Exploring the scars left by D-Day along Juno Beach

When Allied troops, including 14,000 Canadian soldiers, launched a major invasion of Nazi-occupied France, it marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War.
However, D-Day siege left many of the communities that were liberated scarred with remnants from that battle.
As Jeff Semple explains, their war wounds have become unofficial monuments to the soldiers' sacrifice.

My great uncle was wounded on the beach, it is wonderful that they have saved this heritage for folks to remember and enjoy.

I first visited Normandy in 1969 and then many of the gun positions and fortifications were abandoned. I went back there about the 75th anniversary and quite a number had been renovated. I hesitate to say they've been turned into tourist attractions but there was certainly more to see.

My father was in the invasion of Saipan, all signs of the invasion have been moved or totally removed as the signs of the battle offended the Japanese tourists.
