Shanghai Jazz was opened in summer of 1995 by David Niu and Martha Chang. While studying in a doctorate program, Martha did extensive research on 1920’s Shanghai. During that tumultuous period globally, Shanghai was a destination for those looking to escape the depression in America, the rise of fascism in Eastern Europe, the penal colonies in Australia, among many other difficult situations around the world at that time. With myriad different cultures flooding into the city, the cuisines evolved, a dark and violent vein sprouted, and an incredible music scene developed and jazz was the genre that kept folks swinging in the clubs!
With this as inspiration, Shanghai Jazz was born. David and Martha drove this unique concept for 22 years and counting, as one of the “Top 100 Jazz Clubs in the World” (Downbeat Magazine).
In the summer of 2017, Shanghai Jazz was passed on to Thomas Donohoe with a 29 year career in hospitality, 18 of those years he was a chef, leading award winning kitchens from New Jersey to Montana, Florida, and New York City. He trained with some of the best chefs in the world including Thomas Keller, at the French Laundry in Yountville, CA, Jonathan Waxman at Barbuto in NYC, and Bill Pete at Café des Artistes, also in NYC. Throughout his career, Tom has been focused on and committed to providing exquisite dining experiences to all his guests.
Now, Tom and Shanghai Jazz’s team of culinary and hospitality professionals carry on the tradition, driven by a collective passion to bring good people together with world-class live music, great food, and gracious hospitality to create an exceptionally fun dining experience.

I don't understand how this video can get dislikes. It's not only some of the best jazz you can find, it's some of the best music. Well played Vivino!
They are the morons who listen to rock.
I only see the likes 1.7 k is pretty good.
What a beautiful rendition of a timeless piece - thumbs up! :)
Thankfully we still have people who do music like you guys thank you so much
💯
One of thee most celebrated iconic jazz pieces in music history! So intoxicating, hypnotic, exquisite, sensual, moving and vocal....without a single lyric to be sung or heard!🎵🎹🎶🎼🎺🎤🎷
old school classic..done so very very well
24 people don’t recognize great music?!?fantastic band!
A very, very tasty rendition indeed, Gentlemen.
BEST RENDITION OF MY FAVORITE FILM NOIR TASTE! 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Written as a tribute to Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges, this well crafted tune has endured like few others from 1940... like all great art it begs and forgives countless interpretations without losing its nocturnal message.
Had the great pleasure & honour to meet Paul Gonsalves in the bar after the show. He did caricatures on the spot, signed them & gave them out. For me Paul had liquid gold coming out of his sax.
Wonderful
Just beautiful!
Sax sound is great and having a reality, without no sound effect by amplifier.

Sehr schön und gute lied! Pure and sweet sounds, joy for the ears!
¡Felicitaciones! Una hermosa y muy bien lograda versión del tema. Me recuerda al Mike Hammer de Spillane. 👍🏻🥃🎼🎶🍾

Magnífica interpretación de un clásico del jazz. Nada como la música en vivo de los grandes músicos
.
Pero que musicazos tan buenos. Enhorabuena. He aprendido oyendo.
Gracias por una interpretación tan exquisita.
RUclips has a series of video interviews with Earle Hagen. He talks about writing this tune and the theme songs for several TV series that we can all recognize.

Muy bueno! Dónde se encuentra ese lugar?

Shanghai Jazz (R) Restaurant & Jazz Club Thank you for your kind answer, if I travel to U.S. I would like to visit your place. Greetings from Uruguay!
Ok.
Great. Wish the bass had been pumped up more.
ken thomas Thanks for the feedback! It's Gene the audio/video producer. I agree, the mix was definitely slanted toward the sax on these videos. I will keep your comment in mind for future recordings to help make the bass pop out of the mix a bit further. Sometimes on stock computer speakers most of the lower frequencies are minimized or unheard altogether. In the next two weeks, we are lining up to have a batch of new videos posted from three more recorded evenings in the last couple of months, artists such as Rob Paparozzi, John Korba, Bernard Purdie, and Cyrus Chestnut. We are also setting up to record Cyrille Aimée on May 29th. Stay tuned!
Great line up. Thanks for update.
***** Just saw this note. I have a subwoofer with my PC speakers and the bass booms. Love this song and this version!
David Aragona Glad you enjoy the video. As heads-up, we've completed filming 3 concerts now in post production: 1) Vocalist, Brynn Stanley; 2) Drummer, Dion Parson; 3) Vibraphonist, Christos Rafalides ... stay tuned!
2:45 What was that???? Otherwise great!!
Thanks for sharing our love of music at Shanghai Jazz. It means the world to us!
At 2:45, it was obvious what it was, though pretty different from the way it's usually heard. I liked it.
😏👌
I am thinking of Mike Hammer…..
Not even close
yea he is smooth,, at first but its too jazzed up after 1 minute, yea i know its a strategic build up but i , personally am not a fan of jazz ,,,the slow dragged version is better for me
This version does not even come close to the Viscounts version. He ruined a great song.
