    Doing a dissertation at university on a zeroshift gearbox, and this video was a great help and getting me to understand standard dog clutches! Cheers pal

      Glad your doing a dissertation at University for a gearbox mated to an internal combustion engine - something that's over 100 years old technologically speaking.
      Glad to know you're happy to boast this lol..

      I'll be putting my new th 400 with straight cut gear set in my Sonoma in the next couple days, I went with the no lateral forces excuse the whine is just a bonus, I figure with the tranny whine, solid roller and 9" locker it's going to be like a symphony driving down the road.🙃

    I would like the idea of straight cut gear with syncros for my honda. That way it can still be driven normally while being able to handle increased power. But my budget just ins't looking too good for that.

    Why does a dogbox slam into gear as opposed to a manual slides into gear? Is it the syncro rings in the normal manual that prevents the instant slam into the next gear?

    • @MRTPerformanceAustralia
      @MRTPerformanceAustralia  9 лет назад +7

      +Jesse Jesse there is no synchro in between

      I just wanted to ask the same question. on synchro manual transmissions there is synchro ring between shifter ring and gears.. on dog transmission there is nothing between. so how do not shifter ring and gears grind each other when shifting?

      :(

    • @NZSmall
      @NZSmall 8 лет назад +2

      +T0mB1ll I'm not too familiar with transmissions but I think it has to do with the fact that the gear teeth are always in mesh unlike a synchro mesh gearbox. So there's a larger gap for the dog teeth to mesh into compared to getting gear teeth to mesh together. that's my assumption anyway

      Dogs, and or doghouse are worn or rounded over. Dogs are usually slightly undercut matching the doghouse, which physically hold the gear engaged under load. If it's popping out that means you have rounded the undercut dog ear off.

    I know this is an old video, but I have a 93 accord sedan, and I'm looking for a dog, straight cut transmission, don't care about whining, just strength, and reliability at 250-300hp. any help, links, anything like that would be madly appreciated.
    Street car only, car is probably never gonna even think about seeing a track, plan on putting nos, maybe boosting it, don't want short gears, id prefer a 6 speed over anything, and id like to be able to reach near 180-200mph, or close to that, but also get off the line very quickly, 0-60 being around 5.5-6.5 seconds, and 0-100 being around 10-12 seconds.
    again, any help at all would be appreciated.

    Would the straight cut gears aid in better power transmission, i.e less overall drivetrain loss?

    • @MRTPerformanceAustralia
      @MRTPerformanceAustralia  9 лет назад

      Car Nut in theory yes

    • @hammurambi
      @hammurambi 8 лет назад

      +Car Nut Straight-cut gears are actually worse for power transmission than helical gears. Helical gears are also stronger than straight cut gears due to their higher load-bearing surface area. The only reason straight-cut gears are used in racing transmissions is they don't produce axial loads along the main shaft or counter shaft which can cause a failure in one of the shafts, or more likely, it can cause the transmission case to fail.

      If it is cable shifted try oiling up the cable sleeve and making sure the levers are pulling freely.
      If it is directly shifted take the gearstick out and check for buildup around the base of the stick

    sooo..why the hell dogbox is SO expensive?! Why?

    • @tanker9987
      @tanker9987 7 лет назад +5

      Because it's a specialty item.
      The market for dog boxes is small so there aren't a lot of companies making them.
      Prices for manufactured items require volume to drop prices, especially if they are labor intensive to produce.

    • @berengerchristy6256
      @berengerchristy6256 6 лет назад

      also if they are labor intensive and there is a large enough market capital will be acquired to reduce or eliminate labor and replace it with automation
