How anyone can list the three best things about the Smiths and not mention Johnny Marr's guitar playing just makes my head explode!
Ha! I actually address this in my next Smiths video.
@@MusicCatsandCoffee cool - love your reactions btw!
It's a nice change to have the focus all on Andy tho. After 40 yrs I know these songs inside out listening thru her ears Has been fun 😅
Is not the base that she is so enjoying, the base guitar? So, there you go, Johnny is being properly lauded. Thank Yah ABSOLUTELY FABULOUSLY My Darlin Child!!!
True 👍 @@MusicCatsandCoffee
"As the flames rose to her roman nose/ and her walkman started to melt" knocks it out of the park for me. So palpable and stylish at the same time.
Morrissey's lyrics are often hilarious. " What she asked of me at the end of the day, Caligula would have blushed. " 🤣
Yeah, for me the Smiths have a few distinct moods: hilariously darkly sarcastic, hilariously earnestly self-deprecating, brutally depressingly earnest, and storytelling time 😂
Flames rose, roman nose, melting Walkman. We've all been there.
Dark, British humour... you'll get it x
Andy’s bass is great as always but you’re choosing to only focus on it. Marr’s guitar work on this song is otherworldly, especially after the first verse.
Love Johnny’s guitar on this song! He is brilliant and has great collaborations with other bands like Electronic and The The. His solo work is awesome, particularly a song called Hi Hello!
-- yes the guitar is all time great on this sing.
The best of Johnny Marr.
Bass is very good but guitar is stellar!
johnnys guitar work is only now being recognized as influential...we all knew how great he was.
Please, Please, Please… let me get your next Smiths reaction in fewer than four weeks this time
one of the best groups i ever heard! i was in the record store searching for The Smith albums like crazy!
The cat's in the background are cracking me up!!! Brilliant!
You’re spot on with the Morrissey feeling it comment.
Handsome Devil might float your boat, smash in the face from the off with Andy’s bass as a constant rhythm.
They are so different, imagine being a teenager as I was and this band appear from nowhere during the New Romantics era
The Smiths - Shoplifters Of The World Unite
Johnny Marr composed all the music, and his guitar layering / playing is beyond reach. But he mostly took a back seat to Morrisey and Rourke, which is something I admire about Marr.
not a lot of people out there reacting to the smiths, absolutely stoked that you did, also there's a lot of people out there enjoying depressing music, join us :)
I find happy bullshit music more depressing than a lot of artists/bands that get labelled as depressing because it isn't realistic, and I find myself shouting bullshit when I hear optimistic stuff.
Pete Hook of Joy Division is actually the go-to bass player for all the needy peole out there.
As mentioned on The Far Out Playlist about the other voice chiming in on this track: "The band had originally planned to incorporate Kirsty Maccoll onto the track as they thought her vocals would add an extra layer to the song and invited her down to RAK studios to which she obliged. Marr is on record as saying: “That’s the first time we met her. She came down to the studio and put on these really weird harmonies.”
Morrissey and Marr didn’t think her vocals worked on the track so decided to leave it off the final mix and instead Morrissey did the backing vocals in a ‘chipmunk-style’ which he managed to create through the use of a harmoniser. The backing vocals were later comedically credited to ‘Ann Coates’ on the record which is a play on words of the Ancoats area of Manchester." .......Morrissey was reported to have been laughing for quite a long time at the final result.
Morrissey repeating lyrics and just having fun with it was certainly a major trend throughout the majority of the songs with The Smiths. Still a part of his solo career but to a lesser extent. I think you'd really enjoy This Charming Man, not only does it have some seriously funky bass, but it is also one of their most recognizable songs.
Next song...What Difference Does It Make
Enjoy your weekend! 😎
Oh my can't wait... the riff of destiny is incoming
Please, try Reel around the fountain.
I was 13. I liked synthpop. I didn't like The Smiths. But what a song WDDIM was!!
The lyrics. Morrissey is the titular big mouth. "Sweetness" referred to his critics, primarily the music press at the time, who took him to task for supposed controversial comments he'd often make during interviews. It's a faux apology of sorts, poking fun at both himself and the self-righteousness of such critics.
The first two verses are about a playwright who was murdered by his lover I think.
Some of my favorites:
This charming man
Heaven knows I’m miserable now
Cemetery gates
To name a few
Smiths songs i like include, The queen is dead, Well i wonder, Half a person, Asleep, Rusholme ruffians,
Duran Duran, Rio.. Bass is EPICLY EPIC..
Morressey wanted a female backing vocal track but decided he'd do it himself! Came out rather spooky!
Starts off kinda sinister but is a much more bass driven track that their normal rifts.
I've always felt that the angsty, dark humor in the lyrics of many of their songs really hit home if you're a teenager. Or maybe it's a Gen X thing. We were all about the angst back then.
Do ”Still ill”. Thank you
I agree, as a child of the 80s, that the Smiths usually write half a song and then just ride it out.
Speaking of Andy's bass, it is surprising you haven't reacted to "Cemetery gates" yet🙂
"The Boy With the Thorn in His Side" is another great song on 'The Queen is Dead' LP. Other Andy Rourke masterpiece: 'Ask', 'Panic', 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now'....
The boy with a thorn is my favourite song of all time
“That Joke isn’t funny anymore” & “well I wonder” may be tracks you’d like
Love this song! So true the lyrics
How can you possibly call The Smiths background music??! Also....dear Lauren: as awesome as Andy Rourke obviously is (RIP) you can't deny Johnny Marr's guitar awesomeness. That's like...a crime.😅🤗
‘Rank’ versions are my faves of most of these you are listening to 👍
In true British style, the lyrics are ironic/ dark humour… The Smiths are indie (genre wise) probably kick started the modern indie scene… although a lot of tracks cross into different styles (like rockabilly ‘No where, fast’)
I recommend Well I Wonder for the BASS.
1 of my favs is "i know it's over" where Morrissey is more Morrison, and love the moments when they r finally happy, but the next line "it was just a dream" or "only in my head"... 😁
Great reaction as usual. You're ranking sounds perfect, and excellent point about Morrissey sort of feeling it vocally toward the end. My song recommendations are the Queen is Dead, This Charming Man, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before, and Ask.
Morrissey - Suedehead; Morrissey - Every day is like sunday; Smiths Reel around the fountain
Don't forget The Queen is Dead. This song resonated throughout the isles when it really happened.
Respect yourself. Melody, lyrics, bass all there
Do you mean "Accept Yourself"?
The Smiths are my favorite group! This song is definitely the group at their weirdest lol. Basically Morrissey being self aware about how he is kinda dick.
Bjork would be a really interesting artist to react to I think also! She’s my favorite solo artist. Venus as a Boy is a good starting place.
Certain songs I just zoom into the bass and try and follow it through
I never really enjoyed The Smiths until I finally listened closely to the lyrics of "Big Mouth" and realized it's the most flippantly sarcastic song ever (which kinda seems to be sailing past you at the moment, so I guess I wasn't alone). After that it finally all clicked for me. I think before when I had just heard them in passing on the radio I thought it was just happy jangly nonsense (happy because I'd only heard upbeat radio singles and I actually thought "How Soon is Now" was The Cure lmao). (You were asking the genre, it's often called "jangle pop", or just the burgeoning genre of indie rock via Manchester)
Andy Rourke's bass is undeniably great, but tossing aside Johnny Marr's guitar is pure insanity. But if you're just more into bass as an instrument overall that makes sense.
But anyway after this song finally opened my eyes I was a Smiths lover for the rest of my life. Sucks that Moz is a total right wing piece of shit now, but The Smiths are too incredible to be retroactively ruined by that.
Hi! Been enjoying your Smiths reactions. I myself recently discovered them while I was homebound during the pandemic. Discovered them on You Tube and was hooked after How Soon is Now. Great guitar riff by Johnny Marr, haunting like. I do agree with your love for Andy’s bass. So sad he passed away earlier this year. Very underrated imo. RIP Andy. Listen to The Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore. The lyrics hit home. Oh and Some Girls are Bigger than Others is soo good. Johnnys guitar is amazing . Have a nice day Lauren ( is that how you spell it?) I love cats and coffee too! What’s your kittys name? So adorable 🐱
RIP Andy Rourke- A GREAT Bassist.
The voice: Joan of arc heard voices. Also refers to Walkman and hearing aid
Andy Rourke was the bass - RIP buddy and thank you xxx
Bass appreciation - finally :)
I wouldn't take the lyrics too seriously.
The weird vocal thing is Morrissey's voice fed thru a pitch shifter, up one octave.
You do know that rock is sometimes satirical and parodic and filled with inversions? See Ghost. For Madchester also see Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets. One, by the way, might argue that some early Echo and the Bunnymen songs (especially "Do it Clean" gave birth to Madchester. And that might seem odd to some given that EatB are a Merseyside band.
The most talented member of the Smiths is Johnny Marr.
The high pitched backing vocalist, ‘Ann Coats’, is Morrissey sped up. The Ancoats shopping centre in Manchester may have provided inspiration
This was the 80s, women loved being stalked, and feeling the danger of the night, if you know what i mean. It was more talk, no bite.
Niche pick for the next, Handsome Devil off Hatful of Hollow. She'd love the bass and unhinged Morissey
Totally with you about Andy's bass. Andy is the closest thing I've ever had to a musical idol. I loved the album Hatful of Hollow, because if you opened it up it had a picture of the band with Andy at the front, looking cool AF with his bass. I started listening to The Smiths around 1985, which was when I had my musical awakening as a teenager, and when the band was still active. The only band I listened more to was Echo & the Bunnymen, and still do occasionally. You should check them out too, if you haven't already.🙂
4:30-ish I think he's saying that he's sorry for what he said, but that he can't really help himself.
Love Andy
Those lyrics were interesting
But Johnny Marr has one of the most iconic guitar riffs in all of alternative music. So switching Johnny off is difficult for me and I don't wish to tune him out.
Idk, I like to focus to specific layers of the song too, but It's never just bass for me, I like to go back and examine the drums, or guitar or vocals specifically, over time
You know what the best Smiths song is, one which also has an awesome bassline? "What difference does it make" 🤣 FML!
Edit: Yes, I also focus on the bass, but then again I am a Bassist, however Johnny Marr is one of the best Guitarists of the 80s, so while it is good you do, unlike most people, concentrate on the bass, don't just disregard the guitar as being an also ran. All 4 members are doing incredible shit!
Andy is amazing.
I listen to bass and drums more than other instruments. Try the band Morphine. No guitar. Bass and sax and drums. You will like!!!!!
You're correct to zero in on Andy......Atrue genius. Remember to credit the other three because this band is truly one of the greatest
Esta rola me suena endemoniada 🫢
Marr wrote allll the music. RIP Andy.
Listen to Jeane by The Smiths, for all your BASS needs!!
Yes, I am an eloquent... But not in the "right way". - And for this... I'm the 'Antichrist', too. Hahah. Maybe that explains (if any need to be explained...) this song.
I was thinking about your obsession with bass and I believe Bruce Foxton from the jam to be one of the best so maybe you would try down in the tube station at midnight from them darling 😊
When you say the bass you sound like borat. The bass, yes
This night has opened my eyes if you like to hear Andy’s base 😊
Accept yourself...I meant
He just keeps putting his mouth in it. Morrissey just says what he wants which is why he's controversial.
Me inside Slipknot reaction, hurry
If you're tuning out guitar ( I do that to some things) you have to try to learn to notice it. try to notice everything going on.
Very kind friend, here is a key to reading this lyric. Very often Morrissey's lyrics are bipolar, i.e. there are two characters: A) the protagonist (usually himself) and B) the antagonist (who in this song could be the English press who at the time had him accused of everything, even of pedophilia in the song Reel Around The Fountain).
Try re-reading the text according to this scheme:
B)
Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking
When I said I'd like to smash every tooth
In your head
Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking
When I said by rights you should be
Bludgeoned in your bed
A)
And now I know how Joan of Arc felt
Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
As the flames rose to her Roman nose
And her walkman started to melt
Bigmouth
Bigmouth
Bigmouth strikes again
And I've got no right to take my place
To the human race
Seems so silly to restrict stuff to a Bass.
Johnny Fucking Marr
Morrissey turned out to be a problematic incel TERF, but the man can write a good song
last night i dreamt, that somebody loved me. girl afraid. this charming man. the queen is dead. girlfriend in a coma. please please please let me get what i want. i know its over. the boy with the thorn in his side. unlovable. asleep
please save your life & do This Night Has Opened My Eyes
in 10 years you will ask yourself: "why didn't I spend my time then in learning REAL things to get a REAL job instead of listening to music I didn't understand and tell everyone that I didn't understand". 99% on YT is ridiculous and senseless. Like this channel...
Is this a bit? cause it sucks
You're most three interesting things don't involve Johnny Marr? You are Smithing wrong.
