In the 16th century, Osijek became strategically important, and the fortress now known as Tvrđa was built in the 18th century, representing one of the most prominent symbols of the city.
The Osijek Co-Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, built in the Neo-Gothic style, is an important spiritual and architectural symbol of Osijek. This impressive church, the second most important in the Archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek, dominates the city skyline with its tall towers and attests to a rich religious tradition.
Unfortunately, during the Homeland War from 1991 to 1998, Osijek was subjected to heavy bombardments and shelling. The city was attacked by Serbian soldiers, and many of its neighborhoods were devastated. During this difficult period, the residents of Osijek showed incredible resilience and courage, fighting for their freedom and survival. Numerous symbols of resistance and bravery, such as churches and other buildings, survived this war and today tell stories of the past and the courage of the people who lived here.
Today, Osijek is filled with vibrant parks and promenades along the Drava River, where you can enjoy walks and relax in nature. The city has come alive through various cultural events, such as the Osijek Summer, which celebrates Slavonian customs and the richness of culture. Additionally, the city is known for its beautiful bridges and well-tended flower beds, making this part of Croatia even more appealing.
