Another thing to consider here is that Neo never had much choice in anything, yes this is a theme of the films about society in general, but Neo in particular has the LEAST freedom of choice out of anybody. He is the product of everybody's expectations.

If breaking the Architect's balls makes you a villain. Then yes.
I disagree with this theory.
1- Neo killed those humans because he had no choice. When normal humans come across anomalies like Neo, Trinity and Morpheus who have "super powers" within the Matrix, it is a matter of seconds for the agents to detect the location of the human who saw this anomaly and take possession of their bodies. Neo didn't have time to enter the building subtly, so those lives had to be sacrificed.
2- Neo chooses Trinity over humanity because that's human, that's an obvious human choice, and the Architect made that very clear when Neo made his choice. Any of us humans would choose a great love than anyone else to save, that's human. Neo's anger at having to make this choice is visible when he tells the Architect that it was better if they didn't meet again. This shows that he had an appreciation for humanity.
Being chosen to lead a people to freedom requires sacrifices, sacrifices that Neo was aware he would need to make if he wanted to free humans from being slaves to machines.
We used to love super heroes but now we understand villains
The villain is just a hero with a difference of opinion.

There weren't 7 NEOs. Only 1 Neo. There were 7 different anomalies, people that were different at different times that carried the program of THE ANOMALY. One person would have the program. After that person died the program would be picked up by someone else to carry during that person's lifetime. Neo was one of them. And the last one so far.
Imagine the pressure to "save humanity." I'd probably say fuggit, too.
I think Smith will try a different approach to rebellion now after his last failure.

The version of Neo we see is not a villain. The One was programmed as a tool with a certain purpose. The Neo we see though falls in love with Trinity, changing him. He no longer just resists the agents and continues the cycle but has agency. He chooses Trinity, he chooses personal love, and through this and other choices saves what is left of humanity.
Plus, I don't see the point of "not destroying the Matrix" as a negative. In actuality, destroying the Matrix would have most likely doomed humanity, as the real earth would have never provided sufficient resources for even a fraction of them. Billions would have died in misery, most probably.
It's hard to tell the difference between heroes and villains this days

In a war, hero and villain are created due to perceptions based in the interests of the parties involved. The simulation named “I am legend” explains it well

That was the point of Neo, Neo's Singularity or what machine error he solved was love. Every previous iteration of the One experienced Love in a generic way for the whole race not one human.
It is kinda silly and ham handed though. Have the machines not seen a human raise a child? The only way they can "solve love" is by observing Neo and Trinity?
Also this is made even worse in the sequels, when Ramacandra lectures Neo about love. Apparently the machines knew the answer already but the architect was not informed of this or had no way to work with it?

the machines are trying to be more human somehow, maybe that's why they have humans plugged, they can't totally get rid of their dependency on the human brain because they don't understand everything it is capable of.
machines were created by the rational part of the human brain, and it totally doesn't understand the other parts.
maybe that's how the war ends, when both machines and humans finally merge, because one need the other, thus the machine has to become more human, as the humans become more machine.
The room with the architect was a timeless room. If you look at the screens, you see Trinity fighting the agent in different time sequences. The room is a trap between the source and the end of Zion. The Architect should have been the target from the jump. Neo should have fought and destroyed the architect and took control of the matrix. This is why Neo said to the architect before he left that "I hope we don't see each other again." That was a threat to the architect.
If Neo would have defeated the architect, he still could have saved Trinity and shut down the machines. Instead it led Neo to fight Smith for the machines. The Architect manipulated Neo with the illusion of choice which only led to chaos. Neo's choice only benefited the machines.
@@hstone39lol no, the room was similar to the train man construct, you don’t think a machine a.i. would have contingency plans? He would have never been able to lay a finger on him and the architect also technically wasn’t there, he is basically an admin/owner of the server.
@@Junuman1 But for that exact reason, Neo is the only one that can enter that room. No one else in the matrix including the agents can enter that room. That room was very real and wasn't some type of illusion. The architect is as real as the Oracle, which is why you see them together at the end of the 3rd movie.
What if neo created the matrix and forgot. The integral anomaly sounds like he is a necessity and if he cease so does everything and why the machines themselves are connected to him.. even the deus machine had to strike a deal.
that's totally the thing I would do if I had the capacity of creating a Matrix in my computer, I would copy part of myself on it so I could regain control. Not even the programs running inside it would know about the integral part of it.
you can be as smart as the entire universe and still you can't beat hidden variables (which is why quantum physics doesn't work and yet still refuses to "believe" there is hidden variables). its there in the equations and there's no way for a program to observe the host hardware if the host of the virtualization doesn't want it to observe the hardware.

The true villain of The Matrix is the same as the Star Wars franchise. Joseph Campbell in The Hero with a Thousand Faces argued at the book's conclusion that the hero's ultimate purpose was to gain insight on how to resolve two apparently incompatible dualities and bring that message back to his or her people to accept or reject. Neither franchise has the slightest idea or willingness to resolve their essential dualities.

The argument is the equivalent of saying that a hammer , car or cat can be the true villain of the matrix.
If he was unknowingly a part of subjugation of the Matrix, he was not the villain.
This whole ridiculous theory about Neo being the villain must have come out of the Reddit hole 🤣
Villainy is relative. A villain is nothing more than someone who labors against your cause. More specifically, they are those who fight against the prevailing system. That is exactly what Neo was doing. Yet, this is the same thing freedom fighters do. The point is, one man's villain is another man's freedom fighter, or as Alexandre Dumas stated, and I quote the film adaptation, "Treason is a matter of dates."

Always thought that line about repairing Neo and Trinity being “crazy expensive” was stupid. So the machines now need to pay for materials, and wages to the other machines that rebuilt them. Why would money or expense mean anything to AI
I think the term crazy expensive it’s used to explain to the viewers but what that means is it took a lot of energy in which the machines need in order to stay alive!! I think.
I’m reminded of when Neil Patrick Harris was in How I Met Your Mother, he referred to Bruce Willis as the “Bad Guy in Die Hard” which makes it come full circle in “Resurrections” 😅😂
Neo is a reset program. When he fights a higher program linked with the matrix and wins the matrix resets
It would be interesting if Agent Smith: was taking over as many clients as possible to save them from Neo… to send them to the new version of the Matrix; before the current version crashed… and the final battle with Smith broke the physics system enough, that it finally crashed the old version, allowing the new version to start…
That would make Neo and Smith both a required part of a system, with their mutual destruction always required to crash the system.
The One is an antagonist for mankind, but Neo is a hero for the free minds.
Evil is just a word, it's the meaning you put to it that matters.

Like the Riddler in that newer Batman movie, he was exposing corruption in the system and targeting horrible people. He was doing the wrong thing, for the right reasons

Agent Smith was the anomaly, and the matrix created Neo to stop him from destroying it.
In The Matrix, Morpheus tells Neo about "the One", the savior described in the prophecy. According to Morpheus, the founder of Zion was the very first person to wake up from the Matrix simulation. Morpheus believed that person to have been the first and only “One,” and that Neo would be the second. Morpheus was not aware, however, that there had actually been five Ones before Neo. Between the first One waking up from the Matrix and Neo’s story in The Matrix, four other cycles had taken place. It must also be noticed that the prophecy described by Morpheus was fabricated by the machines, as the One was part of the Matrix’s equation all along.
Maybe this is true, also i think Neo is a hero, because he fights villains, he can´t be like them, but a hero, in the film.
Neo is the villain if you on the side of the matrix so technically yes he is the villain along with all who are awake.😅 Kind of like wanting the heel to win but the Babyface gets the accolades and development. Smith was just a long for the ride.
This theory is absolutely fun to mess around with, but the only way this theory could possibly hold any kind of water is if we ignore absolutely everything that actually occurred in the film and that we learned later on through rewatching them. We learned and understand that Neo was being used and directed, and if he hadn’t fell in love, he wouldn’t have been able to disrupt the entire system of control..

To be a villain one must make plans for villainy. You can't be an unaware villain that's called a pawn. Pawns have no control over their actions or the consequences of said actions because they aren't the hidden hand moving pieces around.
Villains plot villainous plots
If one does not plot villainous plots then one is not a villain and you need to find a more accurate term.
I'm the only person in Hollywood who has a fully written spec script for the Matrix 5, The Matrix Regenerated. It has taken years to get Lana Wachowski on board the concept of a much more futuristic setting. The script has been screen recorded and uploaded on my RUclips channel.

@7:12 So, you are saying Smith was not aware of the fact that ZION was destroyed six times but knows that there were previous versions of the Matrix (which he talks about with the sedated Morpheus while trying to extract password of ZION’s mainframe)?
I believe the architect reset the agents' minds in each simulation; they must fulfill their roles in the theater. Smith thought the only way to escape the matrix was by destroying Zion, but Zion's destruction does not depend on the agents; it depends on the path of the anomaly, as explained by the architect in Matrix 2. Smith's lack of understanding of Neo and his surprise at Neo's resurrection indicate that he had never interacted with one of his predecessors.This leads me to think that Smith didn't know that Zion was part of a cycle, and in that case, it was the sixth version. Smith knew about the existence of previous simulations because he had to hunt down the exiled programs, but I don't think he knew everything that was happening behind the scenes. However, this is a good topic for a video.
The UNKNOWING is the perfect description. He'd have to not know because the choices he makes are generally based on human moral and ethical values aren't they? It's part of his code. It's his intention. So is he unknowingly used as a lab rat to test new and updated programs efficacy? It makes sense. Being a villain is subjective, some can base that label on the causality of his decisions and not his purpose or objective
question is, at what point does Neo v1 - v6 know they are just another asset of the machines, "our" Neo, we'll call v7, even after choosing to Trinity over returning to the source then and there, still ended up returning to the source, still had his code update the Matrix. so even if he seemed to have gone in a different path than his past versions, it still came to pass that the one returned to the source, and a new version of the Matrix was patched, we don't know if The Matrix looks like the Mega City we see in the first 3 movies, or if the new version looks like the more modern day city we see in the the 4th movie, but I'm going to say the new version of the matrix is the one we see in Resurrections, like I still like to think of the nightmare matrix looking something like Dark City.
what I'm trying to get at is, to be a true villain there needs to be intent, Neo as the 1 up to a point, was unaware of his part in the plot, and it wasn't until the oracle got Trinity involved in Neo's love for the continued survival of humanity, shifted to his singular love for Trinity, did his actions change. Neo v1 to v6 aren't Villainous, more as just another control system and tool used by the system. not sure how one would feel if say Win32.dll suddenly said changed it's programing because PowerTools said "isn't MS Paint cute, you two look cute together have a cookie"
I want to know why they don't just clone Neo. They could have easily. They "grew" him new eyes essentially so they are more than capable of copy/paste body parts, why not a whole body. They can tap into brain functions and read the mind even take it over. No reason they could not copy/paste his brain and "code" also. If the reason he is "the one" is down to a unique identifier in a database. Let's say each person has a set number and whoever gets the lucky number is "the one" due to a bug occurring at that point, (a bit like the year 2000 y2k millennium bug) and this can only happen once per cycle. Then this "bug" could be fixed as it's a known point. The machine's could simply fix it and forget about "the one" ever happening again and have all problems solved. The fact this has not happened tells me that the machines could indeed make an infinite number of "the one" if they wanted.

Not sure hes a villain, but being perhaps necessary to keep the matrix running sounds sick. Hes still a "anomaly". He kind of keeps the balance. But programs like Smith, or Marovignian, the Analyst keep the Matrix at bay...

The Machines took on that Human trait of the prisoner called Mr. Anderson and exploited it to the max (remember after the Machines won the war, they experimented with Human prisoners. That's why I believe M.5 eill touch on Renaissance too 😊
This is the only argument that can suport that Zion was indeed in the real world, because an AI that complex would implement a firewall to contain any scape, this is a alread used protect system on computers, the AI would adpted this idea for they energy system, as well as a redundace energy source, likewise we have today on Computer Servers.
The word you want is pawn not villain (those are the machines), and yes, that's my theory too, although I think Smith was the true hero and the only one capable of destroying the matrix

Neo unconsciously followed Trinity and Morpheus because he hadn't yet been shown what the matrix was, the oracle and archtiect use the integral anomoly as a useful idiot because he is still naive but I think the ending of resurrections shows us that trin and neo realize they are clones "with another chance, they thought they would never have".
Rebuilding Neo and Trinty was "Crazy Expensive", what was the expense, humans?
I disagree he fulfilled every prophecy but destroying the matrix. But that’s what resurrections was for to show once “the one” was complete they could destroy it and like they said at the end of matrix resurrections they were given a second chance.

Maybe... I dont think he works for the machines, While the machines may know how to influence him and nudge him, in the end, Neo Offered to save them from Smith. Neo Walked away from the reset that woulda wiped smith before he got to the Oracle and got way outta control. The Merrovingian never hinted at it either. Maybe most cycles Neo did as suggested, but not so sure matrix 3 went how the machines predicted.... But yeah, possble

you could also say that Neo is the reluctant hero figure of the matrix to give people of the matrix false hopes and force to fulfill a delusional destiny that only exists because people believe it to be real on both sides of the fence.
