  • Welcome to the Voice of America’s News Words.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was recently sworn in as president of the Philippines.
    EMULATE
Marcos Jr.’s inauguration came 36 years after his father, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., was ousted as president for his human rights abuses and corruption. In his speech, Marcos Jr. called for unity, defended his father’s rule and added that he would emulate him.
To emulate is to try to be like someone that you respect or believe is successful at something. Sometimes people seek to do even better than those they emulate.

Here is my advice for you on how to use our web-based courses.
To start out, you may want to test your ability with this quick test: learningenglish.voanews.com/a/4272901.html
Then you can try our courses online. All of our materials are free and you can download the audio and video to use offline.
At the top of the home page, learningenglish.voanews.com/ choose a level. We have Beginning Level, Intermediate, and Advanced.
At the beginning level, you can try reading the stories and watching the videos.
If your score on the test was under B1, try our 52- week course, “Let’s Learn English.” Here is the link to it: learningenglish.voanews.com/p/5644.html
Here is Lesson 1 of Let’s Learn English level 1: learningenglish.voanews.com/a/lets-learn-english-lesson-one/3111026.html
My advice is to watch the three videos you see on the page, then try the quiz which to see how much you understand. Practice the conversation with a friend or family member.
The words and worksheet are in a pdf you can download from the top of the page in both Level 1 and Level 2.
Keep going, doing a lesson or two a week depending on how much time you have. After Lesson 52, there is a certificate you can print out.
If these lessons seem too easy for you, go on to the next level.
If your score was B2 or above, try “ Let’s Learn English 2,” which has 30 lessons. learningenglish.voanews.com/p/6765.html
For either course, you can practice the conversations with a friend or a family member. If that is not possible, try joining a service that matches conversation partners. Here is an article we wrote on that topic. Five Tips for Great Language Exchanges. learningenglish.voanews.com/a/five-tips-for-great-language-exchanges/5175780.html
