As a former naval pilot who has done extensive flying out of GNI to monitor shipping in the 6-degree channel, and even operated out of Campbell bay by ship, I feel the importance of having an airport capable of handling bigger aircraft that are capable of greater surveillance efforts, and a larger seaport that can support bigger naval ships there. But, also as one who has spent 4+ years living in the Andamans, and having seen the devastating effects of rampant tourism in the northern Andaman chain, I cannot help but agree with the opposition to the plans of building an international airport, a full on commercial seaport, and a move of 6.5 lakhs people to that island. The problems here is that we are culturally incapable of being sensitive to the needs of the ecology and to ‘tread lightly’ and the government is historically incapable of maintaining ecological discipline through the rule of law - heck, we can’t even contain reckless driving on our roads. So, yes to a larger airport and seaport, but no to increasing the population and encouraging rampant tourism, which will destroy the island in 5-10 years anyway.
