Any other new subscribers watching this after Shannon mentioned getting a nice letter from Steve Payne? I think Shannon is a joy fairy, sprinkling excitement, happiness, and contentment throughout the lands. ;-)
Love it ! Payne won me a Cup pool with that big playoffs he had that year! Shannon... how about a "Worst NHL CheapShot Artists of All Time" episode (starring Dale Hunter, etc)?
Al MacAdam was one of the underrated fighters from his time in the league. He didn't fight much, as you can see if you look at his PIM totals, but when he was challenged, he could really throw 'em. And a good all around player on top of that.
Steve Payne is an excellent choice for a Career video montage.. Another one that should be recognized from that era: Pierre Mondou Keep it up Shannon 😎
That early 80's North Stars team had the makings of a fantastic club with Hartsburgh,Payne, Smith, Ciccarelli, Bellows etc. A shame they were overshadowed by the Isles and Oilers
Loved the NHL in the early 80's Steve Payne was an underrated player!! They had a great young team back then!! Finals against maybe the greatest team of all time though .... Bossy & company l!!
I remember his first game in the NHL....he crossed the blueline and wired it top shelf on his first shift then did the same again on his second shift....after that he was closely checked.
You must be thinking of another game. He didn't score any goals in his first NHL game. His first goal came in his 17th career game. His first 2-goal game came in his 54th career game.
Memory plays tricks when you get older. I always remember Steve Payne scoring 5 goals against the Rangers. This was returning a favor from a couple of years before when Don Murdoch scored 5 against the North Stars. So I looked it up. Turns out Payne never scored 5 goals in a game vs. anyone. It was Tim Young who had a five goal game vs. the Rangers. Payne & Young are kind of easy to get mixed up. Both tall, lanky guys with similar builds, good scorers. Payne did have a hat trick vs. the Rangers, but not 5 goals.
Minnesota vs. Boston in the first round reminds me of the NHL's divisions had almost nothing to do with geography back then. The Norris was Montreal, L.A., Pittsburgh, Hartford, and Detroit. Before the merger with the WHA, they had Washington in there as well.
So sad how they treated head injuries. Have you seen the documentary on Joe Murphy? Last seen homeless on the streets of Kenora in Northern Ontario. Ex Leaf Trevor Kidd and another journalist went looking for him. Excellent watch. I’m sure if you just search Joe Murphy documentary it will come up. Cheers Edit: I looked it up and is a W5 segment called The Rise and Fall of a Stanley Cup champion. The journalist working along with Kidd happens to be Mr Westhead, who was so great during the Kyle Beach story.
I'm glad your doing north stars If you could talk about the most penalties in one game. 406 still a record Between Boston also the goldy shuffle Bill Goldsworthy well I could go on and on thank you you're the best Denny from Minnesota
we all love these forgotten players and journeymen career videos, you have done everybody else so it is nice to see how good these guys were even if it was over a short period. oh wait what's that? you havent done everybody else? there is one guy in the top 50 all time scoring that you left out? and he is pretty high on that list? now I am not his biggest fan, I just find it odd that he is left out and am wondering if you just hate that one player.
Dale Hunter was a complete shit, but he was a player completely of his time. You can't judge the NHL of then by today's standards, and if you do you're foolish.
I don't remember where I heard this. Assistant coach: "Coach, Bobby got his bell rung and can't remember his name." Coach: "Tell him he's Wayne Gretzky and send him back out."
I wish we could combine the policy of having enforcers in the league like in the 80s with a removal of the instigator rule and our current policy toward concussion protocol. I think we'd see far fewer long term injuries. Obviously, hockey is and should always be a physical, contact sport, so you'll never completely remove risk from the game, but clearly the way we're doing things with the exception of concussion protocol is not working. There were major, career ending injuries in the 80s and early 90s, even to star players, and this is a good example. But I think if we knew more about how serious concussions and injuries to the head and neck are back then, guys like Steve Payne and Pat LaFontaine would have faired far better. You're never going to completely remove risk from the game, even if you banned body checks altogether, but there's always more you can do to make the game safer for guys who don't play a physical game and didn't sign up to get hit in the head.
It seemed the North Stars and Blues were forever playing each other in the playoffs. Three game seven overtimes from 1968 to 1984. Fierce rivalry. And speaking of GM Lou Nanne, when he retired as a player in 1978 North Stars longtime trainer Doc Rose paid him the ultimate left handed compliment by saying Louie played longer with the least amount of talent than anyone he had ever seen. How about a video on Trail, B.C. native Caesar Maniago who was the North Stars original goalie after the 1967 expansion.
Or maybe backup goaltender Carl Wetzel? Yeah, he only played a handful of games, but he did rent a duplex in our neighborhood and made this 8 year-old happy when he brought home practice sticks with Cullen, Connelly and Woytowich stenciled on them.
I think a good retrospective would be Mario Tremblay. Sadly only known for the Roy ordeal instead of being a part of one of the all time best 3rd lines in NHL history
Coupled with a "Max Payne" and/or "Major Payne" movie review you could've maximized your time and did both an Entertainment Guy and Hockey Guy Video in one.
Payne is still right NHL still cannot market itself well at all. Why would you go from a network with more exposure in the states (NBC) to cable only letting fewer potential fans see the game. Still short sighted management after all these years and making the same mistakes.
Well, they get exposure on multiple cable networks (conceivably four: ESPN, ESPN2, TNT, TBS) as opposed to now-extinct NBCSN and then the NBC family during playoffs in Round 1 and maybe 2. They're getting a comparable number of games on ABC relative to NBC, albeit maybe fewer. And then they extended streaming to basically all Disney-owned platforms and might have been one more in there. They're also getting wayyy more money than NBC offered. So I think it is hard to argue they botched the TV deals. The CTE issue, though? Absolutely. I am shocked that the reckoning hasn't come.
@@joeroganreal Don't you just love it when people have to toot their own horn in someone else's video for really doing nothing? That's something I used to do as a kid. We'd all try to get to the front of a line and push and shove each other to get there. I remember that happened a lot when the outdoor swimming pool opened in the morning. Kids would be sitting on benches outside and the moment some old fart with keys showed up and opened the door, kids would be pushing and shoving to be first in line, as if it really mattered. You see that a lot when there's a traffic jam. People deke into the other lane and try to cut in and get ahead of everyone else. At that point, you're not just an idiot, you're a complete jerk, slowing down traffic even further.

I was part of the “who?” audience, but thanks a lot Shannon for doing the videos of players who deserve more love than they actually get!
I re-watched this video after Steve Payne wrote to you to compliment you for doing a career video on him.
Always learn something new from THG!
THG taught me about Payne.
I must've missed this, just saw your video where you said you received a letter from him. Good Job Shannon!
There it is!!! Luv that Jersey!
Love the North Stars gear!
Love it ! Payne won me a Cup pool with that big playoffs he had that year! Shannon... how about a "Worst NHL CheapShot Artists of All Time" episode (starring Dale Hunter, etc)?
Great video. Al MacAdam was also a key player on those Northstar teams. Id like to see a Mike Sillinger video if you haven't done one yet

Good call on Mondou.
1981 he was tied with Bossy for most goals with 17. Only Bossy had more points, 35.
I always remember him scoring the OT winner in game seven against the Blues in the 84 Norris Division finals. Argggg!!!😁
apparently mr. payne has seen this video.
Hakan Loob career video please!

Once again Dale Hunter is the reaperman for another unsuspecting career.
One of my all time favorite north stars
Going to get to the 81 north stars soon, so excited to see this man at his best.
Wow interesting video! 👍 great pick to talk about
Teammate of Bobby Smith on the Ottawa 67's

Love that North Stars sweater. I think that version was their best ever.
I always thought his brother Max was going to have a better career.
Nice
Well played!
I had the same thought on Sam Steel
Steve was a solid clutch North Star!
Joel Ward career video please
