Great video and excellent guesses Destin! Nice handling of the flying squirrel ;) They truly are fascinating animals to watch in motion: Attenborough: Is it a Bird? Is it a plane? Is it a flying squirrel? - BBC Earth
There's a tradition some computer science professors have of putting an unsolved problem on some exams to see what people come up with, partly because there's an old story about some professor who *accidentally* put an unsolved problem in computer science on an exam, and a student managed to solve it.
x12lesser21x SmarterEveryDay is a great channel. Just watch his series on helicopters. Mind blowing stuff. Also watch his series on winter olympic sports. Almost equally mind blowing for someone who is lucky to see snow one day a year.
I think this has taken the crown as perhaps my favourite (non-dissection) Brain Scoop episode. Learnt new things AND get to feel super smart for knowing the acacia-ant symbiosis already.
This literally combines two of my favorite RUclips channels. Please work with Destin again, I found this both informative and enjoyable to watch! Two cheers for collaborations with other channels! I would love to see you on his channel someday, Emily!
Just found this channel and has instantly become one of my favourites! I have never even been interested in biology, but your videos make all this so much more interesting!
this is a beautiful fusion .. an engineer looking at biology. invite Destin back for another episode. the suggestion by Come And Get It to have him theorize about some feature biologists are uncertain about is a cool twist.
I like this show idea a ton! Remind's me of Scishow's "Stump Hank" where he would have to identify what kind of animal a sample is from (which I also loved)
That's awesome how Destin was able to more or less figure out all of the functions of each one. I guess it shows how smart engineers can be from having that background in design.
that is so amazing that tree has adapted not a method of attack to stop itself from being eaten but a method to house insects that will attack for it !
Absolutely! Is there anyone who could explain how such a phenomenon occurs? Is it something as simple as natural selection and the tiny percentage of trees that just happened to secrete these nutrients proliferate? If so, use either as little or as much detail about it as you wish. I love learning the mechanism of how biological adaptation occurs.
Colin Prevatt _explain how such a phenomenon occurs_ Plants and animals, each being part of the environment of the other, co-evolve. _Is it something as simple as natural selection_ Yes.
Thank you for having SmarterEveryDay on. I love looking at nature from an engineering perspective. We can learn so much from what is already out there. Like creating airplanes that mimic the silent flight of owls or better kevlar like vests from learning about scales of fish that even piranhas cannot bite through.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I love the idea of the "Game Show" and I think that you should definitely do more videos like this. Also, it was so great to meet you at VidCon (TWICE! whaaaaat) and to go to your Q&A. Meeting you was definitely a major highlight in my VidCon 2014 journey, so thank you!
Awesome to see two very fun, smart youtubers in one show! I like seeing very smart people show that they also have to learn, instead of implying that intelligence is some kind of magical, static trait.
I remember a pharyngeal palate being one of the mystery items on Emily's tumblr when it was still the umzm blog!! It really freaked me out and opened my eyes to how freaky fish can be.
!!! You've been around here quite a while, friend. For anyone interested in playing along, we are running a "What the Function?!" game on our Facebook - every Thursday at 12pm CST we will post a photo of a specimen or artifact and you have to guess its function! First person to guess correctly gets a postcard from yours truly!
I'm always excited when I see Anna Goldman on the screen. Go Anna!! XD By the way, this episode was amazing! I honestly didn't expect a collaboration with Destin but this is absolutely awesome (well, all Brain Scoop and Smarter Every Day vids are anyway). XD
This video was recommended to me by RUclips because I'm subscribed to SmarterEveryDay and this was a really interesting and fun video! Then I found out its connected to the Field Museum of Chicago and my mind was blown, I live in the Chicago area and have visited the Field Museum many times! I'm definitely subscribing to this channel and will watch more. :)
I really want to see more of these, either with Destin again or with other youtube ed people. especially Dr. Lindsay Doe, I'd love to see what you can pull out of the collection for her expertise.
I would really love some more biology and engineering combined videos. This was spectacular! Give me some more "What the Function?" quizzes! rootin for you :)
This is so cool, really, an awesome format and I'm soooo looking forward for more! I knew about the grinding plates some fish have, but the other were completely new to me - and how awesome is the story with the tree and the ants! Blew my mind! #hurraybiology
I love this video idea! It's really interesting and I also started figuring out what these things were for. Please make more of these videos. I really learned a lot of very interessting facts :) this video made me curious about all the other tricks animals and plants have :)
This is so cool! I love this different view of natural history, and the fact that he was able to suss even part of the use for each thing out shows that sciences and mechanics in a multitude of areas have so many similarities that even someone with a background in Engineering can figure it out. So very awesome; keep these coming!
Great video and excellent guesses Destin! Nice handling of the flying squirrel ;) They truly are fascinating animals to watch in motion: Attenborough: Is it a Bird? Is it a plane? Is it a flying squirrel? - BBC Earth
Hey BBC yk what else BBC stands for?😏
I love how earnestly and genuinely Destin laughs at "derbianus". He's like a giant super smart adorable kid.
derbianus.. she said anus.... hhehehehehehhehehehehe
She knew it was funny too, omg I can't stop laughing now.
Makes me think... "thar be anus" which is even funnier
So cool to see Destin on this channel! Great video you two! But I would've liked to see Vanna White. Seriously. How can we make that happen?
She is adorable! Very intelligent and it's clear she loves her job and loves teaching!
Destin is also pretty cool in my book.
What the Function should be a regular bit... definitely fun.
You should bring him something that has an unknown use and see what he comes up with. Might solve a mystery, Or rewrite history, Destin, Woohoo.
Hah! That'd be hilarious. "Guess what? We just tricked you into making a major scientific discovery! LOLOLOLOL"
There's a tradition some computer science professors have of putting an unsolved problem on some exams to see what people come up with, partly because there's an old story about some professor who *accidentally* put an unsolved problem in computer science on an exam, and a student managed to solve it.
Upon checking, there's a similar-but-different story that checks out on Snopes: www.snopes.com/college/homework/unsolvable.asp
And the new discovery might be used to improve race cars, lasers, aeroplanes
Neil G. Dickson Like in Good Will Hunting.
I haven't watched a Brain Scoop in ages, I've missed you Emily!
Welcome back! We've missed you, too.
Me either. I wonder why I stopped. Really like the video
Soylant Me too, I wonder why we all came back at this video. I don't watch Smartereveryday alot either
x12lesser21x SmarterEveryDay is a great channel. Just watch his series on helicopters. Mind blowing stuff. Also watch his series on winter olympic sports. Almost equally mind blowing for someone who is lucky to see snow one day a year.
I like the new show idea. One little request, at the end maybe save one for the viewers to try and guess. Then answer it on the next episode.
What a great idea! I second this request. *****
I think this has taken the crown as perhaps my favourite (non-dissection) Brain Scoop episode. Learnt new things AND get to feel super smart for knowing the acacia-ant symbiosis already.
Destin and Emily now that's symbiotic in itself, the Smarter Scoop!
Smarter Every Scoop I meant to say.
John Bare Is that ice cream that makes you smarter‽ I WANT SOME!
ttsgeb The brain every day ;-)
NickGreyden You know what they say: A scoop of brain a day keeps the doctor away.
...wait.
Good one!
This literally combines two of my favorite RUclips channels. Please work with Destin again, I found this both informative and enjoyable to watch! Two cheers for collaborations with other channels!
I would love to see you on his channel someday, Emily!
The immense infusion of exuberance and shade added by anna and her distaste for 'gliding' squirrels really takes this video to the next level.
Just found this channel and has instantly become one of my favourites!
I have never even been interested in biology, but your videos make all this so much more interesting!
Love the new concept and the fact the first installment had Destin. Please do this extremely often!
I love this symbiotic relationship Destin and Emily providing subscribers to one another.
Loving this new segment already! The sound effect around 2:08 really crowned that demonstration.
Those throat teeth make me extremely uncomfortable.
Do you maybe have Trypophobia?
Yep that word. That feeling. Goosebumps...
Angry Beard Man yea, I have trypophobia and they made me uncomfortable to look at as well
I thought I was the only one! It made me feel really nauseous...
What a fantastic birthday present, two of my favorite RUclips science shows together! Awesome guys!
Anna Goldman is just the best.
My two favorite educational RUclipsrs in one video! Fingers crossed for more Destin/Emily collaborations.
This was awesome! Please do more of these with Destin! I was so excited to see this collaboration :)
If there were an All-star game of RUclips science, these 3 would be on the winning team.
Please play this again. It was really fun to follow along and guess myself. Great episode!!
Cant believe this content came out 9 years ago. This is some good shit right here, I would watch a million of these.
Great video! The interaction between everyone was so smooth, I couldn' t even tell who the host was. I hope there's a lot more of these.
Two of my favorite youtube science content creators working together? Yes, thank you. May I have another please?
Great to see two of my favorite youtubers get together (and obviously get along well!)
I'm really enjoying this new format. All these smart people in one place.... Brilliant.
This was a really fun episode! You guys should do more episodes like this, it's educational and fun :3
I love this "What the function?" thing! Do more please.
And also, if you do more, I think this has great T-shirt design potential.
this is a beautiful fusion .. an engineer looking at biology. invite Destin back for another episode. the suggestion by Come And Get It to have him theorize about some feature biologists are uncertain about is a cool twist.
Wow, so great to see you here Destin, two favourites together, please continue this format, a very interesting and informative clip.
I really enjoyed the episode on What the Function. I hope you will do others. Both informative and entertaining. Thank you.

Yes.
As an engineer, it's really interesting to see Destin logic his way through What the function.
Thank you for having SmarterEveryDay on. I love looking at nature from an engineering perspective. We can learn so much from what is already out there. Like creating airplanes that mimic the silent flight of owls or better kevlar like vests from learning about scales of fish that even piranhas cannot bite through.
She seemed very impressed that he was able to figure all of those out, especially at the end. Way to go, man.
This is what the Scishow talkshow has been missing. Looking very forward to more "what the function."
I LOVED this "What the Function!" Please make more! Thank you!
Loved this video! I definitely feel smarter today. Please do more of these game shows with special guests!
Awesome to see two very fun, smart youtubers in one show! I like seeing very smart people show that they also have to learn, instead of implying that intelligence is some kind of magical, static trait.
Emily never looked so wonderful, as well as brining her fascinating knowledge about animals in the forefront.
My two favorite youtube science hosts together! Best video ever!
I was watching "Smarter Every Day" videos and found myself watching this. Emily Graslie is SO ADORABLE!! I LOVE this girl !! Count me subscribed!!
Such a great engaging episode! And love seeing the cross collaboration! Hopefully we get to see more guests on the show trying to figure out WTF is!
What a treat! Two of my favorites together. I didn't know you knew one another. Should'a guess though. I probably pass Destin on Rideout every day.
That stuff is just plain amazing. I really look forward to more What The Function!
I remember a pharyngeal palate being one of the mystery items on Emily's tumblr when it was still the umzm blog!! It really freaked me out and opened my eyes to how freaky fish can be.

Watching Destin learn is the funnest thing on the planet
I'm always excited when I see Anna Goldman on the screen. Go Anna!! XD
By the way, this episode was amazing! I honestly didn't expect a collaboration with Destin but this is absolutely awesome (well, all Brain Scoop and Smarter Every Day vids are anyway). XD
This was a lot of fun to watch. This style of video felt more interactive, even though you couldn't hear me guessing right along with Destin I was.
Two of my favorite RUclipsr in one vid! So excited!
If someone could figure out a way to bottle Emily's charisma, they would be a trillionaire. Love this series.
I really want to see more of these, either with Destin again or with other youtube ed people. especially Dr. Lindsay Doe, I'd love to see what you can pull out of the collection for her expertise.
Oh I really hope you do this section of the show more often! Please have more guests make educated guesses and teach us by learning from errors. :3
Awesome detail in the description of those items. Lots to learn, thanks.
Two of my favorite people :D
Go science!
Yay for RUclips science collaborations! I hope we get to see you on Destin's channel, soon, Emily!
I would really love some more biology and engineering combined videos. This was spectacular! Give me some more "What the Function?" quizzes! rootin for you :)
I love this more than you can imagine, I love him at smarter every day and I just started watching the brain scoop!
Thats some great set up / (Lerning show concept ) you got there. I learned something new today, Thank you !
Really like this format! Can we have more of these together with the regular episodes?
These are the videos I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to spent my time on.
So great seeing you two.
Share more of these Thanks a bunch
"...and the ants come streaming out and sting the..." [makes aggressive eye contact with audience] "...CRAP...!"
I heart this show so much.
This is so cool, really, an awesome format and I'm soooo looking forward for more! I knew about the grinding plates some fish have, but the other were completely new to me - and how awesome is the story with the tree and the ants! Blew my mind! #hurraybiology

Clauses.
I love this segment, can What The Function be a recurring thing? It should be a thing.
One of the best channel collabs I've seen!
1:29 that old-timey filmstrip clip is so you! I like this video.
I could watch these two be excited about learning about the natural world all day long.
Holy cow, seeing you two (my favourite youtuber's) in the same picture in my sub feed is awesome!
Oh my goodness, I loved this video. I would definitely love to see more what the function.
This was such a cool idea and Anna and Destin were great! P.S. Thoroughly enjoyed your words at the Brain Scoop Q&A and the Women on RUclips panel.
Two of my favorite RUclips nerds!
I love this video idea! It's really interesting and I also started figuring out what these things were for. Please make more of these videos. I really learned a lot of very interessting facts :) this video made me curious about all the other tricks animals and plants have :)
Anna Goldman should be a regular, she's hilarious, just the facial expressions and everything xD
I really enjoyed this new segment and would totally watch more in the future.
I love every single thing about this video. Keep doing these.
Destin is a genius!!!!!! I knew he was freaking smart, but I didn't know he was an analytical genius!
FAVORITE. EPISODE. EVER. I think Destin is super cool, and Emily is really awesome and put together they make the best thing ever.
This new episode is great! Please continue this "What the function"!
Well... I know this is a 5 year old video, but can you make more WTFunction content? It's super fun to watch, and try and figure it out. :)
Two of my favorite channels together. Awesome.
Awesome... More please...you and destin should make this a spin off show....with Anna of course!
Awesome episode, loved having Destin on there.
Nothin to see here, just two of my favorite RUclipsrs having a blast and teaching me stuff.
This is so cool! I love this different view of natural history, and the fact that he was able to suss even part of the use for each thing out shows that sciences and mechanics in a multitude of areas have so many similarities that even someone with a background in Engineering can figure it out. WHY HAVE I NOT SUBSCRIBED TO THIS CHANNEL UNTIL NOW?!
I could literally watch hours of this...
