Your videos are hidden gems I’m so grateful I found you through alone! I do hope you get more popular so you can make more money but I am so happy to have just found you just shows me that there are so many smaller channels out there that have incredible content and authenticity.
Thank you Violet :)! What an amazing thing to say (not the money thing - haha - but the other thing). I am so glad you enjoy my videos :). I have such fun making them!
I use to fly out of Port Hardy to the main land where the fastest water in BC is can't remember the nsme havevit on file somewhere I serviced the RVs in a camp Chris from Roadex Construction they are Logging Road Builders did his RVs in the winter that was my Holidays and then back to work her in Courtenay serving Rvs and towing and setting them up for a Rv Rental Company loved it
Amanda n' Buttercup !!!! Sooooo enchanting , I'm soooo Happy for you two !!! You've got the right attitude and wonderful Life !!!/ Thanks for sharing you adventure !!!! Cheers, Thom Mack n' Ginger Dog .
Hi Carol, thank you for the lovely compliment. I still have so much to learn about filming and editing, but it sure it fun doing it :). Thank you for watching!
Hi Amanda, Wow, those opening drone shots were so beautiful and great music in the background. But, it just kept getting better, the lighting on those shots with the picnic table... beautiful. I've been waiting for your next installment and am happy to hear that things are good! There must be a little bit of apprehension going into a situation with a few unknowns like that. Chopping some wood. Nothing wrong with that. Great exercise! Yikes, OK get those fingers out of the way! One thing that works is take another piece of wood to lean the piece you are chopping on, against to hold it up. Anything but, get those fingers and hands out of the way! I'm seeing improved wood chopping technique in the latter shots :) It looks like an amazing place. Happy to hear and see that it is good! I hope Buttercup is adjusting to warmer cabin temps. Great episode!
Yah, I've watched a few RUclips videos on chopping kindling... maybe I should watch them again :)... ha ha! The sunset here is the best time to take drone footage... when there is little to no cloud of course... I'm like a kid in a candy store, there is just so much beauty to shoot!
Wow, Great way to spend the winter. Love all the pics. You might want to spend some time when you are sitting at the campfire in the evenings with a file sharpening those axes. I like to keep mine sharp enough to shave with
Enjoy your new surroundings. Looks so peaceful and beautiful. How cool to see whales so close by. For sure You will get better with practice on that axe. Love me some wood heat in the winter. Stay warm.
Oh I am going to be a regular lumberjack in a few months - ha ha :)!!! A girl can dream!! Yes, I am very luck to be able to see whales all day long... Yesterday I saw 4 breaches within a span of 15 minutes (I got one on my cell phone, but it doesn't look very good - dang!) and then saw a pod of orcas in the afternoon. It's incredible. Rumour has it they are leaving end of October though.
Spectacular countryside! The Pacific Northwest is truly one of the most beautiful places in the world and sometimes we take it for granted. Watching your videos is a reminder of just how special this area is. The humpbacks on your doorstep was so thrilling and a pleasant surprise! Stay safe, stay warm and stay grounded (hehehe). Hugs to you and Buttercup ❤️
Couldn't agree more! The islands up north here are beautiful... there is nothing else like 'em! Yesterday I saw 4 humpbacks breach within a span of 15 minutes... and then a pod of orcas in the afternoon. Amazing :)!
What a fantastic opportunity and place to spend the winter. You'll want to make time for routine boat upkeep assuming you will keep Ananda at the dock. A boat doesn't like to be neglected. Cheers Amanda.
Now about that wood chopping, make sure you are standing with your legs spread, so that if the axe flies trough it ends up in the ground between your legs rather then in one of them. See if the blocks will stand up by themselves and give them one good whack in stead of having your hand on the block and tapping the top of the block. Its the impulse that splits the wood rather then the blade of the axe.
Spectacular drone intro scene ! So nice had to watch it twice lol You hit the jackpot spot for the winter - looks pretty amazing ! Is there a trail system on the property for hiking - you could show us ? That speed boat looks like fun ! See you next time
hello :)! i do love it... buttercup and i will see you up here next summer (or maybe spring!). i am pretty excited to do some exploring. i can't stop thinking about you guys preserving kelp... haha!!! i literally was thinking about it about 20 minutes ago :). i just can't imagine what it would taste like :).
I’m so happy for you and it looks absolutely gorgeous there ! I spent a couple of years off grid living in the kootenanys with wood heat and absolutely loved it .
Oh wow! I have never been to the Kootenays... maybe someday! I am constantly amazed at how cozy wood heat is. Sitting by the woodstove, and reading a book with hot chocolate in hand... life couldn't get any better :)!
Lovely place. You don't want to move the boat to the other side of the dock, so shes pushed away from the dock when the waves come in there? I imagine it could get pretty scetchy grinding on the outside of the dock. Your fenders look pretty small.
I'd rather the boat be pulling away from the dock as opposed to 'banging' into it. The gusts are very powerful and the chances of my boat getting damaged would be much higher on the south side. If we get a big north wind then I would for sure move it over :). There are some really big 'hidden' fenders lower down, tied to the dock itself :).
So glad you are doing well there. I live on my boat on the southern tip of vancouver island, and I would love to caretake a property. Do you have any tips on how to find a property to look after?
Hi Jon, I found this amazing gig by posting a 'wanted' ad on Facebook and it was seen by someone who connected me with this family. I should also note I had done this before on Toba Inlet so I did have a bit of experience. I think if you just keep spreading the word... letting people know it's something your interested in and word will get around. It might be a good idea to head north perhaps in the summer as there seems to be a bit more opportunity up this way b/c of how remote it is. You might also want to contact a few First Nations Bands in the north as many of them have remote fishing lodges that need caretaking in the winter. Hope that helps :).
sort of. bears aren't often seen on this island. the owners did see a black bear during the summer. he (or she) swam from another island to this one. he landed on shore right in front of them but took off into the forest. they never saw her again. there is always a chance grizzlies/cougars/black bears will swim over. most bears will hibernate in a few weeks or so anyway :). apparently, there are deer here.
So glad I found your videos. I spent four summers in the Brougtons. If I still had my boat, I would join you for a time. My email is the same as six years or so ago. Please contact me if you can.
I know this video is a few years old, but the way you are chopping kindling is not safe. Never strike near where your hand is. A better technique is the lay the firewood across another log, hold onto it from the bottom and hit it with the axe on the other end. There was a woman on a TV show that was doing it like this that cut her hand badly and even severed a nerve.
it's okay :). that axe is so dull it couldn't cut jello :). i have hit my finger once and i got a small bruise, nothing too bad. both axes in the woodshed are kept very dull for safety reasons. i have another hatchet in my cabin that is very sharp and you would never catch me splitting kindling with it!

Every time I see Buttercup on your videos I feel the loss of my own dogs - I sure do miss them. You have a great taste in music.

Looks like the wood is turning from big blocks to little blocks. Not much else you need to worry about.
Nothing to worry about up here 😀
