Hey Degenerocity, so you know what you saw that summmer night right? I think you had something called "moi yaytsa cheshutsya". It was discovered by a Russian scientist in 1954. It started by scaring people and making them do scary task's and then putting them to bed right after. They did this for months and months. After some time, a few of them started to wake up in the night, like you did and start to see hallucinations that scared them. According to the documentation, they were looking at nothing but they looked petrified and scared for their life. I think you looking at horror so often as a kid led to you experiencing this. Just like the test subjects, you were put through scary tasks and went to bed after. Hope this helped.

So, in regards to Degenerocity’s story.
I think he might have been hallucinating due to, as he said, the heat of the room. It can usually occur because of high temperatures, and I’m assuming was fueled by him watching super scaring stuff as a kid. I think this is the case also due to the fact that the girl mentioned in the story is very similar to a popular horror movie antagonist, which is why he might have seen her. The same things with the candles, as it’s kind of a trope.

I find non-horror games like Ark can be scary unintentionally. I legit thought Ark is going to be a normal open world dinosaur game until you see the swamps or deep sea. The game manages to compile every fear I’ve had into one game (Thalassophobia, Claustrophobia, leeches, etc.). The devs probably didn’t intend for this game design, but this is one of the peak horror gaming experience for newcomers

Sleep paralysis is one of the scariest things I’ve witnessed. I’m 25 and it still happens to me. I recently moved and the VERY FIRST NIGHT I slept with the light on because I wasn’t familiar with the house yet and I may wake up confused. I opened my eyes and couldn’t move and heard my room mate ask for my keys and I told her they were on my computer desk. Then I saw a ghoulish looking thing walk into my sight and started staring at the wall. It had no skin pigmentation, black eyes and no hair. It scared THE HELL out of me. I immediately knew I was having sleep paralysis but it still scares me no matter how many times it happens.

I’ve had a story of paralysis. It was thanksgiving and I went to sleep. I randomly wake up at 3:00 AM. I can’t move. No matter how hard I tryed. Then I saw it. A skinny pale, about 10 ft tall thing with red eyes, holes in its cheeks so you could see the inside. With long hair covering only some of its face, crawling. But then it went inside the closet. So I put my iPad at full brightness and went downstairs were my brother was on the couch. But I still kept hallucinating stuff. Like worms, demons. Then at the door I saw a women with a white cloak and with a huge smile laughing. I couldn’t sleep. So I stayed awake til morning. That day would always traumatize me. And ever since that day I would be so afraid of the dark. Although I have tried to face it. And now I’m not scared of the dark now.

Scariest shit that ever happened to me when I was a kid were fever dreams. I remember waking up when I had this really bad flu, looking out my window and seeing what looked like a SWAT team about to break into my house and kill me and my mother. I remember running to the bathroom to throw up and I swear up until the vomit actually came out of my mouth I thought it was 100% real but the taste and shock of the vomiting snapped me out of it because it was the only thing I could think of.
Only other time that's happened was when I took a tolerance break after smoking weed every night. I couldn't tell my dreams from reality and when I woke up I saw a black figure staring at me threw my window and all I could see was the eyes staring at me. Freaked out and woke up and looked at the exact same spot in my window and there was no face but the view of the window looked identical to my dream so it felt like it just left.
    Scary shit.

My scary experience was the most fucked up stuff I’ve ever been through. So my family goes to a beach house every summer. Normally I sleep on a pullout in the center of the house but last year I finally got a room to myself. The third night there I was sleeping when I heard some floor creaks. We’ve been going to this house for about 7 years at this point so I didn’t think to much of it at first but then it got louder and louder until every creek was deafening. I was 16 at the time yet I felt like a scared little kid facing the wall hiding under the covers. Then the creaks would suddenly become quiet again growing louder and louder again and getting fast every time. Eventually it got so fast the whole house was filled with it. Then definitely defined foot steps could be heard from the top floor and I could hear them CHARGING down the 3 floors. Finally I had the balls to get up and I just screamed as loud as I could at the thing to get it to go away. Then I could faintly hear my uncle tell me to shut the fuck up from across the hall and my cousins complaining about being woken up. Apparently I woke up the whole house but nobody else heard the creaking or the loud ass foot steps coming down the stairs. I haven’t really thought about it lately but watching this vid reminded me of it.
Edit: I forgot to mention this, but I think I was having some sort of sleep paralyses episode because as soon as I actually got up the noises stopped completely. And yes, I did wake up the whole house and yes, my family is crazy enough to curse me out at 4:30 in the morning.

Man something similar happened with me too
I just woke up that time prolly that's why I was a lil dizzy and thot whatever I saw was just me hallucinating
      Anyways so it was
In the summer holidays me and my siblings go to our grandparent's home there I developed a habit of waking up at 4 am and playing game until anyone else woke up
One night when I woke up I again went to the other room to play the games on my PC
Everyone would sleep in the same room as the house was old. I saw the bathroom door was open so I went thot I will take a leak but I saw something flying like a cloth blue cloth and I heard a voice like "aye" I thot my grandma was in the bathroom so I went and peed in another bathroom then I went straight to the computer but it won't turn on so I thought to check the cables (CPU would be kept on the floor and very close to a wall and door so if I wanted to check the cables I would have to open the door and from outside I would plug em) but when I tried to open the door it felt like someone from the other side was pulling on the door I tried harder but it won't open so I just jerked real hard and door would open I jumped out of the door to see who was pulling it from other side there was no one also I saw my grandma wasn't in the house she wasn't sleeping nor she was in any of the bathrooms I thot she just went out as she would regularly go for morning walks I played on the computer for few hrs I heard tap running in the bathroom but I thot it would be my mother our sibling I just ignored and kept playing then after a while I stood up and went in the bathroom and I saw my grandma was washing something
I was so confused I asked her if she went for her walk but she said she didn't that day
When everyone woke up I told the whole incident they just laughed and told I was prolly dreaming and how technically according to my story grandma is the ghost
Is till dk what happened that day but maybe I was just hallucinating coz I am high af when I wake up

In regards to the story at the end, hallucinations can feel extremely real even after they happen. I know that when I was younger I would have quite a few of them and the only reason it didn’t take too long for me to figure out they weren’t real was the pure weirdness, like guys in ladybug suits crawling on the wall and myself with a knife leading me to the kitchen before just disappearing somewhere, all of this usually happening late at night while I was fully awake. Also I used to see various horror movie characters outside my windows, typically walking away from the window and vanishing. I know for sure if the circumstances were more realistic, I would absolutely thought the hallucinations were real (or who knows, that could’ve really been the evil version of me transferring timelines or something)

When my brother (let's call him Ben) was very little, he would have the same nightmare every night. In such nightmare, his mom would say goodnight and leave the room, then some sort of terrifying crocodile robot would come out of the closet and ever so slowly crawl towards him. Once it finally reaches Ben, the dream would end and he would wake up next morning.
This absolutely freaked Ben out, especially since the same dream happened every single night (with varying things that attacked and left him. He said that the mom switched out for a soldier once).
Eventually, he decided that he had no choice but to face his fears. So during one of these nightmares, he jumped out of his bed and ran towards the crocodile. As soon as Ben touched it, the dream ended. From that day forth, he never had that nightmare again.

so i grew up with sleep paralysis, and I remember one of these fits like it was a tragedy in my own life. This was back in the 3rd grade when Slenderman was basically the face of internet horror. I don't know why but I was always watching those slenderman sighting videos where they show you pictures with a very obvious slenderman photoshopped into the background. As a kid it was real tho. Every night i would have nightmares of the guy, and I would peak out of my window to see if he was out there. But one night I ended up having a terrible case of sleep paralysis. I couldn't move my body, just my eyes. I would look around my room and in the corner of my eye it was like I saw him, inhumanly towering over me in the corner of my room. Shit was crazy as a kid, i would scream in the middle of the night and even wake up my mom to ask if i could sleep with her

The story at the end sounds like sleep paralysis. The idea that the "paralysis" only infers that you can't move whatsoever is unlikely. When I had been stuck in these experiences, sometimes I was able to move my arms, or as little as my tongue. More likely the "paralysis" refers to the physical/spiritual state you're trapped in, between your dream state, and reality.

You could see her face but it was weird. The two men would hit the drums really loudly and it'd echo across the neighbourhood. They would walk around his street and then the next, across the whole neighbourhood. He'd see this every week, and he eventually woke up my grandmother(his mother) and she also saw it. When I got older I asked her again to make sure none of them were messing with me and she stills said yes, that'd she had seen it as well. I had an experience that was somewhat similar. My bed was in the center of my room against the wall at one point. I woke up facing the right side after just having woken up from a nightmare and was calming down, but something still felt wrong. I felt like if I were to turn around I would be faced with something awful. I was completely filled with dread. But I knew I had to turn around since there was no other way out of it. I slowly turned to face whatever was behind me but stopped right as it reached my peripheral. It was a lanky, completely black figure. It’s head was twitching inhumanly as it looked down on me. It was the morning, so I could see it clearly, which just made it so much worse. I stopped moving, just preparing myself for what it would do, and once I was ready, I turned fully. The second I did, it snapped its neck with the loudest crack I had ever heard in my life. I shot up from bed with tears in my eyes, gasping. I realized that I had actually woken up this time, and whatever I had seen hadn’t really happened. I immediately looked it up and it’s called Exploding Head Syndrome. It’s the only time I’ve experienced it and I hope I never have it again.

Something that has always haunted me to this day was a nightmare I had when I was 13 the night before Christmas. This nightmare was so traumatizing to me that it made anything horror seem like a joke to me because this is truly horror.
So basically what happened in the nightmare is that I woke up in a black vast area. Nothing but a yellow door in front of me with a red poppy. With nowhere to go, I walk towards the door and pick the poppy up, it look pretty and it’s just a habit really, for me to pick up random flowers that look pretty to me, and red poppies are gorgeous. I open the door, red poppy in hand and I walk into a new environment. It looked majestic, warm vanilla white columns floating in the air surrounded by beautiful cotton candy skies, walking on feather like clouds. Another poppy is in front of a yellow door. I pick it up and open the next door. It’s weird, I’m in the same environment I was in for the black vast space. Now it’s a black door, with another red poppy in front of the door. I pick up the poppy and open the door. I’m now in some sort of city. There’s a path of red poppies leading to a coffee shop. I follow the path and it leads to this girl sitting at a table. I didn’t want to seem weird so I sit at a table not too close to her but where I can get a view of her. I sit there for a while, waiting for her to do something. She doesn’t do anything. She just sits there, on her phone for what seems like forever, so I decide to leave. As I’m walking out though I notice that she too starts to finally walk out. I find it weird, but just continue walking. The path of red poppies appear vividly again, and with no choice since I don’t really know where I am, I follow it. It lead me to a building. I go inside and walk up the countless flights of steps. I don’t really know what’s going on still, but my curiosity kills me so I just continue on to the final floor. It’s weird, every step felt so real, the echos of steps in the empty stairwell. There it is, the final door. The door I started with. A yellow door with a red poppy. I open the door for it to reveal a rooftop with the path of poppies leading to a ledge. The view of the whole city, the lights twinkling. The misty fog but most of all the familiar feeling I felt when I started in the black space. I walk outside. But I can’t. I try again. I can’t. Then I realize I can’t move. But I hear footsteps? Why do I hear footsteps? I watch the girl I saw in the coffee shop walk past me, following the red poppies. It starts to all make sense to me. The realization hit me like a hard punch. The footsteps I thought that were mine, were hers. The path of poppies were for her, not for me. The yellow door represented the yellow door leading to the rooftop of the skyscraper like building. I can’t move anything, I can’t speak. I can only watch in horror as I see her go up to the ledge…and jump. The red poppies start making sense. As I still had them clutched tightly in my hand, I was the one leading her to her death. Red poppies represent death. I was leading her to this very event. Me holding the red poppies was me practically throwing them down to set down the final step for her. I was able to do nothing but watch helplessly as I saw her take her life. I witnessed death.
In a blink of an eye I’m back in the black space unable to move seeing only red poppies around me. As the black room turns red from all the red poppies started to rapidly surround me until I’m drowning in them, suffocating, gasping for air.
    Then I woke up.
I see three red poppies in a yellow vase replacing the red roses I had.
    True horror.

the closest i've ever gotten to having a paranormal experience was someone knocking on my grandma's bedroom door and though a lot of people were downstairs (old people) who could have likely done it, i asked everyone if they knocked on the door, and they all said no.
i resorted to logic and thought that probably must have been one of them who forgot that they even knocked on the door. but man when i came back upstairs, there was a silhouette of a lady behind the curtain and i bolted outta there for the love of god.

The part where you talked about icebergs and horror videos losing their fear factor hit a little too close to home. I grew up with this stuff, and when I first learned about Blank Room Soup I found it so terrifying, same with stuff like DHMIS or Salad Fingers.
Now they're just done to death. It also doesn't help that the origins of the videos always get found out and it's always disappointing. The guy who made the suits in Blank Room Soup made the videos and said that they got stolen for attention, Agamemnon Counterpart was an art project, I Feel Fantastic was never meant to be creepy and was someone's legit attempt at making their android (Tara) sing.
And then there's the made-up backstories that are so fake it hurts. Like the android in I Feel Fantastic murdering people and wearing their clothes, or Blank Room Soup being a Dark Web execution video.

One of the most scary experiences I remember as a kid is a memory I have on a summer night where I was watching tv while my brother was asleep, I remember what show was playing too, it was a back at the barnyard show playing on nick. And the episode had something to do with an evil cow coming by to do something bad, I don’t remember the plot too well. But at the end of the episode as it faded to black, the cow poked his head through the fade to say something like “you better not say anything or I’ll find you” and then the tv shut off on its own. I was terrified and all I could hear was the light static of the tv fading and my heart pounding to my chest. I was around 7 I think so this really did scare the fuck out of me, it was a pitch black room, and all I heard was crickets outside my window. I never forgot it. But thinking about it now, the tv turning off was most likely a screen timer so it would shut off after a set time, and the ending could have been something that wasn’t all that threatening and I probably remember it wrong, either way, that’s one of the scariest things I remember from my childhood, it’s dumb, I know but I thought I’d share it to see if anyone else had a similar experience.

I’ve had a similar experience, but it’s not really a creepy story-just mad weird when I think back on it. I think I was 5 or 6 years old, and it was Christmas Eve (technically Christmas Day because it was like 3am). I laid awake in bed pretty much all night, pretending to sleep but too excited to actually sleep. I was listening closely for hours, to see if I could hear Santa coming in or something, but it was dead silent. At one point, I did manage to fall asleep, but only for about half an hour. When I woke up I could hear bells ringing, the noise getting louder and louder until I opened my eyes. “Oh shit,” I thought. “Santa’s here!” So I sat up, looked at my door-and I know this is going to sound corny as shit but it’s really what happened: I saw a reindeer. A whole reindeer. In my room. Moving around. Some shit out of a Disney movie, but not animated. Everything looked real except for how it glowed with a blue aura and moved like a mirage, fading in and fading out as it got closer. I looked at the floor. There were actual wet tracks of snow where its footprints would have been. I rubbed my eyes, looked back, and it was still there. At this point I was fully awake and alert and it hadn’t disappeared yet. I got out of bed and ran to go get my mom and show her what I just saw, but of course it was gone when we got back to my room. Maybe I did hallucinate it, but to this day I’ve never had another experience like that. It was magical as shit, but strange at the same time.

But your story was really scary as well.
A really scary experience I had when I was younger was when my parents unexpectedly left the house in the middle of the night leaving my brother and me to fend for myself in our trailer. So one night I randomly woke up at probably 1-4 AM and just like you I checked both of the sides of my bed. Once I turned to look on the opposite side I was facing I saw what looked like one of those really creepy scarecrow people. He wasn't doing much and I couldn't hear him but that scared the hell out of me. Eventually after hiding under my covers I fell asleep and once morning came there was no trace of him. I think the reason why I saw him was because I just woke up and my mind was still half asleep causing my dreams and reality to mix. This is also what I think happened to you.

Ive had 2 experiences with these things that I dont even know how to explain:
    1) I was walking home from practice at night. I live 5 minutes away from my gym so it was a pretty short walk, but the entire time I was walking behind a short pudgy woman in a black coat. She had short blonde hair, wore one of those short tophats and she carried a briefcase with her. After walking up a few stairs and turning left into a wide open space, I followed her and she was nowhere to be seen. She couldnt have ran anywhere because I was really close to her and there were no places to hide there and no doors to go through. I still think about it sometimes.
    2) There is a window in a narrow corridor next to my building. The window is to a neighbours shed thats attached to his house. I was walking home from practice (again) and passed through the corridor on my way back when I felt a really tight grip on my right shoulder. I turned around and no one was there, but then I glanced through the window and saw a pale white face in the top right corner of the room that dissapeared after like half a second. I told it to my parents and they just said that Im tired and probably felt a cramp or something, but when I looked in the mirror the skin on my shoulder was red, indicating that something actually touched it. Fucking weird

hallucinating after waking up at night is so common i bet many people have this and never even realize. One I used to always get is someone knocking on my door, or people talking in the other room, when I knew there was no one in the house and the knocking didn't make any sense, because it was on my bedroom door, which was open and there was no one in the house, but the knocking I would get almost every night. I've had ones that were off the rails too, like seeing my entire room perfectly while my eyes are closed, then opening my eyes and closing them and it making literally no difference, saw the wall next to my bed be pushed further back than normal, reached out to touch it and could feel the wall was there, but to my eyes it was further back, all of it felt 100% real, not a dream. I used to have them almost daily and figured out it was from drinking too much coffee, had really scary ones too, the typical old hag sitting on your chest and so on, but also some cool ones like a traffic stop sign just sitting in my room, or strange glowing geometric shapes floating around my room. I know a really common one people get is spiders crawling on their walls.

For me, my introduction to horror was the first two Dead Space games, Bioshock, Resident Evil 4, and Silent Hill 2. These games still terrify me, because they weren't afraid to kill you in some of the most gruesome ways imaginable. I wish we had that era of horror back. Maybe some day...

The scariest thing that ever happened to me was when my big family visited one of our relatives in our hometown for a wedding party. Long story short the home of that relative was in a not so small alleyway (cars can go through it) but since it was an alleyway we had to park our 3 cars in front of a small warehouse with pretty minimal lighting.
After chatting with the relative, we were told to eat but my aunt told me to come and bring my uncle over for dinner she said that my uncle was going to rest in the car parked in front of the warehouse, so i came and checked. The car light was on and the seat was leaned back, i checked there was indeed a person resting there, but the person wasn't facing me so i knocked on the window and my uncle still wouldn't face me. At that point I knew something was fishy and knocked one last time when finally that thing faced me and it had no face.
Fr, ong, no🧢. So I ran as fast to the road so i can go back to our relatives house, when coming back I just smiled, after that my mother asked me "why are you smiling" and i said "it wasn't uncle" and she just sat there and didn't understand the context. And get this, the mind boggling thing was when i got back, my uncle came through the kitchen grabbing a plate trying to eat dinner. I was shook, timbers were shivered. Then my aunt thanked me for telling my uncle to eat dinner, and then i told her i didn't tell him to come here and just told the whole shenanigans to her.
That one was one of the scarier experiences i've had, i've experienced poltergeists, voices, and stuff but never had i seen an apparition until that time.

I wouldn’t say this was the creepiest thing that has ever happened to me in my life, but it was something that I still get weirded out by from time to time. This is a pretty short one. Back when we used to live in our old house, I used to sleep on the bottom mattress that you could pull from under my parent’s bed. I was still so young to have my own room. Nothing scary or different about the house, but one morning, I woke up to a brown animalistic figure just right beside the mattress. It was so quick that I wasn’t able to remember every single detail about the thing. It snarled and lunged at my leg like a wild animal. In my sheer panic, I got up from the mattress to get away and I remember snapping out of it because I heard my Mom come up the stairs. It disappeared as soon as she came. The reason why it still leaves me baffled to this day, is because when i went to school, I found claw marks on my right leg. I told my Mom about it around 5 years later. For a hallucination, it felt pretty real.

The scariest I've experienced is discrepancies with my memories. Sometimes, a family member would go out and since I am a room goblin staying in a single room, I would lock all the doors so I can stay a goblin. But you see, one of the doors can ONLY be closed from the inside so you gotta understand the panic I've felt when I was supposed to lock the door then it turns out it's already locked. It already happened to me twice, and I still don't know if my memory is just that screwed or there is a mysterious entity thinking it would be funny seeing me panic by its troll. It may have not been as scary as my sleep paralysis experiences(which I have a lot of, so much so that I can predict when I'll be hit by one so I could close my eyes, but unfortunately, I can't stop or numb my senses so it is still uncomfortable when your nightmare is falling off from a high ass tower(I experienced this once and my body hate it), getting stabbed(Idk, my body felt slight pain after every stab) and my most recent one which is getting flung off in a forest. I think I was flying there but since my eyes were closed, I can only conclude that my body was flying through a forest and the uncomfort I only felt is the wind(??) I was constantly feeling while flying through the air. I still don't know the prerequisite of which nightmarish hell I'll experience but I can atleast tell when I'll have 'em, and the most surefire way for me to experience a sleep paralysis is sleeping before 10pm because my body says why not everytime I try to sleep. Also, Deja vu is a beach, idk why it always keep appearing like hell for me.

Paralysis? Pff, that’s nothing! I was outside (of course when I was young) and was sitting under a tree on a hill outside my house. I saw a shadow on the tree that was moving. I assumed it was a bird, and I was right. But when I stood up to get a look, my shadow on the tree DID NOT MOVE. I just stared at it as it just stayed there for like 20 seconds before it slid to the right and was gone. I was alone too! Which really helped my mom believe…

When it comes to the scary experience you had that night, you would be surprised by how vivid dreams and hallucinations can be, I have had dreams in the past that have made me feel mild physical pain if something bad happened to me on the dream, and some sleep paralysis hallucinations (visual and auditive) that have weirded me out, like people talking as if I was on a school cafeteria or spiders crawling around the walls of my room (also, weirdly enough, a food cart at the side of my bed for some reason once?), all of these things happened to me specifically during two years of my life and then never again, I can't remember how long has it been since it happened to me, you probably had something similar, a weird dream-like experience once and never again. Also, notice how you heard whispering but you are not sure about anything coherent she said and how she had the classic ghost woman in white robes look? This makes it more likely that it wasn't real, because those two factors make it very likely that you were being influenced by classic horror tropes, at this point of my life scary evil women in white robes on horror movies make me laugh more than they scare me because of how much of a stereotype they are.

If your looking for more horror you should look into the strange disappearances that happen in national parks and forests. There are some truly strange stories out there. One that still gives me chills, I don't remember it fully but it goes like this, a kid got lost at Mt Shasta, search and rescue found the kid on a path they already searched. A while later after the ordeal had passed, the kid told his grandma that he didn't like the "other" grandma. She was like who? The kid said the one from the forest, he was taken to a cave by an identical looking grandma and there were other humans he described as "robots", the other people never moved, and there were various items like rucksacks and things there too. The kid described that the grandma was a "robot" and had sparkling eyes. The grandma told him to defecate on a piece of paper but he couldn't, "it" insisted and got agitated, but then the grandma returned him back to the path where he was then found. There's more to it but that apparently is a true story from just 2014. The kid's parents knew about it when the grandma enquired but they refused to ask too many questions so that he can move on from this.

I heard a story that a man found a cave or opening in Mount Shasta through which he found a lost city with 8ft talk human skeletons some 40-50 years back but he couldn't do anything alone so he returned home and sold the information and location of it to a archaeological company when the company's men went there they couldn't find anything and by that time the man was dead , and another story goes ( I read this on one videos comment section ) The man wrote that he saw some weird lights on Mount Shasta and asked the locals about it and they said it must be reflection of something so the man decided to investigate it by going with some binocular lens at night towards there as he went there in night some goverment officials came with a car and stopped him and asked him politely to go home

For anyone wondering about those night visions, there is a pretty uncommon term called Hypnagogic hallucinations which is state during which you are in REM sleep but you’re still partially awake so you see things that aren’t there and only figure it out once you break out of this state.
I remember sometimes seeing dozens spiders in my bed and running away, screaming, or talking with friends in my room only to notice that I was actually alone. The « best » ones I’ve had was to see a strange, almost otherworldly colorful triangle hover and spin above my legs or seeing a long vine creeping in my room, stretching toward my face.
It’s really something that can be either cool, beautiful or outright terrifying.
