Yay, I live in Ontario so there’s a chance of power outage from extreme weather events like winter storms ice storms hail sleet tornadoes downdrafts and other wind storms and forest fires or floods but we avoid the worst of the tropical storms that hit eastern Canada and USA and we don’t get bad earthquakes like the west coast gets, and so as long as the house is on a high point in the landscape to avoid flooding and there’s a way to get power backup for the electricity in an emergency then the only thing to worry about is an “act of god” like an out of control wildfire sweeping through town or a tornado or downdraft taking the whole house away or crushing the house, so even with the increasing number of tornadoes and wildfires in the last decade I like my chances of avoiding major catastrophes where I live and the forests and lakes are gorgeous and make the weather feel a lot nicer than it actually is sometimes because they create little microclimates around themselves.

If you decide on pothos, be sure to quarantine the plant, spray it down with insecticidal soap and maybe even change the soil- they can easily carry mealy bugs that you won't find until months later when they come out of hiding in all the little nooks between the leaves

Heart shaped pothos, (any pothos really if you want a trailing/climbing plant), spider plants are okay but sometimes are picky with water (use that water change you were going to dump!) Monstera Deliciosa (if looking for a "statement plant") A good plan for any "easy care" plant is anything with darker leaves like your ZZ

I also think everyone should have a Monstera just because they're awesome and who can beat the name Monstera deliciosa?
And there's a bunch of cool newer cultivars of Philodendron that have radical variegation! Like dark pine green with half the leaf lime green and little white stripes. Very cool!

QOTW: Best houseplant imo is a christmas cactus. They're really easy to take care of, and they grow quickly if you keep the conditions right. They can get quite droopy depending on how large they get, and they have gorgeous flowers. I love the funky shapes of their leaves, and they're also one of the rare spineless cacti. They're also a very drought tolerant species, I've had one for about 5 years, and despite multiple issues it's survived, and is doing great.

If you want some interesting texture I suggest cebu blue, easy to get perforation on its leaves. Similar to photos (you need water it in regular base thoo xd -and NOT overwater it-). Spider plant also interesting and pretty easy, syngonium as well (the regular green one, the colorful variation is hellish).
I know you struggle with house plants, so:
Almost every house plant is easy if you can provide an environment with relative okay parameters (doesn't need 80% humidity or wall sized window), just STABLE ones. Just like fish or literally any living creature, can adapt a relative wild range of parameters, if they dont swing too much.
Obv need a tons of other things, like a proper substrate, watering method, light etc. But if you can maintain such a cool tanks, you should be able to that with plants, just need a new perspective. I believe in you, Chris!!

About a year later and I have a beautiful white sand heavily planted tank with these rare guppies I dropped $60 on, 2 corydoras, 3 otos, 2 mystery snails, and 4 banded kuhli loaches. QOTW: Philodendron micans! It's a trailing plant that has velvety greeny-red-brown-purple leaves that look like stained glass when the sun shines through them! SUPER GORGEOUS and I've had no issues with maintenance.

QOTW. I grow a few plants in and around my tank. Pothos is a winner for sure. I also have philodendron, ivy, peace lily along with a monstera beside the tank. I also grow orchids in the same room for the extra humidity my tank provides. I have found that many plants can be grown hydroponically and Amazon sells baskets which fit in the tank for that very purpose. Try small, inexpensive plants and see how they do. Many types of dracaena thrive on neglect, basically. Most people kill them by overwatering. I had one (a Warneckii variety) that I bought at a 3" high plant, the second semester of my freshman year of college. It moved back and forth with me through undergrad and grad school (so, about 12 times), survived a 6 hr trip to my 2nd job, then the 6 hr trip back home when I left it. It rode in the front, with the passenger seat laid back, because it was 8 feet tall at that point. I built a support cage around it. It finally passed away at 22 years old and 9'7" tall. Through it's life I sometimes forgot to water it for weeks. The first few times I saw that it was pot-bound and replanted it, it almost died. After that I left it in a pot until it was almost all root. My (sick) cat used it as a litter box for months before we realized it. The plant added 6" to it's height and put off a shoot during that time. I eventually air layered it, so I still have several of its "children", but none of them have done as well as it did. Which is interesting, given that they're all genetically identical. Nurture over nature, I guess?

Get regular sansevieria (or black coral) and one single moonshine. Yes, the moonshine spreads too but the single pale plant in a forest of dark green is striking. Try a Hoya for a vining plant. They’re a little (a lot) slower than pothos but they’re pretty/weird. Or you could just get a monstera. They are vines but it might try to eat your fish room.
Changed my mind. Get a nepenthes. It’ll need a moss pole but it’s definitely a vining plant and worth buying distilled water for. Mine was about 6’ long and growing into my ceiling before I had to mow it back.

Very helpful and educational FTR because I've been thinking of moving to Japan for a few years and you know I've gotta get a fish tank while I'm there. Being in Ontario idk anything about earthquakes, so I'm super paranoid about going through an earthquake there. At least if Japan gets a freak blizzard/ice storm I'm ready.
QOTW: Managed to keep a snake plant alive for 4 years. Even made smaller plants. But then I overwatered it and the roots rotted. RIP Christopher the snake plant. :'( But yes, snake plants are awesome and really easy.

QOTW: Danish ivy is really bulletproof. I have a North facing window, and that thing is turning into a curtain. It's climbing on the curtain rod, it's attaching itself to my lamps, starting to think it's an alien. It's also bird safe. Easy recommendation for a super fast-growing and low-maintenance plant.

QotW: My monstera has been growing like crazy for the past 8months or so. Its just in a pot in front of a window. Its even sharing the pot with a snake plant and there's no special soil or anything. I do water it with tank water occasionally and I plan to repot it into a large pot with a moss pole for it to grow up.

Pothos. Basically impossible to kill. Survives neglect and minimal lighting. If you have 1 pothos, you have infinite pothos. Bonus: likes fish tanks.

You could get a string of dolphins or a string of turtles. It's a succulent, so as long as it's in well drained soil is pretty easy.
Or a goldfish plant. It likes well drained soil, bright light, and some humidity (you can keep it happy with a spray bottle or just near an open fish tank).
Or an aloe vera, again just well drained soil and it's a happy plant. Plus you can trim off leafs and keep them in the freezer.

    • @blooblaah9896
      @blooblaah9896 Месяц назад

Or a squirrel foot fern. It's a fern, so it's easy while being big and bushy. With these funny little fuzzy things.
Or could go grandma style with some African violets. They're fuzzy, so that's fun. They stay little, so can be great for some spaces.

if u want a tall houseplant, draecena is the way to go (not snake plants/sansevieria). not too expensive and you still get the height and low maintenance. i still go by the old names cuz it gets too confusing otherwise especially when explaining how to care for them. i'm an ex-orchid hobbyist lol

Love your videos!! If you want some house plant suggestions id say the easy ones would be pothos, philodendron, and peace lilies. My favorite are rhaphidophora tetrasperma and monstera adansonii especially with your good lighting. All of these plants are also great in fish tanks!

QotW: Aloe Vera. Not only cause i burn myself easy while cooking but also cause they look ok-ish. Second place would be Aloe Aristata, not so long as the Vera, looks more cute but doesn’t help with burns.
Oh, i think i should water them, forgot to do that like 4 weeks in a row now. They still look good tho.

The only tanks I worry about is my 30 gallon on my computer desk when it comes to earthquakes💀 My two 4 foot long tanks are all on stands that support my weight and the tank filled with water. Also I would suggest a peace lily if you want a big huge bushy plant coming out your tank. My cichlids live with one and they hide under the roots. My other go to is pathos as it just multiplies like crazy and you can add the clippings to other tanks.

I just got an asparagus fern (technically not a fern), I have it under direct sunlight on the patio, and it doesn't seem to be bothered by it. I also got a maidenhair fern (actually a fern) a few months ago. It's doing great. Only water the soil, or the leaves would go brown (had to learn it the hard way 😀). It does seem to grow in a 'droopy' way cus it's so lush, so I had to use a nylon rope to tie around the base of the stems to make them stand upright.
