I have to address that up until 1995, only European players could be awarded the ballon d'or, hence players like Pele or Maradona don't have any. Still, it doesn't make Yasin's career any less impressive.
Lev Yashin is a true legend in my view. When it comes to the far past of the game I think many players and achievements often tend to be overrated and romanticised, but I don't think that is the case here. The reason being that playing goalkeeper in the modern era is incredibly hard, if you consider that defence was usually terrible back when he played as were most keepers, so ending with a large scoreline in a single game wasn't all that rare, it shows just how good and innovative a keeper he was.
I forgot about Yashin but I feel bad for him as he lived in a bad time for the Soviet Union or Russia
Just imagine wanting to be a football player but you’re 12 and your in a factory day in day out to fight with your country for 6 YEARS
And people complain that it’s so hard these days🤦♂️

Remember that during that time most teams played with like 2 defenders and 6 forwards which made most games very high scoring, and Lev only conceeded 7 Goals in one season.

The only keeper that comes close to Lev Yashin for me is Gigi Buffon. Even still Yashin will always be the GOAT for keepers.

Well Pele didn’t have the nutrition knowledge or the state of the art training facilities of today. In the 50s and 60s the top players still smoked and drank a lot and the balls were made of leather and the pitches weren’t properly kept. You’ve got to think is Pele had all the modern stuff that Messi has, would Pele be just or good or even better?
The same with Lev Yashin and the modern keepers, remember the modern keepers still use Yashin’s ideas and inventions for themselves. All good questions

I knew he was a phenomenal goalkeeper but I didn’t know how ahead of his time he was. Bringing a lot of the techniques that changed the game forever and r still being used.
The argument you can make to counter your bill russell analogy is that if Yashin played today he would be even better because he will have all the modern day advantages

Like he was only playing max of 28 games a year...that's like 2 games a month...the question is...would his body keep up with playing twice a week like now?
As well as back then..there was no one who mastered techniques like KDB/CR7 etc who can put it top bins consistently...that's why you can never answer such questions

Looking at all the clips on RUclips about Lev Yashin, its self explanatory how good he would have been at that time. But I think that modern goalkeepers don't have that edge unlike gk's of Yashin's era. Today's striker or wingers (basically goal scorers) are fitter, faster, agile and score more goals than scorers at Yashin's time (that too today there's offside rule). Although there were strikers like Pele or Gerd Muller who use to score soo many goals, but modern players score even more. So now we can comprehend that how difficult it is for modern goalkeepers to face these goal poachers.

Only once conceded 3 goals and 7 times conceded 2 goals..
that means the other 45 games he only conceded 41 goals!

To answer wheter yashin was better or not, I have to answer yes. Hearing the stats and knowing his background he had such a talent for goalkeeping, also he is the founder of sweeper keeper style which alot if keepers use these days. If yashin never played the way he did, keepers today wouldn't have been the same. And the only reason i can say this for certain is, you simply can't master a way without having a founding master of the style, they would eventually have gotten the style of sweeper keeper, but I'd imagine it would be a poorer style of sweeping.
Actually bro hed do good in this era trust me, back then they still had hard as strikes with pure leather balls and that must hurt plus saving that many is still impressive and he is the goat

Many keepers of the current age would have been great in the 50s and 60s, but we have to think how good Yashin would be noway. Given his physical condition and his dedication to the game he'd have adapted well to playing more with his feet and even though the ball is lightet these days and the pitches are nearly always in way better condition he would have adapted.
Also, he won the Ballon d'Or because in the 60s it was only for European players, otherwise Pele would've won them all in the 60s or almost all. There weren't so many huge European stars in the mid 60s, South America was still superior.

The record is 15 by Chelsea in the prem. Petr Cech was the keeper. But I do believe it was a longer season than the ones back in the 60s.
