know though, and hope you enjoyed the video :)
Just found your channel from a Dover video! Great job guys! Making me miss my old home XD
Hey, thanks for watching, we appreciate your support, don't worry, new videos coming very soon!
Xplorer great cant wait to see them
4m 30 into ur video u show a three way check point, and u went straight ahead towards the valiant, but if u turned off down the hill and go in from the corner of the park at the bottom of the hill u will find an old hospital aswel!! , didn't know if this checkpoint was linked.....
Nice video :)
+Exploring With Lucy thanks :)
This is very professional. Awesomely explained. I really like your video. And the views. & I want to explore some of your other videos sometime. I subscribe. & I am glad I noticed you in my recommendations from youtube,.
+telsah1 thanks for subscribing, glad you enjoyed the video. :)
+telsah1 Thanks for the nice comment, glad you enjoyed! :)
At 11.33 it was a dumping place in the 2nd world war, when homes/ churches ect got bombed that was where they dumped all the bricks ect
great video
+stephen gunrunner hanson Thanks :)
Nice video ,that was the sewage pipe out to sea, the fire control point on the cliff top if you look carefully at the 3 pillars you will see the regiment that built it. And In front of the volunteers lookout post is the nuclear fall out monitoring post. Lots of history around that area. Great video thanks
Thanks for the extra information mate, really appreciated, also, glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching 👍
martello no3 was used by the royal navy. folkestone harbour was mined and the controls where in that tower. it only looks over the port.
keep the good work up
Interesting, thanks for the information and thanks for watching :)
shakespeare cliff eh? i wonder what you might be looking for ;-D
Great vid guys.
+Sub Exploration glad you enjoyed, but what are we supposed to be looking for?
;-D you know, a certain long chalky tunnel 😉
+Sub Exploration there's a tunnel there??! We were going to look at the bunkers and the remains of the colliery. OK then.
AHHHH, there must be two Shakespear Cliff's then XD
+Sub Exploration between dover and Folkestone is the one we're going to
Cool
+Sole Fitzgerald cheers :)
Ok so chaps your channel is so beautiful, I am thoroughly enjoying watching you.
I was expecting to find Private Godfrey and Corporal Jones manning their post.
the first pillbox had a brick wall inside, this was an anti-richocet device to reduce the effect of live rounds being fired into the bunker from outside.
+Gavin Thompson Cool, thanks for the information :)
nice work guys
+AnarchoPlant thanks :)
Used to spend hours playing in them as a kid. My house was at bottom of hill
+funnelweb10 interesting, thanks for watching :)
The bridge behind Martello No:1 was built by the Chinese Labour Force while waiting to go to France during WWI
Very interesting video! As some others have commented, the 3 pillars at 6.00 look like those found in PF Cells (Position Finding Cells). There are some of these in Singapore and you can see pictures and read about them here: www.fortsiloso.com/batteries/defences/pfcells/pfcells.htm
Cheers mate, yeah I think you're right about them being PF cells. Thanks for the info, we'll read up on it. Glad you enjoyed the video 👍
Three concrete pillars are to support the three legs of a machine gun tripod. Floor slots are grenade pits, to kick a grenade in if it was tossed in the bunker.
+Kyle Samuels interesting, thanks. We appreciate your support :)
I'm seeing some excellent vidiography. Did you boys study this in school?
the anti-tank devices on the beach are commonly known as dragon's teeth.
+Gavin Thompson Interesting. I actually screenshot this comment as it seems like a good fact to remember! :)
Ed, have you ever considered presenting Homes Under The Hammer?
I did. They didn't offer enough pay. Xplorer is a much better use of my time
At 6:30 the 3 concrete pillars are for a ranging device to triangulate a target from several different points to aim the big guns effectively
+Paul Ahern ok, thanks for letting us know. Thanks for watching :)
Xplorer there is one(3 pillars) left exactly the same in a very similar observation post which is part of the ranging/tracking for the Wright's Hill battery of WW2 9.2" guns(x3) guarding Wellington Harbour and the Cook Straight. That is Wellington, New Zealand a wee way away from your one (12,000 miles!). I kid you not, it is almost exactly the same, a long slit opening that goes round the corner about 1 or 2m at each end.... There are a couple here in Wgtn, if you come here you can see one on a hill at the south end of Wgtn airport looking south out to sea. The guns were on the highest hill near the city (suburb of Karori) had a range of up to 25miles to cover most of the Cook Straight between the 2 biggest islands in NZ, imaginatively called the North and South Islands (by an Englishman, Capt. James Cook). Great videos I am jealous we have so few forts here. There is a WW1 Armstrong "Disappearing" gun that still works at Port Chalmers in the South Island
+Paul Ahern I have been to New Zealand before, but I don't think I'll be going back any time soon, but thanks for the information :)
Shame you couldn't get inside. Still nice to see it
+ronnie cardy Thanks :)
you misser the bottle dump down at the warren. loads of old pottery and victorian bottles get washed out of the clay. have a look at little john metal detecting. on youtube that guy often drags out some nice finds
+SteamMachine Ok cool thanks :)
I subscribed!
+William Quinnell Thank you! :)
Ah but ya don't know about the 2 martello towers in the woods between Folkestone and Hythe which are actually accessible (climb up to the window, inside and then up the stairs to the roof)...
We have in fact explored these, watch ‘Searching for Abandoned Martello Towers in Hythe’ ruclips.net/video/k8_GlqtQmRI/видео.html
Where can you find the place shown at 5:13 I been trying to find it for ages
Go down the footpath next to the pub at the top of the hill and you’ll reach it :)
good job boys
Chillin Palmer Thanks mate :)
Not a "complaint" as such.... just constructive criticism....as i do like what you are doing :] and am not too far away from you myself and indeed am having editing issues myself due to 2 out of date macs i have....7 year old macbook pro and 9 year old imac, both top specs but sooooo slow and unable to edit or view 4K footage. It is painful.
Yeah I have a similar problem which is why we’re sticking with 1080p for the time being. I don’t think 4K is particularly necessary anyway, not for our use at least!
@@xplorer9713 but 4K does allow for reframing and zooming to some extent, if you have missed something and see it during the edit
very interesting
+INSPECTOR FROST thanks :)
Great attitude!
+Mike Coker thanks for watching :)
'City' of Folkestone?
You also walked over Horsa's grave
As someone else has mentioned, it would be worth your while doing a bit of research and also contacting IKS Exploration from Dover. The bunker with the large opening and three concrete pillars is an observation post and the pillars would have held the various instruments for bearing and range finding. The slots in the floor are probably for cables etc. You correctly mentioned about the shutters which slid up to protect the occupants of the post. Regarding the Roman Villa, if you look on google earth and look at the 1940 aerial photos , it clearly shows the layout of the villa. Great video.
Thanks so much for the information, we really appreciate it. With our newer videos and the ones we will be making in the summer, we intend to research more of the history and design of the building to overall give a more in depth explore for our viewers, such as yourself, to enjoy.
thanks, great vídeo, but i think have tunnels betweein this bunkers,... cross this Hill
Interesting, I guess we should go back and have another look then. Thanks for letting us know 👍
sealed up after the war... looks like it's coming down the overhang is pulling the roof down the engine looks like an old small generator.. the pipe arrangement could be part of the WW2 plan to set the sea on fire in case of invasion, but that's just a total guess it could be something innocent lol
+Bill Hanson interesting suggestions, you could be right, we'll have to look into it. Thanks for watching :)
That was my first thought too !
Adverts what a pain
Erm Folkestone is not a city! BUT an excellent video.
+Toni Love thanks for watching :)
Hi Guys well done,I found your site by chance and have watched 4/5 videos. With time and a bit of research this will be an outstanding site keep it up just a couple of notes if you don't mind
1) Pillbox with the bits of timber in the widow as you called them they are "Embrasure:
An opening in the fort walls which cannons can be fired. They were often flared outward to enlarge the field of fire and could be closed with a wooden cover when not in use".( you may fined this site helpful. forttaber.org/fortification-terminology/
2)The bit of wood in the embrasure probably is original it would have formed part of the shuttering when pouring the concrete and then supported the anti-ricochet defence. when a bullet enters the wood it stops it from ricocheting around the embrasure and possibly entering the position
3) As for the Martello tower, have a look here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martello_tower
4) On a safety note I hope you have back up touches and batteries for each of you with you when you go underground
Keep up the good work
Shaun
+Shaun Marsh thank you so much for all of the information, we will take it into account once we start uploading again. Thank you for watching. :)
Don't diss the young archeologist club
It's ok Ed we all support you ;)
Fresh brow bro
Just video
No history
No information
Just kids running around places their parents would not let them go
No u
Could you give us some of the locations?
+Noah Fowler which would you like?
Xplorer the location of that first pill box?
Xplorer and also the bunker you went too after please
+Noah Fowler I believe the pillboxes are on smallpox hill at the top of folkestone
+Noah Fowler the bunker is slightly further along smallpox hill
Obviously since your new too urban exploring you're not supposed to say where it is?
Are you saying we should, or we shouldn't? Lol its at small pox hill in Folkestone.
Well it's utter up to you but the more publicity the it'll get damaged
Everybody driving down the M20 can see it, so I shouldn't worry.
Dave P I suppose bit you'll see other places that folk leak and they just destroy them
It's a fair point, but these locations are all pretty public. Certainly wouldn't be a good idea to publicises ones that aren't so visible.
bolt cutters are cheap
Defence ur fences. Ha !
Defense not defence.
+Jeretta Shewmaker defence is also a correct spelling. Thanks for watching :)
Actually you boys have spelt it right, its the Americans who spell it with an S that has kind of got transported back to us in ole blighty!
is it only me who noticed Ed put his hand in dog poo on the trig point?
+exploring abandoned No he didn't it was the other side lol
get yourself a clip on microphone....or stop turning away from the camera when you are speaking....and whoever is doing the colour grading NEEDS to sort their act out and do the same grading ACROSS ALL THE FOOTAGE....other than that and a lack of real knowledge about where you are visiting...keep it up.
Lol I had to rewatch this to remind myself of how inconsistent the colour was back then. Don’t worry, that and all your other complaints have been sorted in our more recent videos having received plenty of similar comments from others. So I recommend you check out our newer videos !
Why do you guys always have snouty noses. Your breathing always sounds labored. And you sound congested. Why is that?
I think it's a combination of the high quality mics that pick up everything and the fact that exploring normally ends up filling our noses with dust, or we catch a cold.
Gtf out of my town
You own Folkestone? GTF off here
Stephen Burnell it was a joke calm it
