Gary Richrath is one of the most underrated guitar players around, with a killer live tone. The whole band is full of great musicians. I do have to say I liked the 1970s era of REO, up through "You can Tune a piano . .. ," a lot ore than their poppier 80s stuff.

The strange thing is that this is NOT the audio from that 1979 German concert (for Rockpalast [Rock Palace], a German TV show), even though the rest of the show is available. But that is the audio from the live album (cover seen at the start of the video), as you can tell from Kevin Cronin (singer)'s "Happy Halloween" at the end.
My best guess is that the German audio glitched or something, so they covered by using the Live album performance instead. I mean, still GREAT, but weird.
Gary Richrath (guitar, songwriter) is always fantastic on this. It makes hunting up REO shows a joy.
(Just be sure they are pre-1990, as Kevin fired Gary in 1989. Which rather sucks because Gary was in the band first, although the only original members here are Neil Doughty [keyboards] and Alan Gratzer [drums].)

REO is one of my favorite bands. Saw them twice. 1982 in Austin & it was amazing- Survivor opened up for them. Then in Houston in 1996, but Gary wasn't with them. Foreigner & Peter Frampton were there too.
I grew up in central Tx and we moved to Dallas from 1979 to 1982 (I was 12 to 15 yrs old), and then moved back to central Tx. I sooo did not want to move back (miss all my friends, my first love, etc). REO's song "Ridin the Storm Out" became my anthem song. There's a part that goes "Thinking about what I've been missing in the city.... and I'm not missing a thing!" Dallas was so flat and boring and I come back to the beauty of central Tx with all of the rivers & my old friends from elementary school. I really wasn't missing a thing.

I was with Gary😇 when he left the band because, although it made a ton of money, "Hi Infidelity" is a piece of crap. I was waiting outside the Tower Records store and bought the first one from the store. I listened to it twice, then mailed it to my 12-year-old sister and told her she's going to love it. When Kevin Cronin ousted Gary because his alcoholism, it tore the hard rock soul out of REO. Kevin favored the soft rock crap, and I kind of gave up on REO once Gary was gone and Kevin's soft crap prevailed. This song is a showcase for just how brilliant Gary's playing and tone defined REO when they really counted.
